“Perfect stay”
Reviewed 22 June 2014

We selected this hotel for our weekend stay on the Orkney Mainland as it was close to most of the attractions we wanted to visit. It was a perfect selection. On arrival we were greeted with a warm welcome and shown to our room.

The room was a good size and had a double bed and a single bed. There was also a small desk and a wardrobe and a TV. The bathroom was fairly small with a toilet, washbasin and a shower cubicle.

The room and bathroom were both clean, and the beds were also clean and comfortable. There was a free wifi connection which was useful for connecting my tablet to pick up my emails and to catch up with the news.

We had a nice dinner in the hotel restaurant. The meat we had could perhaps have been a little bit more tender, but all the dishes were well presented and tasted good. Breakfast was included in the rate and we were well looked after.

The only negative issue was that our room was directly above the bar, and as it was Saturday night it was quite noisy. But thankfully the noise subsided quite early and by the time we actually went to bed there was little to disturb our rest.

All in all a very pleasant stay and definitely a hotel I would recommend for someone on a short trip to the Orkney Mainland to visit attractions such as Skara Brae, Meas Howe, Ring of Broadgar and the Standing Stones at Stennes.

Have been here for dinner now a few times and it has been fabulous each time. Lovely fresh ingredients well cooked. Greay service and very good value. And unlike many other establishments in orkney even the vegetables are lovely. Have never stayed over but if the quality if the meals is anything to go by I would love to. I would certainly recommend for an evening meal. Lovely wee place.

Stayed here for two nights with my daughter. It is perfectly situated for visiting the ancient monuments in Orkney, being central to all of the ones we were interested in seeing.
Greeted at the door, and shown to our room
The room was clean and well furnished, the beds comfortable, and facilities were in great order.
Breakfast was filling and plentiful, and lasted all day till we got back at night.
The bar was welcoming, and the locals were friendly. Ate both nights in the restaurant, and the food was superb. Would recommend the hotel to anyone visiting the islands

Ok - the hotel was ok too! It is old fashioned but it is on Orkney so don't expect City delights. It is clean - I had loads of toilet paper (just read another review complaining of the lack of the stuff) and had no problem filling in the form the night beforehand regarding the breakfast. The second night we were there we tried the restaurant and I have to say the food was excellent. Don't really have much more to add - it is what it is. The owners are very welcoming and the staff were lovely.

We stayed here for three nights. Dounby is about 15 miles from either of the two towns on the mainland of Orkney but it is very well located in terms of touring the major attractions such as Skara Brae, Maeshowe, Brough of Birsay, Skaill Bay, etc. We were late arriving but Ivy greeted us and made us a meal even though it was after 9pm. The pub was really a family recreation room and our grandchildren had a wonderful time playing pool and darts. The proprietor was very friendly and we truly felt like welcome guests. There was a selection of breakfast choices which were served promptly and as requested. This is a very old, small hotel which has had modern amenities such as ensuite bathrooms added as an afterthought but they were well done and the rooms were clean and comfortable. They have a new restaurant added at the back of the hotel which does excellent evening meals.

We stayed there for 3 nights and there are some good and bad points. The decor is dated. I had to keep reminding the staff to replenish the toilet paper, shower gel etc. I could have got some from the co op opposite. Guests are expected to complete a card the night before stating their breakfast options. Despite this we and the other guests had a long wait to be served. On a positive note, the breakfasts were good, the owner was friendly and helpful as were the staff when reminded of requirements

Came here for dinner when staying in Deerness. The food was of a good quality and very fresh. The scallops were a highlight as was the Orkney fudge cheesecake, which can be a bit of a stodgefest, but in this case was light and delicious. Would definitely return as there were many things on the menu which we fancy trying.
