Owner description: Located on the outskirts of the ancient market town of Forres lies Benromach Distillery. From a small and almost lost distillery emerged a single malt withdistinctive qualities reflecting its hand made credentials as well as encapsulating the self-reliance, sophistication and modern values of Scotland today.Established in 1898, the distillery experienced many closures and changes in ownership prior to 1993, when malt whisky specialists, Gordon & MacPhail rescued it. Following an extensive reinstallation project, embracing the distillery's original character, Benromach was officially re-opened by HRH The Prince of Wales in 1998.Just three experienced distillers create Benromach using the finest Scottish barley and the purest spring water from the nearby Romach Hills. They personally ensure that only the highest quality spirit is filled into sturdy oak casks before being left to mature at Benromach Distillery for many years.

“Flawless personal tour”
Reviewed 2 September 2013

Called in here and tried their Essential Tour for £12.50/person and did not regret this decision at all. Even though there is no photography, we happened to have a completely personal tour and since we already know a thing or two, that turned out to be just right. There is a great introductory DVD of both the distillery and Gordon & MacPhail, who are the owners. Instead of going over basics again, we could hunt for specialties of this distillery, and were tested on our knowledge a few times. Even though our guide Jim wondered why we ever bothered ("Why did you ever come up here? You know everything!"), we still learned something we did not know previously. After the tour, it was time for four Benromach expressions; especially the virgin oak expression (Benromach Organic) is quite unusual. Got all the notes we needed, and tried some more in the shop before it was time to go. Their shop has most of the Benromach expressions plus some souvenirs. If you like whisky, this is an excellent tour to book; I would return again for some more. 9.6 / 10

“Small and intimate distillery”
Reviewed 12 August 2013

From the welcome we received on arriving for the tour, throughout the tour and during the tasting we were treated as friends, rather than visitors. This was the smallest distillery I visited and as such, it felt very intimate. I was able to see the cask filling and weighing area, which I hadn't seen on tours to other distillerys. There are actually more guides that distillers here. The tasting was expertly led and I was able to sample a few of their different malts, which were particularly good.

“Friendly little place”
Reviewed 1 August 2013

I decided not to take the children on the tour but the staff were still very friendly and helpful and pointed us to the large grass area and picnic benches beside the warehouse where the kids and I played and enjoyed the sunshine while the rest of our group enjoyed the tour. Our group really enjoyed the tour and tasting. The staff even gave us a map of Forres and directed us to Grant park where our group ended up having a lovely picnic.

“Cheers.”
Reviewed 1 August 2013

What a great little place. We booked the essential tour for 3, and as there were only another 5 on it, it was a little more personal. Jim knows his stuff and took great pleasure in showing us around this delightful little distillery. It's great to see small places can get a very good foot-hold in such a big market, and it's a credit to the owners.
The tasting experience was excellent, with oat cakes and water provided to enhance the tipples.
Have to admit I thoroughly enjoyed them all with the organic one topping my list, however it wasn't the one I left the shop with. And thanks to Jim I've learnt just how a little tear drop of water can make such a huge difference.

“One of the best”
Reviewed 29 July 2013

Benromach always make real efforts to treat all their visitors well. The tour guides are either ex distillery workers or undergo extensive training. Highly recommended.
