went to the black bear with twelve friends for a golf weekend had a fantasic time. Was concerned with the poor reviews but they couldn't be further from the truth. Hotel was clean staff could not do enough for us. Food was very good and cheap. Rooms were spotless. towels and bedding changed daily.
The new owners took the time to remember all of are party's names witch was a nice touch. Can honestly say can't wait till next time

came across the Black Bear by chance and had not read the previous reviews before we stayed, glad we didn't otherwise we might not have booked in.
Our experience was fantastic, from the warm friendly welcome when we walked in, until the next day when we left.
This is a old inn, so don't expect bland square box bedrooms, but if you want individual character, showing the true history of a place, you will love this place.
Quick mention, great food, freshly cooked and very resonably priced.
The people that run the Black Bear havn't been there long, but reading the other reviews they have alredy made a big impact on the place.
We will be back.

Room Tip: Is in center of town so might be quiter in back of hotel

Had a one night weekend stay at The Black Bear. Staff went out of their way to help us sort out where to put our trailer as no parking at hotel (but had no trouble getting close parking outside).

Food was excellent both evening meals and breakfast and very good value.

Bar is popular with locals but everyone was very friendly.

Our family room was fine. Double bed and bunks for the kids. this is an old hotel and the new owners are certainly making an effort and it was v clean with shampoos etc left out for the ensuite.

For £69.95 a night incl breakfast for a family room I can not fault the value or service. Great for a weekend break away to see wonderful Wareham and monkey world.

Had a lovely weekend staying in this historic coaching inn which has recently been taken over by new management. There was a lovely friendly and helpful welcome. The bar is popular and well used by locals. The bedroom was large with a full size ensuite bathroom (room 11). The whole building is old and you feel like you have gone back in time. It is well located in the lovely old Saxon town of Wareham and the Jurassic coast is not too far away. The breakfast was very filling and reasonably priced.

Had a weekend away and stayed in a comfortable room. It was clean and bright. The staff were friendly and very nice. Breakfast was brilliant. Will go again as ideal for seeing alot of Dorset quite central without being in the hussel bussel of touristy places. When you live in a tourist place you look for somewhere quieter. Found our way around and anything we didnt know we asked.

Room Tip: no pool who needs it, Parking in square over night 7pm to 10am then pay unless blue badge.I dont do...

Have to say i never write on these sites as it is personal experiences that differ from person to person.

We stayed on 29 December 2012, by We I mean my partner and I, his son and 3year old grandson and our dog.

They were in room 15 - family room, and we were in rm 4.

It has recently (few months?) been taken over by a lovely couple who are rapidly refurbishing the rooms. Yes rooms were bit basic but if you want a true classy place... don't stay in a pub!

We ate in the bar in the evening and had breakfast in the morning. The food was excellent! Yes, it is a creaky building but it is an OLD building. We really enjoyed our stay and will return.

Decor was bit tired but again the ambience was good. everyone was really friendly towards us all adults, child and dog!

We will return! :-)

The Fentimans

Room Tip: higher floors will be quieter during the evening. no disabled access to rooms: lots of stairs!

I'd suggest the moaning Minnies on this website go and stay at the Travelodge in Poole!  My partner and I have just spent a comfortable and enjoyable (Saturday) night at the Black Bear.  No, it's not the Ritz - that's because it's a pub (a historic former coaching inn) and full of character.  Our room could have done with redecorating, but it was clean and had everything we needed in the way of towels, soap etc.  As it was the weekend, there was live music in the bar - we went in for a drink and found the place friendly and welcoming to strangers.  The music was loud and we could hear it when we went back our room, but it stopped before midnight, after which we had a good night's sleep, followed by a hearty breakfast the next morning.  All in all, great value for money.  I understand the Black Bear has recently had a change of management - they might want to redecorate but I hope they don't feel the need to make too many changes!
