We arrived in the dark the directions to the place were very vague and it took several calls to the owner to establish where it was exactly and they were just as vague. The cottage was very unwelcoming no lights had been left on for us and the heating had not been put on either. there was a fire made in the fire place but it was that damp the matches wouldn't light or the paper either. The whole place place was cold damp and fusty. The bed clothes were also cold and damp and it took several hours of the heating on full and the fire eventually lit before the place felt comfortable. on closer inspection the following morning the cold slate was found to be wet with damp in quite a few places including the wardrobe .The middle bedroom was air conditioned with a hole in the ceiling that the wind blew through. the views through the wet mouldy window frames can only be described as over grown and agricultural with a stack of tyres covering a silage heap. the back of the property is not child friendly as it has derelict farm machinery and tumbledown buildings ,several abandoned vehicles and a rotting caravan corpse litter the area .The facilities can be summed up as being tired and meagre. this would be a ideal holiday let for those willing to experience the life and hardship of a nineteenth century crofter .We left the same day having spent only one night there.
What a lovely, warm comfortable place to stay in an easily accessible location. My wife and I, with our dogs, have just returned from 3 idyllic weeks here and would only have 2 complaints. 1) No Wi-Fi--- and until now, I did not realise how important that was to me and 2) not enough cooking pan lids!!!!!
Apart from that, we had a wonderful time and THANKS!!!!!
How can I describe this wonderful interesting and characterful cottage .....it oozed history and the spirit of Orkney while being warm, welcoming and modern. The location was perfect, we loved the west mainland and the cottage is in a beautiful rural setting whilst also being so near to everything we wanted to do. On arrival we walked round the property and every room was a treat. We loved it and never wanted to leave. This place is a hidden gem.
We really loved staying in this house. It is full of character and yet with every modern comfort and convenience. Although the house is close to a working farm, we really didn’t notice this and found the location to be completely quiet and private. All you can hear are the geese and curlews in the surrounding fields.
Furso has a really excellent location - you could not possibly be more central for getting around the Mainland of Orkney - it's really close to Maes Howe and the Ring of Brodgar and being in the centre of the island, it's not far to any where else. Fantastic views of Hoy through the window made for wonderful sunsets.
In addition you have a very modern house in terms of facilities (heating worked extremely well and quickly, mattresses new and comfortable) but a great experience in that the decor and fittings inside give a sense of a crofting life in the past. Very quiet location in rolling farm land, view of the loch. Perfect!
