“Not much to write home about”

The food was nice, but the service was poor, and more like a school canteen. It is such a shame as they are in a prime location they need to up date it.

“breakfast by the sea”
4 of 5 bubbles Reviewed 11 November 2013

Good cafe breakfast served by friendly staff with stunning views of the dorset coast. Limited seating if wet and you have to pay to park. Worth a visit

“Disappointing, I'm afraid.”
2 of 5 bubbles Reviewed 8 November 2013

We just happened along, really, quite unplanned. Travelling westwards, along the coast, and feeling quite hungry and ready for lunch. Having never stopped at Charmouth before, our curiosity led us down to the beach and a very convenient car-park, We slid into a vacant space in prime postion, right by the beach and looking out to sea, to sit in the sun and watch the late-summer tourists who, like ourselves, were intent on enjoying the elements. So far, so good...

The Beach Cafe, right by the car-park and beach (of course!!), beckoned and we spotted a space outside in the sun, on a wooden picnic table. My wife went in to order and I settled at the table....but not for long. Before my wife returned outside I had spotted that a few basic management issues weren't being addressed. The clearing of tables (or lack of) stood out particularly; the removal of previous customers' dishes with, inevitably, bits and pieces of food both on and off plates and tables, was attracting the attention of unwanted airborne visitors and causing more than a little irritation.

Given the proximity to the beach especially, where seaweed and insects and smells abound, it seemed to us even more important that tables should be cleared swiftly and regularly, and that wasn't happening. Probably should have complained at the time, rather than carping on now about it, some time later. We just wanted to eat and get on our way....so we moved to a table inside that was better, apart from its proximity to the queue at the counter. The food was edible and, to be fair, it wouldn't be claiming to be 'haute cuisine' - but the sausage I ate wasn't the greatest ever made.

The staff generally seemed earnest and pleasant enough, going about their tasks, but it lacked real customer focus and care, sadly. It felt a bit more like we were there to provide a seasonal income, rather than they providing us with a service...a pleasant, tasty and very welcome lunch, for example. Given the number of customers, space available, breadth and calibre of menu, lack of alternative, nice sunny day...there certainly appeared to be sufficient staff but, unfortunately, it lacked a 'critical' eye from within.

Perhaps we were just unfortunate, and caught it on a 'difficult' day. Maybe, all were a little jaded after a busy summer. But our impressions were based on a perceived absence of a few basic measures and we left disappointed. Sorry, Beach Cafe...just my honest opinion and, one day, I do hope to return...to sit in the sun, enjoy a simple 'good-value' meal, and not be sharing it with unwelcome itinerants from the beach!
