Oh dear, oh dear. We were booked in as a large group (about 40 of us) and it was all prearranged - the time we would arrive, what we would eat (the same for everyone, with a veggie option for a couple of us). Time was tight - we only had just over an hour.
First impressions - good. Stone-flagged floors, cream painted woodwork. They had set up tables for us, so we sat down and waited.
When the food (cottage pie) arrived, it was perfectly OK - just ridiculously small portions. I mean, seriously. People were laughing and saying to the waitresses "Is that it?". It took over half an hour for them to get all the portions out to us, and then they brought (equally mean) bowls of vegetables - by which time, of course, most people had eaten their food. The more organised ones had already gone and ordered portions of chips because they simply hadn't had enough food. When you've paid £8.50 for a very simple main course and some veg, you shouldn't need to top up with chips!
So we spoke to the manager, who was pretty aggressive from the start. His reasons?
Apparently he'd only taken this group as a favour (silly us, thinking it was a commercial transaction and that we'd paid the going rate).
It was a very busy day (what a coincidence, just like for the other negative reviews on here!).
And if we thought the portions were small we should have asked for more at the time, because there was plenty ( we had said the portions were small to the waitresses, and two of us did ask for more, and were charged the same again for those portions).
So all in all, pretty unimpressed. I know large groups take some planning to deal with, but we had agreed to a single menu choice and a fixed start time, which makes it as easy as possible. If you are running a commercial operation and accept a booking like this, I'd expect you to be able to deal with it, and not to make every single one of the group feel ripped off.
