Enjoyed a week’s stay in which for the most part, the sun shined. Small but well thought out accommodation in the rural heart of Orkney. The islands have lots to offer, food (consider booking even some of the Tea rooms), scenery, history, wildlife and walking. We were self-catering but provided with breakfast, bread, cereals, etc. and baking on arrival. Rooms were very clean; there were lots of books and maps to plan days ahead. Although attached to the property, the owners were unobtrusive. The stay exceeded our expectations and was very good value.
Just returned from a week self-catering at the Grainstore feeling refreshed and windswept!
Ideal rural location just a few minutes drive away from the Mainland sights. We were warm, comfortable and happy with all facilities. Peaceful, surrounded by several animals (no noise), farmland, hills and moorland. Hen harriers can be seen during a short walk towards the moorland. Our hosts were delightful and so kind. We couldn't find a car to hire for first couple of days on Orkney, so we were collected from Kirkwall airport by our host, taken via supermarket to the cottage and driven 2 days later to Stromness to collect our hire car. They even drove us to a restaurant (Merkister Hotel - great) the first evening and we enjoyed the walk back amidst amazing lighting.
We were loaned 2 bikes to explore the island at no extra cost, while we were car-free. We could easily cycle to the Ring of Brodgar, Maes Howe, Stenness etc.
Everything in the cottage was in tip top condition and we even had some provisions provided on arrival, including fresh eggs and homemade rhubarb muffins. I couldn't recommend this accommodation highly enough.
After the long drive from Norfolk we were most warmly welcomed by our hosts. Without being at all intrusive they were on hand to help with questions about our island visits and other amenities.
The accommodation was warm and well furnished, with all that was needed to give us the feeling of relaxing at home!
The location gives stunning views across Mainland Orkney and is perfectly situated to enable easy access to the main birdwatching and archeological sites.
The garden is a delight.
What a 'find'
The Grainstore is a beautifully appointed accommodation with all you need if you chose to self-cater. It is easy to find as it's next door to the well signposted Corrigal farm museum in the middle of "Mainland".
The owners gave us a most friendly welcome and they have a wealth of knowledge of Orkney, with lots of tips for things to do and places to eat.
They have, it is clear to see, lovingly restored The Grainstore into a fabulous home and separate guest wing in a most wonderful setting.
The bedroom is wonderfully furnished in a tasteful modern fashion, as is the bathroom. The kitchen has all you will need.
The private garden offers amazing views across Orkney, with some lovely seating areas.
We cannot recommend more highly, the Grainstore as a base for exploring the amazing scenery, bird & animal life, and historical sights that Orkney has to offer.
One day, we will revisit these unique islands and without hesitation, we would book again at The Grainstore.
This cottage is situated very conveniently in the middle of Mainland. It is up a long lane but is easy to find as it is right next door to the well-signposted Corrigal Farm Museum. The hosts are friendly and helpful with good knowledge of the local amenities. We had bed and breakfast but self catering is also possible. Kitchen: compact; Shower room: luxurious; Living room: well equipped with comfortable beds and lovely views over the garden. Highly recommended.
