Nicely decorated and a good venue for our group of 24. Order was taken on arrival we then had plenty time to chat and hold our meeting. Food was served at agreed time and group all served promptly. Menu was varied and gave a good choice of different items to suit our group.

The chocolate & Baileys sundae was very good- worth going back for that alone.

Special mention to Jo who looked after us so well.

Thanks

Attended recently for a quick bite to eat at lunch time. Service wasn't good from the get go. Stood around at the till area for a while despite a number of staff being there. The restaurant wasn't full.
Ordered soup to start which was pleasant and came with a nice chunk of granary bread. However that's where the good points stop.
My husband ordered a tuna sandwich which came on a cheap slice of brown bread. I could have made better myself. When you order from a small village restaurant you expect nice fresh bread. Why didn't they use the same loaf they served with the soup??
Next we had ordered some scones & jam. Equally disappointing. The scones were dry & didn't taste fresh at all. There were even strange lumps in the scones like the mix hadn't been stirred properly. The jam was homemade but was very watery & didn't taste pleasant.
The food wasn't expensive but even for the price was poor.

We tried the Covenanter on 18 October 2011, shortly after the current owners took over, when we suffered a poor meal with not much better service and felt obliged to post a review reflecting that. It's taken us a while to pluck up the courage to try the place again, but we did last night and were very pleasantly surprised.

All of our previous criticisms appear to have been addressed. The staff without exception were pleasant and efficient, the menu now boasts several appetising vegetarian options, the food and wine were extremely enjoyable and everything was very modestly priced and extremely good value. It's imaginatively prepared and presented pub grub, but done well (as it was), there's nothing wrong with that. We'll be returning soon and if our most recent experience proves to be typical, the Covenanter will be back on our list of regular haunts.

The portions are generous, so if you want to try pudding (and the brioche bread and butter pudding is well worth a try), you might want to consider skipping starters, unless you are very hungry.
