My friend and I, who often head to Arran for some walking, decided to make a short visit this time to visit the brewery and distillery. We went on a weekend in the middle of February, when the weather was far from brilliant, so upon arriving at the tourist information in Brodick, we expected to get a room without any hassle. This proved not to be the case, as many B&Bs were closed for the season. The lovely Ann at the tourist information centre began calling round various B&Bs for ourselves and another separate party of two, and wasn't having much luck at first finding a room.

Fortunately, the Barn was available and open for business. At first we were told that only a double bed was available and we explained to Ann that we didn't really fancy sharing a double bed! However, our brilliant host at the Barn (whose name I didn't catch) had set up a separate single bed in one of the rooms for us.

The house itself is located in Glen Cloy, away from the hustle and bustle (if you can call it that) of Brodick, but still close enough to walk. It is within easy walking distance to the Auchrannie Hotel which has a good restaurant and bar up the stairs.

Our room was very comfortable and spotlessly clean with all the mod-cons you'd expect including en-suite.

The breakfast served was fantastic too - with a full range to choose from, from traditional cooked, to fresh fruit, cereal and yoghurts - you would not have to worry about leaving the house hungry!

On our day of departure there was some disruption with the ferries, between bad weather and a smaller replacement vessel in operation - but once again our host at the Barn went the extra mile and offered to keep hold of the room until we definitely knew that we would be able to get home.

Despite only spending one night here on this occasion, I would have absolutely no hesitation in returning again.. Although next time I will book accommodation in advance and not chance finding a room at the last minute after arriving on the island!

Many thanks again.

We loved our short visit at The Barn, everything a B&B should be. We had wonderful and helpful hosts (thanks, Phil and Kath), delicious breakfasts, and congenial conversation around the table in the morning. The room was lovely with a comfortable bed and nice linens. We have been to Arran many times, and this B&B ranks as the best!

Just a wee note to thank Kath for looking after us during our visit to Arran. Lovely room with a cute and beautifully decorated ensuite. Fresh and delicious breakfast, along with fruit and yoghurts and the best buttered toast "ever"! Beautiful setting, but the only downside is the dirt track you've to use to get there. If you don't have a car, this isn't ideal. However, the actual B&B is recommended, so it wouldn't stop me going back.

I am so glad you had such a positive experience and enjoyed your room and breakfast. Thanks so much for taking the trouble to post this review. On the subject of the lane I have great news! After a long wait , just this week the landowner who owns our approach track has started work , lots of repair work has taken place and maintenance is ongoing. Hopefully if you come back again you will see a massive difference! Thanks again for your lovely comments.

The prior reviews brought us here..and we're grateful. Phil and Kath are a perfect blend of friendly, informative and helpful...and so good humored as well. The room was elegantly designed and the beds extremely comfortable. Even the bathroom had been carefully, whimsically decorated ...shower was hot and towels plentiful. Breakfasts in their intimate little dining room were a pleasure, ample, prepared to order...and if you weren't in the mood for eggs and bacon the selection of yogurts, fruit and healthy cereals was more than enough.

We're a hearty, athletic family...but it was a bit of a hike from the harbor because we had lots of luggage. Once we were settled, we appreciated the setting and made frequent forays on foot back and forth to town and beyond. Ask about the Brodick-Lamlash path...a wide trail over hill and dale that takes you off road and offers a quiet, timeless experience for several miles.

We spent a long weekend here with Phil and Kath who were, as others have pointed out, the perfect hosts. Our room was bright and spacious with a view towards Brodick Bay (soft Arran weather permitting). The bathroom had a separate bathtub and shower, although there is perhaps a problem with the capacity of the hot water tank as we were only able to run a deep hot bath on two of the four nights during our stay. The bed was extremely comfortable and the location is very quiet so getting a peaceful night's rest was never a problem. Breakfast is ordered the night before so everything runs very smoothly the next morning.

Kath and Phil are very knowledgeable about the island and are more than happy to provide tips about where to go and what to do. The only issue (and one that stops a 5-star rating) is the atrocious state of the approach road - half a mile of unsurfaced farm track which is now severely rutted with potholes, making every arrival and departure something of a challenge. So, leave the low-slung sports car at home and bring the 4x4 and you'll be ok!

Many thanks for this super review , we are delighted you enjoyed your stay with us.... we aim to please!
The approach road is currently awaiting a substantive upgrade by the owners , Arran Estates, we can't wait for this to happen , but meanwhile just take it slowly and you will get here easily ,as we do on a twice daily basis- however, that is what keeps us so lovely and peaceful , being off the beaten track with no passing traffic! Thanks again for taking the time to write this review

We were made very welcome and had found the B and B to be clean and comfortable. Breakfast was delicious. Location very peaceful, Roughly 10-15 minute walk into Brodick. We came back very late both nights but were not made to feel that this was a problem.

This is a small B&B located about 1 mile outside Brodick. We stayed for 4 days in both the double rooms (We were 2 adults and 2 children). Luckily we got some discount as some B&Bs are rather strict in just charging for 2 rooms - even when staying a bit longer.

The rooms are both spacious and bright. One has a small shower - very well laid out, the other bathroom is large with a shower and bath. Beds are very comfortable and there is plenty to read. There is also a small DVD library and both rooms have flat screen televisions.

Breakfast was very generous and tasty, only problem was that at 8.30am it was rather late if one wanted to have an early start - plenty of good walking country around.

Another minor point was the location of the bedroom of the owners, their door is right between the two guestrooms so there is some lack of privacy.

Many thanks for this lovely review, we are so glad you enjoyed our hospitality.
If we could just clarify the privacy issue , which confuses us slightly - there are four doors off the landing and one door leads to our accommodation . The two guest rooms are to the left and right of the stairs and both have lockable wooden doors. Of course having Dad and Mum in separate rooms with a child in each room makes for quite a lot of cross landing activity , not usually the case!!
An early breakfast can always be provided on request, no problem at all.
