“What a shame!!”
Reviewed 28 November 2011

This was not a cheap hotel and although the rooms were immaculately clean, they were very dated. The colour scheme was odd and the rooms seemed cramped. There was a good sized bathroom and coffee making facilities. The service was very good and welcoming and the breakfast was superb. The snag was with the beds which were so worn that the springs were on the surface of the mattress, making for an uncomfortable night's rest.
Such a shame as it is in a beautiful location and the building itself is pretty.

Checked in and were helped wit our bags to our bedroom, which although on the small side was well equipped. plenty of fresh towels and toileteries.
Breakfasts were freshly cooked and ingredients of good quality (although the kippers were
were not to be recommended).
Evening meals were good and well priced.
All in all, ideal for a stopover or weekend stay.

If you want a good bar lunch, or sunday roast...avoid this place. The food is terrible.

Recently spent an overnight at Meldrums while attending a family wedding just outside St Andrews. Had initially booked a hotel in St Andrews but felt I couldn't justify paying St Andrews prices when I would barely be using the room. Stumbled across the Meldrums website and booked two doubles and one twin room at a rate of £75 per room B&B. The hotel is an old coaching inn and is very pleasant and cosy. Owners/staff were all very friendly and attentive. The rooms were all spotlessly clean and were decorated in red and cream which was very bright and cheery. The rooms all had an ensuite shower room, tea and coffee facilities and a small tv. There was also parking onsite. The only downside was that the soundproofing is not very good so I would recommend earplugs for a good nights sleep! I have given the hotel 4 out of 5 not on the basis of it being luxury accomodation but on the basis of it being a very pleasant and comfortable guest house/small hotel for those on a budget wishing to visit the St Andrews area without paying St Andrews prices or having to worry about parking which can be an issue in St Andrews. The restaurant at Meldrums seems to get a good name and indeed my parents are planning to go for lunch when they next go to St Andrews. We certainly enjoyed our breakfast!

Official Description (provided by the hotel):
Nestled alongside the Ceres Burn, Meldrums Hotel is a mid-19th century coaching inn that marries Iberian cuisine with the rustic charm of Scottish hospitality. Our passion is great food and great service. We believe that each and every guest deserves only the best from the moment that they arrive: a warm welcome from our staff; a pre-supper cocktail - using the best ingredients and perfectly-mixed; the finest cuts of meat and seasonal produce cooked to perfection; attentive, yet discreet, service; and rustic surroundings from which to watch the world pass by. Our suite of rooms are a home away from home and are ideal for those wishing to absorb the culture and history of Edinburgh and St Andrews or to escape to the wilds of the Highlands. Our menus are eclectic. We source our ingredients from local farmers and merchants and complement them with the finest imported cheeses, meats - including the Pata Negra - and spices. Our dishes embody the very best of Iberian cuisine. ... more   less
