We have dined at the Melville Inn on numerous occasions and been delighted with the food and service. However, our visit on Saturday 27 Nov was quite disappointing. The service was appalling. You get the distinct impression that the kitchen staff can't cope with a busy restaurant. We had to chase our order after 45 minutes (the starter was their selection of breads and oils which didn't seem to be too taxing to prepare!!!) Two of our main courses had to be returned - the mushy peas were cold and the "seasoned" chips were limp and quite sorry looking. I said "seasoned" chips but failed to taste any sort of seasoning - apart from the salt that I added. We could hear customers in the vicinity of our table complaining also. On paying the bill you are normally asked "was everything OK" - not on this occasion - I think the staff had been instructed not to ask because management were quite aware of the poor service they were providing.. I hope that the poor service we received was a hiccup not to be repeated because we really enjoy visiting the Melville. We will give them "another go" and hope that improvements are made to the service. I'm would have loved to give the restaurant an excellent rating but, on this occasion, I'm giving it an overall "average" . However I will input another posting when I visit again and hopefully upgrade my ratings.
