“An excellent B&B in Brodick”
Reviewed 21 August 2013

We were taken very well care of by the Landlady and her staff the two nights we stayed here. We had a nice room in the annex with ample space and a big bathroom as well.
The breakfast was excellent, and we could compose our breakfast just the way we wanted it - in fact we did that already on arrival.
Rates were £40-42 per person by night.

Room Tip: It's a central location just outside Brodick and very quiet, so no need to worry about much nois...

This was my first visit to Arran although my husband had been four times previously. From the moment I contacted Ann by email I felt excited about our trip. Like others Ann offered to pick us up at the ferry and we accepted. We were made very welcome and Ann explained about bus timetables, where to go and where to eat, in detail. We were shown to our room which turned out to be a family room. Ann explained that as we had had to change our days and couldn't have the deal of 5 nights for the price of 4, which she was offering, she had given us a larger room. This was unexpected and so kind, we really appreciated it. As like the rest of the house the furniture and furnishings were excellent and very comfortable. We had ample cupboard and wardrobe space and a lovely en suite bath/shower. Everywhere was clean as it should be, we used to rent out a self catering cottage and are very much aware of the high standards required. The breakfasts were superb, ample variety, nothing was too much trouble. The service was just right, clearing away used dishes was fine as the table was set with everything you needed, no need for clutter. The atmosphere in the dining room was lovely, every morning we had easy conversations with other guests encouraged by Ann doing her "mine host" so well. We had a couple of coastal walks and my husband went up Glen Rosa while I pottered around Brodick. We visited the Country Park could have spent much longer, my husband caught up with his colleagues there, he used to work for the NTS. We used the bus service to see the west side of the island but there is still more to see! We were sorry when our stay ended and as before Ann took us to the ferry terminal. We will definitely return and hopefully stay with Ann if she'll have us!

Our stay at the Allandale could not have been better! We felt very welcome and loved our room and the wonderful breakfast. The home was clean and nicely decorated. Ann went out of her way to make our stay the best possible.
We will plan another stay, hopefully before too long!

Spent two nights on the recommendation of another B&B proprietor who could not take us.
In spite of all the "no smoking" notices around the house, there was a definite smell of stale smoke in some of the rooms, although there were air fresheners throughout. Our bedroom was OK though, clean and adequately furnished. It was a bit cramped as an extra single bed had been squeezed into the room although we did not require it.
Ann had offered to pick us up from the ferry as we were travelling on foot, but we did not take her up on this. We knew in advance that there is a steep hill to walk from the ferry to the B&B so that did not worry us.
Ann was helpful giving us bus timetables to plan our walks, and was fairly flexible about breakfast times. Breakfast was excellent and she even offered to make porrage for us, which was not on the regular cereal choice. Table service was a bit quick although not as rushed as reported by other reviewers.
A pleasant convenient B&B but not really worthy of the 4-star rating and corresponding price.

Room Tip: We had room 3 which although a fair size was a bit cramped with the extra bed. Didn't see any ot...

We loved our stay at the Allandale House. Ann was kind and generous with us and our 6 month old baby. We loved the food and Ann was flexible when we overslept and almost missed breakfast. She made sure we had enough space and were warm enough. She moved us to a better room without us asking. She went above and beyond what one would normally expect from a guest house proprietor. She even held our baby while we ate our breakfast! We recommend her and this guest house whole heartedly. My husband walked up and down to Brodick and the hill is not that big and the town is not that far (5- 10 minutes to the Co-ooperative).

Have just spent 2 nights at the allandale with my wife and 9 wk old baby. Reviews of this B&B sound like a tourism promotion not travellers actual experiences.
The B&B is situated at the top of a very steep hill (15-20 mins walk from the ferry) and I'm surprised this has not been mentioned as elderly guests or guests with physical disabilities would struggle getting to this location. (Mention has been made of Ann picking guests up from the ferry which is fine if you don't require transport for the rest of your holiday). We made our own way there however there was certainly no offer of taking us down to the ferry when we checked out and this appeared to be the case from other guests we spoke to at the ferry.
Breakfast was good. Full Scottish. On our first morning, however, the proprietor Ann, informed us (and another two couples) that we were all sitting at the wrong tables. Good start. She then asked who had come in last (who would know that?) and it was 'narrowed down' to a guest who was told he hadn't closed the door properly and was responsible for other guests not being able to get into the main house. Uncomfortable.
She cleared my breakfast plate while my wife was still eating hers and then cleared my wife's plate while she was still chewing her food. Not great.
On a note about breakfast, there was no coming or going about times. We were told breakfast would be served at 8:50am.
The furniture in our room (first one of the annex) urgently needs renewed. Aside from the bedside tables, the rest was old, worn and mismatched (and not spotlessly clean). Not even 2 star quality.
I did see one other bedroom in the main house and the room was tiny. Hardly room to get round the bed. Better decor however. I can't comment on television access in other rooms, but we had a sky box and freeview channels only (I only say this as other reviews may be misleading).
One last thing, when we were checking out, Ann said "I've only charged you for two" indicating that our baby, that slept in his pram, was getting a freebie....
Would not recommend.

We have just stayed 2 nights at the Allandale. First, the good points: the breakfast is great, staff serving breakfast friendly and the bathroom in our room was very clean. Now, the negative...
We have a new baby and were given a room in the annex which we were told was more spacious. There was a large bunk bed in the room which meant that with a pram and one suitcase the room felt really crammed. Definitely not suitable for a family of four.
Being in a B&B in Arran we were looking forward to some traditional taste, however, the decor in our room was awful. Furniture very old, none of it matched, the chairs were too low to sit at the desk, were completely worn (one had blonde hair all over it and crumbs... I was told this was an upholstery issue?!) and the light above the mirror didn't work. Ann, the proprietor, appeared friendly, and if you were travelling alone, would perhaps be an ideal hostess, however the next morning, straight after breakfast, she knocked the door several times wanting to clean the room. Despite telling her I was going back to bed, an hour later there was more persistent knocking. And an hour after that when we were trying to get ready she told us twice the lady that cleans the rooms had left and insisted on coming in to change our towels. Our presence obviously interrupting the cleaning routine! Not what you need for a relaxing weekend with a baby.
We were in Arran for a wedding and were fortunate to see other B&B's and can say this was not representative of the hospitality (or decor) of other guest houses. I have no idea how this is a 4 star establishment and think the £80 per room is excessive. Would not recommend.
