“A good end to a great holiday”
Reviewed 21 June 2014

I, my wife and two friends had dinner at the Sands Hotel on 16th June 2014.

We knew nothing about this hotel before we booked a table but the experience was excellent. The staff had the balance between providing all the information we needed and a relaxed friendliness just right.

There are not a huge number of places to eat on South Ronaldsay and the hotel could have taken the easy option to serve average food, but it did not. Two of my party had the scallop starter and were very pleased and my vegetarian meal was very good.

When the bill arrived we spotted a mistake on it, but before we could alert the waitress, she arrived at our table to apologise for the error.

All of us were very pleased with our meal and, if you are staying on South Rolandsay, I would recommend the Sands.

We stayed here for one night, having turned up on spec. Very pleasantly surprised by the reasonable price for a beautiful, comfortable room with great views across the water. The shower was great and the bed was comfy. We had dinner here and it was gorgeous - the lamb was divine. We had a few drinks in the bar afterwards. All the staff were friendly and helpful and a lovely fresh cooked breakfast in the morning set us up for the long journey home.
This is an ideal location for exploring the south islands and Burray is very quiet, but peaceful and relaxing.

Room Tip: Rooms on the first floor have great views.

Driving into Burray and to the hotel itself I was a little concerned. What a surprise when I entered the room! I had booked us into a suite -Scapa - and how nice it was was. The outside of this building does not do justice to inside the modern and updated rooms. We entered and out of the lounge window we had a lovely bay view. There is a little eating area, bathroom and kitchen also downstairs. Upstairs there was a main bedroom and a second room with 2 single beds. We ate in the restaurant attached to the hotel for both dinner and breakfast and could not fault it - our poached eggs were nice and runny. The room was clean and tidy. I would recommend the Sands Hotel and it is only a 5 min drive to St Margarets Hope for the ferry and no more than 10mins from the Italian Chapel.

Room Tip: The current pictures on the internet look like the rooms. We stayed in the suite - Scapa. Saw a stan...

This is not a motel at all and once you get past the uninspiring exterior, you will find a surprisingly comfortable newly refurbished hotel. We stayed for a week in a suite - two bedrooms upstairs, spacious lounge with kitchen and bathroom downstairs - all spotless, everything you could need, loads of room and great views of the bay. Appreciated fluffy white towels, strong shower and toiletries, also free wifi. The restaurant is clearly popular with locals and gets busy; the varied menu ranges from bar dishes such as fish and chips to more elaborate options such as local lamb or scallops in white wine and garlic sauce (which were delicious). Good base for exploring southern Orkney.

Two nights at the Sands Motel was not long enough. Perfect location, wonderful room, great food what more can one ask for. Probably two of the most amazing days out of twenty one that we spent in the U.K. My husband and I weren't sure if we would have time to travel so far north but we really were determined to see at least one of the Orkney Islands. What a treat... the scenery was beyond belief, the hikes were invigorating and the arts and crafts by the local artisans were beautiful. I have souvenirs that will forever remind me of the magical time spent in the Orkneys.

This hotel is a real find. We were in Orkney (not exactly a metropolitan location) for a birding tour, and this is the hotel used by the tour company. We were here for five nights, and ate in the hotel restaurant every night. So we really got to know the hotel and the restaurant. Both were great. The hotel was nice, clean and comfortable. The rooms were not big by American standards, but big by European standards in my experience (and plenty large enough for the two of us). Plenty of closet (armoire) space and dresser space. We were especially pleased with the restaurant -- who would think that a restaurant in a fairly remote place like Orkney would be so good? There was plenty of choice on the menu for five nights in a row dining here. And the breakfast was excellent. The staff was all friendly and helpful. A great place to stay and eat in Orkney.
