Jim and Denise are great hosts. The evening dinners are wonderful and the location could not be better. Jim fixed me up with fishing - including tackle and has a great link to a local ghillie with an uncanny ability to find trout on the world class lochs. House looks over the water to Roussay and is next to the world class RSPB Birsay reserve for Hen Harriers.

I have been going to Evie for many years, and this "new" up-market B and B is just the number.

Just perfect.

Andrew

Room Tip: I used 2 rooms and both were superb

We spent three nights with Jim and Denise in their lovely home from the 3rd to 5th of August 2013. It was immensely enjoyable and the service we received was second to none! Despite the fantastic setting of the house and the wonderful views, the real gems in the whole set-up are Jim and Denise. They were the perfect hosts in every way with great hospitality! Wonderful food and good company goes a long way!(Jim is a great cook AND has a wealth of Orkney knowledge!) It was one of our best B&B experiences ever! The day we left, my usually very shy 4 year old son said: 'I'm really going to miss Uncle Jim!!'

We had a superb stay at Castlehill in July. Our hosts couldn't have been more friendly, the house was lovely, and the food - especially Jim's fish and Denise's home baking - was delicious.

For local attractions, I would recommend the RSPB's Birsay Moors reserve (where I watched displaying Red-throated Divers, Hen Harriers, and Short-eared Owls at close range, 10 mins walk from Castlehill), and the impressive Broch of Birsay archaeological site (just down the road).

We spent three days in Castlehill from 29 to 31 of July 2013. Location is very nice, great view on the coast and on the isles, 17 miles from Kirkwall, on the NW coast. Very close to Neolithic monuments and sided to natural reserve. But the best are the people running the estate:we arrived with a couple of problems ( our luggage was missing on arrival and the rental agency had been unable to give us a car) and they helped us a lot to solve them successfully. Especially the car issue could have spoiled our holiday /BTW, traveler in Orkney should be aware that find a car in peak season is really a problem there, be advised to get firm reservation well in advance), but Denise phoned to a lot of friends and was able to find us a car.
Breakfast is very good, with local and home made products (very good yogurt and scones), Jim is passionate of cooking we had also excellent dinners there. Very warm and nice environment, with nice conversations with them.

We've been there two days, and we have been pampered throughout.
Jim and Denise are very pleasant hosts. They go the extra mile to help.
The food is excellent, always freshly prepared, and in abundant quantity; they gave excellent advise about what to see in Orkney based on our preferences, and they did all the bookings for us. We recommend Castlehill and would definitely go there again if we return to Orkney.

Lovely rural location, very nice rooms, well appointed. Delicious meals - and welcoming hosts - Jim and Denise are generous hosts and make your stay special. A glass or two shared in the little conservatory most memorable.

Castlehill enjoys a quiet elevated position with fine views over the coast. The accommodation is immaculately clean and furnished to a high standard. Fine locally sourced food and home baking. As others have said what makes Castlehill exceptional is Jim and Denise. It felt like living with good friends for a few days. Their welcome is warm and genuine, and they were very helpful. Don't expect a passive stay - expect to be engaged in conversation and to enjoy good company and humour.
