“Booking cancelled”
Reviewed 7 June 2013

As our 14 April booking for 21 May to 24 May was cancelled by the Crusoe Hotel with barely 24 hours prior notice, we were thoroughly dissatisfied. The reason for the cancellation was a very inspecific "damage to the room". Curiously, staff at the Crusoe were unable to say what the damage was, which is quite difficult to believe. Damage to a room in a relatively small hotel that renders the room uninhabitable will certainly be known to all hotel staff. We asked for a more in depth explanation but none has been provided by Lynn. Consequently, we became doubtful that we were given the true story.

While we understand that things do happen, the lack of communication from the Crusoe management is not understandable. We did go to the hotel even though the booking had been cancelled. Staff on duty advised in person that they did not know what the damage was, but that they were sure there was no fire, water, or smoke damage to our assigned room. We were not given an opportunity to judge for ourselves if the condition of the room was acceptable to us. Sadly, requests for specifics that are met by lack of knowledge, generalities, and silence will be taken as negative.

To management's credit, we were offered three nights and a complimentary meal at their sister hotel, the Dunnikier House in Kirkcaldy, which we accepted for one night due to time constraints, and, finding Dunnikier House completely unacceptable for our purposes on several levels, we moved on to the Caledonian in Leven which was much more appropriate for our needs.

As we were not provided with the booking for which we were charged a booking fee, we requested a refund of that fee. We did not cancel, the Crusoe Hotel cancelled us. As of this date, 7 June, we have had no response to that request either.

My partner and I stayed here for one night only. On arrival staff were really nice and friendly. Room was a good size and had good views over the water but there was so much condensation in between the panes of glass that we had to pull the windows up to enjoy the view.
The room as did much of the hotel needed a makeover but it was clean. The bed was actually two single beds pushed together so was not as comfy as a double. There was ample hot water but the shower had very little pressure. It was a cold day when we stayed but the heating came on in the room about 4pm and was lovely and cosy then.
Breakfast next morning was delicious with a varied menu of hot food, along with cereals, fruit, juices and plenty of freshly made tea and coffee.
Again when we were leaving the staff were very friendly and although the hotel is old and tired we still enjoyed our stay

We came across this place by chance and had a bar meal here. It was very good and the service was swift, friendly and efficient.the whole place was buzzing with a pleasant atmosphere. There was a group from Eyemouth having a sing-song in a large upstairs room, turned out it was an annual trip they made. the hotel was large enough that his was not obtrusive. Recommended as a place to eat, wish we'd stayed here.

Went for lunch today in the crusoe hotel. Had lovely meal, friendly staff, nice atmosphere. Highly recommend it. Can't comment on the rooms as only went to lunch. The beef burger was served with a hunky home made chips, delicious.

We stayed for 2 nights last week. The rooms are maybe a bit old fashioned, but you have everything you need. It is nice when you sleep with the window open you can hear the sea at night, it's very relaxing.
The food in the restaurant was excellent, we had no long waits even that our party was 8 people.
The breakfast in the morning was even better than I expected it to be, enormous choice of cooked breakfasts + small buffet.
Even the meals in the bar were good, however I prefer the restaurant, the bar is a bit too noisy for me. Overall, the experience of staying in this hotel was fantastic.

Room Tip: Ask for a room overlooking the beach

The Crusoe Hotel is just a walk along the beach from where we live and it is a place I have visited many times over the years. The setting is lovely - right on the pier and during the summer there is seating on the pier where you can enjoy something to eat and the gorgeous views. It is a very popular place with locals and visitors alike and is one of my favourite pubs. Being local I've never stayed overnight, so can't comment on the accommodation. However, we have eaten there many times and it has always been good and the staff extremely friendly.

We popped along for a bar lunch the other day and booked before-hand. When we arrived the table wasn't ready and they had to move other patrons out of the seats to accommodate us. We waited about 20 minutes for anyone to even give us a menu and then when the waiter came to take our order he was more interested in the football match showing in the bar.

When the food eventually came it was very nice. I won't deny that. However, it's not cheap. £9.95 for a burger is a bit excessive we thought. £6.25 for a prawn cocktail is also a bit on the steep side in our opinion and it didn't look any different to any other prawn cocktail you would and can get elsewhere for half that price.

I appreciate the day we were there it was extremely busy with lots of people watching the football but there didn't seem to be enough staff to cover the amount of people they had.

I'm still going to give the place a very good marking, because it is. It is well worth a visit. However, if they expect the place to be busy, please have more staff because it can put any potential new customers off returning and that would be a real shame.

Stayed here 3 nights, 7th March to 10th March. Room 10 overlooking beach, fantastic sight to see waves battering the shore. I should have been out there surfboarding, but not in winter. Delicious food, bowl of Scottish mussels in wine and cream, and proper chips. Fresh poached eggs for breakfast. Staff friendly and the room warm and comfortable. Just the best place to stay

Room Tip: Room 10 overlooks the beach - a super sight in winter, so must be wonderful in Summer
