“Outstanding heated pool”
Reviewed 15 September 2013

One of the best hotel swimming pools we have come across - really good size and heated to a sensible temperature so that keen swimmers can stay in for some time without feeling roasted. Excellent cuisine. And a ceiling fan - you don't come across those very often in this country but so much pleasanter than a portable fan. (Will Dyson invent a bladeless ceiling fan one day?!) The only real downside was the lack of a lift - there are several flights of stairs (we were in room 7 on the first floor but there are also second floor rooms) which might well test those with poor mobility. Not enough to deduct a star but a potential issue nevertheless. We would certainly return if in the area again.

Room Tip: When booking, ask about stairs.

We recently had a two night stay with friends and were not disappointed in our expectations. The welcome was warm and efficient and our bags were even taken up to our room on the top floor. Our room was large, clean and well appointed and the bed large and extremely comfortable. The bathroom was small but spotlessly clean with a large shower cubicle and had some of the largest bath towels we had ever seen in a hotel. Our room was warm and well soundproofed which cannot be said of rooms in other more expensive establishments in which we have stayed. We ate in the restaurant as part of the DBB deal and were impressed by the quality of the food and the provenance of the ingredients which are mainly locally sourced. The menu card was well balanced and we enjoyed two excellent dinners with a good choice for each of the three courses. The wine list was limited but well chosen and offered good value. The cooked breakfasts were excellent and service at all meals was generally good although some small lapses in attention to detail accounts for the four star rating rather than five stars. This small quibble aside, we would recommend this hotel most highly as an excellent place to stay for a relaxing break in this lovely area of England.

Good stay on 26 August (bank holiday Monday) under the sun. Perfect day for using the swimming pool, even with many kids around from the cottages at the back.

Good hotel nicely decorated, located outside of town on a hill, comfy rooms (we had a standard) although a bit hot (no air-con but a fan). A bit noisy due to road traffic down the valley but OK with earplugs even for a light sleeper. Ample parking space for the 10 rooms capacity.

Welcoming personnel and nice restaurant with good food. Try the local white wine "Manstree".

We visited nearby Lyme Regis and were a bit disappointed after having been to Lulwortk Cove but that's just our personal tastes being more into nature than tourist spots.

Visited for Sunday lunch. Parking a bit limited but we were made welcome and shown to a well laid out table in a nice dining room. We chose main course only - roast beef and pork - at £10.50 each. Extra courses were available at reasonable prices. Food arrived promptly and was hot and good quality. The waitress asked if we would like extra gravy and was generally attentive and helpful . We likes the hotel ambience and will definitely be returning.

We've just got home today after a 5 night stay at Fernhill and I couldn't recommend it highly enough. The hotel is small and family run which helps to create a really welcoming, relaxed and friendly environment. We stayed in room 5 which has a lovely view of the pool and a super comfy huuuuge bed (great for my 7 month pregnant belly to fit!!). The quality of the extras in the hotel make it a bit more special, a fruit bowl in your room that gets topped up, home made biscuits to go on your in room tea tray, white company toiletries...

We enjoyed a couple of meals from the bar menu, both of which were superb. Breakfast in the hotel was also great with hot breakfasts cooked to order and a lovely selection of healthy cereals, fruit yogurts etc to help yourself to.

We were lucky enough to have beautiful weather everyday and so were able to enjoy to outdoor pool which is heated - a really nice surprise in a hotel in England!! The pool area is a real sun trap!

Whilst on our stay we had a successful fossil hunt at Charmouth beach which was great - a much nicer beach in my opinion than Lyme Regis or Seatown, but Seatown is worth a visit just for lunch at the Anchor! The River Cottage canteen is close by and definitely worth a visit (but book ahead)... Amazing food and really reasonable prices.

We would definitely stay at Fernhill again - thanks Jo & Rob for a lovely break!

My partner and I wanted to visit Lyme Regis and found this hotel by chance online in nearby Charmouth. We were delighted with everything from the service, attention to details, the food in the restaurant (we had two out of three evening meals here) and the incredibly comfortable bed in the SuperKing Spa room.

Would have liked some instructions on how to use the spa bath in the room but we would return here without any doubt.

The owners Jo and Robert live on site and are obviously born for this type of work.

I even managed a swim in the outdoor pool (in August 2013). A real treat in England any time of year!

Thanks so much!

Christopher and Jennifer

A lovely welcoming hotel, we stayed for two nights. We had excellent cooked breakfasts served in a dining room, which is more than can be said for some other local hotels! Nothing was too much trouble even to the extent of providing us with the name of their wi-fi range extender! Our room was clean and very comfortable so we will be back.
