we arrived at woodwick late on a sunday night where we had pre-arranged a late meal even though it was 9.30 by the time we arrived. We relaxed in one of the lounges with a drink and then were shown to the dining room to eat. Dinner was good, not exceptional, but very tasty, good ingredients and ample portions - nice enough we chose to eat there on our last night too.
The room was large airy and clean, the onsuite was equal to this, being as big as many a hotel room we have stayed in itself! Decor was fine, but don't think this is going to be a boutique hotel, it has a quiet charm of its own if a little in need of a little TLC.
We were lucky enough to have great views of the garden and also the drive, not that we spent a lot of time in the room with the busy itinery we had for exploring Orkney! A walk down to the end of the garden to view the water was well worth it, a romantic spot with not a soul bar us (and the cat who had accompanied us) as far as the eye could see.
Breakfast was good, a choice of cerals or porridge, lovely organic wholemeal toast (extra requested every morning solely as we were being greedy as adequate was supplied!) then a choice of options for cooked breakfast, much walking was needed to make space for lunch...Staff were polite and helpful but not intrusive at all times.

In summary I travel a lot mainly in 5* accomodation with work and whilst this hotel does not match in facilites (but equally not competing in terms of price either), it is quiet, charming and relaxed. I would not only recommend it to friends, I would come back again myself if we are in Orkney again!

Woodwick House may not offer cutting-edge decor but this is a wonderful place to stay. The big house has a fantastic setting within one of the very few wooded areas on the island. The semi-wild gardens are great for a stroll and there is a small river that tumbles down to a secluded beach with views out to a small island. The rooms are comfortable and spacious, although not all have en-suite facilities. There are 2 sitting rooms with comfy sofas and masses of books. There is also a music room with a baby grand piano. The dining room opens out to a wisteria-filled conservatory. The food in the evenings is very good, with the menu changing daily (all locally-sourced organic). James and his staff (including Thorfinn the cat!) provide a very friendly service. Woodwick House is a very relaxing place to stay and is highly recomended if you are visiting the Orkney Islands. It is located about 20 minutes drive from Stromness or Kirkwall and is easily accessible by car. We really felt 'at home' during our recent stay.

Staying at Woodwick House is like staying at an old friend`s- a welleducated , cultured friend who likes good food, books , unusual music ,art , has a `green ` attitude to life and lacks the money and the inclination to espouse the modern and the minimalist school of interior design .So if you expect a boutique hotel experience you will be disappointed but if you don`t mind a bit of eccentricity you will be charmed.Yes , the house could do with some renovation , especially on the outside but the setting in a lovely semi wild garden and wood with an old dove cot and a burn running by and a path to the seashore more than compensates for slightly faded splendour.
Contrary to some previous reports our room was clean, the bed and pillows were very comfortable. Toiletries were basic, shower gel and liquid soap eco friendly, the en-suite shower roomwas simple but clean with soft towels and plenty of hot water and the service we had was relaxed but excellent. The food at dinner was delicious-meltingly tender fillet steak, minted lamb shanks, lemon crusted monkfish. Meat is straight from the farm from a local butcher.Breakfast too was fine- orange juice, prunes and Greek yogurt, organic muesli, full cooked breakfast and variations of as you wished with kippers on offer . All the china is made by a local potter and lovely it is too. Dinner is served by candlelight in front of a log fire, very cosy. There were two warm sitting rooms and a fire lit in one after dinner.Tea is provided free on request, a note in the room tells you this, .The room furnishings were simple but who would want to sit in a bedroom with two sitting rooms and a garden available? We enjoyed meeting other guests and sharing travellers tales and very much enjoyed our stay .

Has potential, but the room was filthy, the bed horrible and service mediocre. The location was off the beaten path but potentially
lovely. The food was very good.

As you can see from the other reviews, Woodwick is not for everyone. If you are looking for four or five star luxury above anything else, than Woodwick, and probably Orkney in general is not for you. If you are interested in exploring a truly magical group of islands with a remarkable history from a very welcoming and comfortable base with more than a little magic of it's own, then read on.

As a leader of photography tours to Scotland, I have brought four groups to Woodwick House since 2003, and they have all not only enjoyed their stays at Wodwick, but many have commented on how much the warm welcome, and casual, friendly atmosphere enhanced their appreciation of Orkney. The rooms are simply, but comfortably appointed, all have wash basins if not an attached bath, and all are squeaky clean. Certainly book the ensuite rooms if available, but don't pass up a chance to stay at Woodwick just because a room with private bath is not available.

Woodwick House is situated on it's own private bay in one of the few woodlands on Orkney. Spend some time exploring the grounds with its many surprises, or relaxing with tea or coffee in the library by the fire on a rainy afternoon, and you'll no doubt slow down and soak up the wonderful atmosphere at Woodwick House.

The evening meals at Woodwick are top notch, and a highlight of any stay on Orkney. Abundant local seafood, and naturally raised grass fed Orkney beef and lamb are specialties. Finish your meal with a wee dram of Highland Park, the local whiskey, and a moonlight stroll around the neolithic Ring of Brodgar, and your visit to Orkney and Woodwick House will always stay with you as a cherished memory.

I for one can't wait for my next visit. Thank you James, Stefanie, and Emma!
