“A nice hotel with a lovely whisky bar but ...”
3 of 5 bubbles Reviewed 5 October 2013

We stayed in this hotel for two nights during the Dufftown Autumn Whisky Festival in September 2013. The hotel looks very nice, has a friendly staff but is very old fashioned. Even the smell is 'old fashioned'. The whisky bar is fantastic but the food in the restaurant, we made our choise from the 'today's specials', was poor ('venison casserole' and 'sliced meat with whisky sauce' were served without vegetables or salad, accompenied by a doubtful glass of red wine). Breakfast being served in a beautiful separate room was very fat. All together a good place to stay when you are visiting the Speyside region but better go somewhere else for dinner.

Very mixed! The staff at first appeared nonchalant, but with a determined effort on my part to be friendly, this was reciprocated, and this continued throughout my stay. Some areas, e.g. the bar/restaurant, were well-maintained, with carefully chosen replacement windows and some original ones. The bedroom I was in was freshly decorated and spacious, with good fixtures and fittings. The evening meal was well-cooked, tasty and substantial - I would recommend it.

The first sign of something less satisfactory was the tatty decorative order of the outside of the building at the rear. Then came breakfast, served in a very drab room, and although served with a smile was not up to much and disappointing after the great evening meal. Most concerning though was the discovery that the hotel is unstaffed overnight, and that any emergency is handled by the first guest to notice something raising the alarm, then everyone taking care of their own evacuation. It doesn't take too much imagination to think of scenarios where this could be disastrous. It is my main reason for being very wary of any return visit.

we chose this hotel for a 1 night stay. the hotel itself was extremely dated and the staff were less than helpful. we woke up with a complete stranger lying on our floor. this was because the spare keys are kept at an unmanned reception and the front door of the hotel is left wide open all night so anyone can help themselves to any room in the hotel whilst people are sleeping. when we complained to the staff in the morning they did not want to know and ignorantly walked away shrugging their shoulders. for my own safety i will definitely not be staying here again.

Stayed one night for business reasons, hotel is a bit dated but staff very friendly. Food was very good although a bit slow on service, breakfast was very good. Room was spotlessly clean and fair priced. I stay in hotels regularly and would stay again. Locals were very friendly in bar areas

We are at a loss to understand the less than favorable reviews some others have given. The room we got here was spotless and fairly priced, and the dinner we had was very good as well, as was breakfast. We spoke to several locals who eat here regularly and think highly of it. The desk and wait staff were on top of things. Would not hesitate to stay or eat here again.

Following a luke warm welcome we were taken to clean but basic rooms looking on to a weed strewn carpark. The decor throughout is dated and dismal and in need of modernisation. Dinner was served in a busy bar area, plain cuisine but acceptable. Overall the impression was unfavourable and I will be unlikely to return.

Room Tip: unlikely to find a ''good''room here

The Gordon Arms in Fochabers has been a handy little place to go for a local meal with my Mum along with various relatives for years but, trust me,this will be the last time.
With my brother up on business all the way from Yorkshire,we decided to get together with Mum for a convenient local meal. After being directed to a small round table in front of the bar,we asked about the bigger table in the corner, even though it still had to be tidied up,and that was ok.
All downhill from there though as the table never got cleaned, the drinks order never got taken and we were asked to move to the little round table in front of the bar again, just incase they got a party of 4 in. Well,we sat at the little table and waited,no orders taken again and we were off!
