“Disappointing !”
Reviewed 29 July 2014 via mobile

My daughter and I booked a three night break at this hotel.
We were expecting a comfortable three star hotel complete with pool and spa.
The exterior is very grim and on arrival we were told the pool was not in use and we discovered there were no spa facilities just three tired gym machines!
The room was very clean and the beds comfortable, however, the decor throughout the hotel dated.
We ate breakfast as it was included in our room package; the fruit selection was good but the hot buffet was unappetising having been prepared well in advance of the guests and left standing under heat lamps. We did not feel confident enough to try dinner.
I can only assume the hotel got it's stars for the view, as the hotel had little else to offer, although it does have potential.

Thank you for your comments. We would like to respond to some of your concerns.

Although our hotel was built in the 60s, we have kept all our facilities up to date. It is difficult to alter the building though, due to the extreme weather we experience, and because the main building was obviously designed to allow guests to digest what we consider to be arguably one of the best views in Britain.

We are delighted that you found the hotel to be clean and comfortable. We pride ourselves on excellent sleeping arrangements, as well as cleanliness. We will pass your comments to the housekeeping team, as they will be delighted.

It is true that our pool is indeed closed, as we make way for some exciting improvements coming soon.

We were concerned to read that you were expecting facilities that we do not offer. Our marketing team have removed all known on-line references to facilities that we currently do not offer. However, as always, we do appreciate being informed if anything is being advertised that we are not aware of.

Thanks again for your comments. We look forward to welcoming you again soon.

I booked this hotel as a last minute break even though I was slightly wary having read previous mixed trip advisor comments!

On arriving at The Heights my partner's first comment was that it was the most ugliest exterior of a hotel that he had ever seen, resembling something like a 1970's cement block! ... Oh dear I thought this doesn't bode well... but on entering from a hot day into the cool, airy reception area, things started to improve. The chap on reception was helpful and asked if we needed help with our luggage and directed us to our room. We had booked a deluxe room, but unfortunatley there was not much deluxe about it. Decor was dated and dark, had no view, but the bed was large and comfortable. This room was not what you'd expect for paying the extra for a "deluxe". The bathroom was adequate and more up-todate than the bedroom.

The restaurant decor was again dated, but had lovely views. We ordered seabass for our evening meal which was delicious and the wine was good, but we found the prices were high. Breakfast was good with the usual choice of cereals, fruits etc.

Now the pool..... not in use, again in a square cement slabbed area. Why this hotel has not utilised this area by opening the pool, adding sun loungers etc. as the summer season and great weather is well under way I don't understand, it would definately lift the whole slightly run down feel of the hotel.

So to recap...

Ugly cement block exterior.
Dated but clean interior.
Lovely views.
Good food.
Overall - needs some TLC.

Would we stay again?...No... as this is a basic 3 star hotel with a 4 star tariff!

We pride ourselves on providing a great service to all guests, and we are pleased that during your stay, this was no exception. Our Reception team are available, to assist with anything you require, and nothing is too much trouble - as was proven here. Thanks for your comments on this.

We are delighted that you enjoyed your meal. Locally sourced food always tastes better we feel, and clearly this is something that our guests have come to enjoy.

The swimming pool has now (as you noticed), closed, to prepare for some brand new outdoor improvements, which will enhance the enjoyment and relaxation of all our guests. We are really excited about this and look forward to being able to present a new outdoor relaxation area soon.

We look forward to welcoming you again.

Popped in as day visitor. It does have fantastic view of Chesil Beach and Weymouth Bay from lovely lounge. It would appear tey have done some updating since a visit a couple of years back particularly in the reception area.

We decided to stay for lunch, the other half had ham egg and chips which was hot well cooked and fresh with their own tomato relish/sauce which was excellent change to something out a plastic bottle. I had the pork pulled burger which came on a brioche bun so much better that heavy bread. Coleslaw was nice and creamy and chips plentiful and fresh. Coffees were good and service excellent, cant fault it. To be fair been a few times over the years and while previously it was very good or good this time will give it excellent!

Visited The Heights for an evening meal last week. Lovely meal and very friendly staff. The meal was very good value for money when compared to some of the "chain" style restaurants. Local food well-prepared with prompt service. Lovely views over Portland.

I stayed two nights in the Heights. It is ideally placed for exploring the Isle of Portland, within walking distance of everywhere else on the island, and the views from the restaurant are superb (at least they are when it's not thick fog outside, as it was one evening. The Bistro menu is interesting - I can't recommend the twice-cooked lamb, but the spicy chicken and rice is excellent, provided you do like spicy food of course. Breakfast was good too, and the staff were mostly very friendly and helpful, apart from one who was a bit offhand when I hadn't booked a table for dinner (no-one had told me that I needed to book). If I go there again, I would ask for a room upstairs, as the one I had was on the ground floor with no view, and I could not leave the window open at night.

Room Tip: Ask for a room with a view!

We were greeted upon arrival by a very friendly Receptionist, who ensured we had table booked for dinner and even asked if we would need internet. Room very well appointed and bed very comfy and huge! Bistro dinner excellent and views superb even on an overcast evening. Breakfast was buffet with a wide choice to suit all tastes. The hotel was quiet and all staff friendly - an enjoyable overnight stay.

My husband booked this hotel as a surprise for me he paid £250.00 for two nights B & B

After a long walk down a very depressing dark corridor we arrived at our room that over looked the carpark. He booked a deluxe room with Fruit, Chocs dressing gowns and slippers. Well I am still waiting for the fruit & chocs!! As for the dressing gown that had seen better days it smelt musty and there was only one pair of slippers ! There's artexed walls everywere it was like bedrock at one point I expected to see Fred Flintstone & Barney Rubble appear.

The bathroom had been modernised but I'd like to meet the person who designed the shower over the bath you either broke you back trying to get your head under it or you pulled it out and drowned the floor!

The bistro menu was a joke as was the food my husband asked for ice to take back to our room you would have thought he'd asked for gold! The breakfast wasn't much better the sausages were cheap and the rest of it tasted of nothing.

The spa is a box with SPA written on it correct me if I'm wrong but doesn't a spa consist of a pool, sauna, steam room & treatment rooms??

Now the good points THE VIEW!! They should knock it down and start again.

Room Tip: Don't bother staying here unless you are only interested in an amazing view

Thank you for taking the time to comment, we value your feedback.

Deluxe rooms do indeed come stocked with the extras that do make a guest’s stay more enjoyable. However, it would seem that on this occasion, these extras weren’t included. We have taken steps to identify what happened, and are working to prevent this issue in future. We would like to say however, that we always appreciate it when guests let us know if there’s anything missing, so that we can have the opportunity to rectify any issues before it’s too late.

We are also pleased to advise that there's plenty of ice available now via our bistro, and that stocks are available should guests require them. Please ask, and we'll be happy to help.

All our food is locally sourced where possible. Great pride is taken when preparing breakfasts, and our usual excellent standard is something we're famous for. We are sorry that you found reason to mention otherwise, and would always encourage any guests to mention any concerns at the time of stay, to enable us to assist as quickly as possible.

We look forward to welcoming you again soon.
