Owner description: Located on the outskirts of the ancient market town of Forres lies Benromach Distillery. From a small and almost lost distillery emerged a single malt withdistinctive qualities reflecting its hand made credentials as well as encapsulating the self-reliance, sophistication and modern values of Scotland today.Established in 1898, the distillery experienced many closures and changes in ownership prior to 1993, when malt whisky specialists, Gordon & MacPhail rescued it. Following an extensive reinstallation project, embracing the distillery's original character, Benromach was officially re-opened by HRH The Prince of Wales in 1998.Just three experienced distillers create Benromach using the finest Scottish barley and the purest spring water from the nearby Romach Hills. They personally ensure that only the highest quality spirit is filled into sturdy oak casks before being left to mature at Benromach Distillery for many years.

“Great tour and tasting”
Reviewed 9 October 2013 via mobile

A small, intimate distillery with a tour and tasting to match. Friendly, knowledgeable staff. If you are a whisky lover and in the area be sure to stop. It is well signed off the A 96.

“Excellent”
Reviewed 9 September 2013

Great little distillery.. All very friendly, personal tour with lots of information - they know what they are doing. Don't miss filling your own personalised bottle.. Take pics there as well.. Nice choice of whisky to buy. Do go there. There is no cafe but just drive the 5min to Findhorn and go to the Kimberley Inn , sit by the sea and have a wee dram..

“Another one not to miss out”
Reviewed 7 September 2013

Been to many distilleries, but this one affirmed again the idea that the smaller ones are the better, at least if if comes to tours and staff.
This one is one of the last remaining independent ones, so no "no-photo" policy and all the other big-player rubbish. This is a real tour with a guide who knows the stuff as he likes it and a photo on the corridor wall proved that he was already working there some 30+ years ago.
The Whisky is very nice as well, well balanced and a must have for any serious collection.
They open on Sundays and there is ample (free) parking, but no cafe/restaurant.
We have only seen one little brown signpost on the main road, so quite easy to overlook.

“Best in Scotland”
Reviewed 4 September 2013

Sandy was our tour guide and he did an amazing job of showing us around and explaining the operation. We had been on other tours but, this was by far the best of the bunch. His knowledge of the distilling process was outstanding and reflected his many years of experience. We took the Essential Tour and it was worth every penny. Would do it again when they get some older product. The young stuff has potential but, not quite there yet.

“Flawless personal tour”
Reviewed 2 September 2013

Called in here and tried their Essential Tour for £12.50/person and did not regret this decision at all. Even though there is no photography, we happened to have a completely personal tour and since we already know a thing or two, that turned out to be just right. There is a great introductory DVD of both the distillery and Gordon & MacPhail, who are the owners. Instead of going over basics again, we could hunt for specialties of this distillery, and were tested on our knowledge a few times. Even though our guide Jim wondered why we ever bothered ("Why did you ever come up here? You know everything!"), we still learned something we did not know previously. After the tour, it was time for four Benromach expressions; especially the virgin oak expression (Benromach Organic) is quite unusual. Got all the notes we needed, and tried some more in the shop before it was time to go. Their shop has most of the Benromach expressions plus some souvenirs. If you like whisky, this is an excellent tour to book; I would return again for some more. 9.6 / 10
