We have been to the Sands before, but it was a few years ago and it was ok.The difference is amazing the A la Carte and Bar Menu are both excellent and it is very difficult to choose. The staff are also a real plus, very friendly and attentive. We were lucky enough to get in the conservatory, as it was a beautiful evening. All in all, a lovely evening. When you visit Orkney, you MUST go there

Our family traveled to Edinburgh, the East and West Highlands and Orkney. This restaurant was hands down the best food (as well as the best prices) of the entire trip. We enjoyed the fish and chips (flavorful and not greasy), salmon served over chick peas and vegetables, scallops (served in entirety with Thai curry). These dishes were accompanied by fresh perfectly cooked vegetables and potatoes. These unique flavors and perfect preparation were unique over our two week trip. The staff was also highly accomodating, as they served us dinner after we arrived on the last ferry, despite that fact that they were closed. We cannot recommend this restaurant enough. Thank you for the great experience.

Excellent hotel, staff, food and owners! Close to Churchhill Barriers and the lovely Italian chapel. 5 minute drive from the Pentland ferry. Lovely clean modern room. A credit to Orkney and great base to see the island.

We had visited this hotel for morning coffee and then, on anothe day for lunch. On both occasions the food was good, served by very smart friendly capable Staff.
We booked at table for dinner for another evening. When we arrived the two young very inexperienced Staff could not find the reservation, however we did get a table. We decided to try the a la carte menu. The somewhat scruffily dressed waiter seemed to have little knowledge of the disappointnig wine list, his more smartly dressed companion proved little better.
We ordered roast lamb, imagining that, on an island famous for its sheep, it would be a good choice. The meat was disgusting. It consisted of ready prepared, precooked, sliced, ready to be heated, tasteless grey slices surrounded by a very strange liquid. The only blessing was that this liquid was also devoid of taste but had an unpleasant slime like consistency.
I complained about the meat and our waitress said that she would inform the chef. After this she ignored us,as did the waiter. After a very long wait we received the bill without any apology or explanation. Then followed another long wait to pay, before we went to the bar. Our money was accepted and both members of staff carefully avoided eye contact - shame presumably.

Delightful, friendly staff, exceptionally clean rooms, good food - perfect. From the minute we arrived we were impressed. Nothing was too much trouble. Very helpful and efficient. Nice family 'suite'. Breakfast and dinner - first class. I'd love to go back again - maybe even for a longer stay.
