“A rather bizarre experience”
Reviewed 17 October 2013

Idyllically situated Victorian house in quiet extensive gardens. Opulent fixtures and fittings in lounge, dining room and some bedrooms; although 1 bedroom still had 70s tiles in the bathroom.
Our tvs also seemed as old and most of the time didn't work properly.
On the plus side, the food was reasonable but the constant hovering while eating was OTT.
On the minus side, there were no tea making facilities available in the rooms and we thought it was very mean to charge for such.
We weren't allowed to meet the chef to compliment him on his dishes which was very odd.
There was a group of guests staying at the same time who seemed regular visitors. We almost felt we were intruding on a private party as they seemed to be treated differently. We did notice them helping themselves to apples in the hotel's orchard.
Must mention one very thoughtful touch ; the hostess did make us an anniversary card and we thank her for that.

Room Tip: Stay in the main part of the hotel not the annexe.

It was my mother-in-law's 94th birthday on Sunday and she kindly hosted 10 for lunch at Stock Hill. We were given a lovely private dining room looking out onto the gardens and we all happy with our choices of food. The service was first class and the chef catered for one vegetarian & a celiac (with advance notice). Two courses is plenty enough and the puddings were just FAB! Our guests from our self catering cottage recommended it to us back in June and we had been waiting for that "special" occasion as an excuse to try it out! We will definitely be recommending it to others.

Enjoyed a five night stay in this formal yet relaxed country house. Meticulous housekeeping, outstanding hospitality and superb food and wine are the most noteworthy features. Rooms are spacious, quiet and most relaxing. What could be improved? Better quality toiletries in the bathrooms and perhaps upgrading to flat screen television. That said, much far exceeds the price paid, not least the care and passion with which the owners devote themselves to the business. Deserves to be better known and more popular.

Just returned from my mother-in-law's 88th birthday lunch. Unfortunately, the birthday girl didn't want a starter, so I didn't get to try the herring dish that I had my eye on. I chose rump steak for my main course and had chocolate mousse for dessert, both very fine. Everyone was full of praise for their food. My only minor gripe was that my vegetables tasted salty. Father-in-law was in the chair, so I did not get to see the wine list, and the menus discreetly had no price information at all. I can't comment on the wine list nor the value for money. We drank a full-bodied Crozes-Hermitage which would have been much better in five year's time. But I would definitely recommend this place for the quality of the food, the excellent service and the overall lunch experience. Perhaps make a weekend of it for my next wedding anniversary . . .

A first visit for a Saturday lunch - stunning herring starter- totally to recommend- and all dishes were good and well presented. Disappointed not to see even more Austrian cuisine on the menu, as they were so good and unusual. A really well chosen wine list, with super pudding wines and a good selection of malts.
The house is charming and the garden has wonderful trees, but probably needs a little TLC to bring it up to the standard of the house. Service very good and atmosphere warm and welcoming.

Re: LOVELY PLACE TO STAY -SHAME ABOUT ----We are at a loss to understand what you mean about "screaming kids". We do not take small children, we stand in peaceful 10 acres of parkland.
However, the noise they have objected to was the calling for food by the young Jackdaws which are nesting in the 200 year copper beach, unfortunatly that is something we cannot do anything about.
SADLY our guests did not bring this to our attention--we would have offered another room in the front of the hotel.
Naturally we are sorry to learn that they will not return to Stock Hill where we value and respect every customer and have done so for the past 28 years.
We hope this has cleared up the subject of "screaming kids"
yours sincerely Peter Hauser

My wife and I stayed here for two nights in late May and everything was perfect. Our room (number 4) was very spacious, the bed was super comfortable and the huge bathroom had double sinks, a tub, and a great shower. The owner, Nita, met us at the front steps with a firm handshake and even her husband Peter came out from the kitchen to assist carrying our bags upstairs. The food was delicious and the service was top notch from breakfast to dinner. The house is beautiful and Nita and Peter Hauser have done a great job in choosing the color schemes for the rooms and maintaining the house to its high level.
We would highly recommend the Stock Hill to anyone who appreciates a fine country house with great service and excellent food in a bucolic setting.
