Well where to start, on our arrival we found out that two days earlier the place was flooded out. The owner was, to say the least stressed out, however undaunted she proceeded to look after us like a hospitality goddess. What a place! It is a museum of antiquity and you could be kept amused for ours just wandering about the place looking at the furniture and nick nacks festooned about the place. Three of us shared the flat, a house within a house within the loft of the mill house. I slept (really well) in a double cupboard bed.The best bit, was breakfast, laid out like an old fashioned banquet table with all the guests seated around a very grand spread comprising all manner of comestibles. The breakfast itself, excellent, setting you up for a days fishing. Our landlady, Morag, a lovely lady, was on top form, under some very trying circumstances. Oh I will be back!

Room Tip: If you are sharing with friends, take the attic flat.

We spent two nights at this lovely renovated mill and were delighted to be shown to the Hopper Suite on the top floor. Lovely view from our windows of the rural surroundings, and we loved the gentle sound of the mill stream below. The mill is ideally located -- close to Stromness for shopping and entertainment, but well positioned for drives to the many wonderful historic and cultural sites of the West Mainland. Morag, the owner, provided great directions from the ferry. She is extremely knowledgeable and genuinely interested in making things easy for her guests. The Hopper Suite could easily accommodate 5 persons as there was a separate bedroom from the larger room where the comfortable sitting area was located and an additional large, canopied bed was tucked away. The suite includes a large room with a shower and separate tub and lots of instant hot water. I was delighted to discover the extra amenities that included a full size first aid kit, large sewing kit, shoe shine supplies, and playing cards. (Exploring in the drawers and nooks and crannies was fun!) I really think that Morag could provide almost anything that one could possibly need. We enjoyed the breakfast choices and talking with the very interesting fellow travelers, all of whom were extremely enthusiastic about the many wonders of Orkney. The only reason I am rating this B&B a very good plus rather than excellent is that the bed and pillows in our room really were not comfortable. I suspect that this will be cured in the near future. That said, everything else was fine and we were delighted to stay at this unique lodging and would not hesitate to stay again.

This converted water mill is ideally located in the countryside between the two main towns of the island. It almost goes without saying that it is set in beautiful countryside - this is true of most of Orkney. The owner, Morag, who is hands-on, good-natured and humorous makes feasts for breakfast, and she is ably assisted by her very pleasant and helpful daughter-in-law Margaret. The decor is in keeping with a mill - the antiques and curio ambience is judiciously balanced by being clean, warm, well-appointed and well-run.

Room Tip: Don't over think the room selection - they are all fine.

My wife and stayed at the Mill of Eyrland, Stenness for 5 nights recently and thoroughly enjoyed the whole experience! A very quaint historical building, with even some of the mill machinery on show around the house, it was a very interesting visit. There were also picture albums and pictures on the walls of the Mill in the various stages of renovation in the past!
To crown it all, our landlady Morag Robertson just could not do enough to make our stay a really memorable one! One only had to ask and whatever it was duly appeared - whether it was an extra heater or porridge for breakfast!
We had absolutely no difficulty finding the place as Morag had sent us (very) detailed instructions on how to reach the Mill from St Margaret's Hope. I am sure she would do the same from Stromness, although that is both very much closer and also much easier.
The Mill of Eyrland was in a very quiet and peaceful location and we had a very nice room, with a four poster bed no less!
Our only concern was that our room had a tendency to be quite cold in the late afternoon when we arrived home after a day out. We did have an electric heater which warmed the place up fairly quickly, but the central heating only came on in the evening and it did take a while to warm up.
But other than this, our room was just great! Lovely crisp fresh bedlinen, plenty of towels and all the more normal room/bathroom additions - tea, coffee, shampoo and so on. Our four poster bed was extremely comfortable and we slept very well every night in a wholly relaxed atmosphere.
The Mill had wifi largely in the guests' first floor lounge, although it could be a bit iffy on occasions, but we managed alright if you picked your time.
Breakfasts were taken in the ground floor dining room, around a huge table where there were so many things on offer. There was a simply lovely and almost incredible array of jams and marmalades and all sorts of other things as well. Moran would take individual cooked breakfast orders and you simply had to ask and your selection would arrive remarkably quickly - most impressive indeed! Taking breakfast around a huge table with all the other guests gave plenty of opportunity for a chat with others if you wanted to and Morag frequently joined in the discussion and answered questions for everyone! Throughout our stay, Morag was extremely generous with her time and her hospitality was simply without end! Thank you so very much for that!
Moran was also most helpful and a really good tour arranger for all her guests - and was ideally placed to do this as Tourist Manager for the Orkney Islands Council. She knew the best way to get to places, what to see when you got there and also where to eat, drink and visit. Morag arrived home about half past five every evening, so on your first day you should not arrive before that time. After that of course, you have a key!
Parking at the Mill was not a problem, once you found the way in! There was a large yard and plenty of parking space for seven or eight cars.
If and when - and I am sure it will be when - we return to Orkney to visit some of the other islands (this time we stayed on the Mainland), we will certainly stay at the Mill of Eyrland again if we can - we so thoroughly enjoyed our visit and can really recommend it as a very good centre for exploring the Mainland. But without a doubt, our very enjoyable stay was made even better by our wonderful hostess Morag who so very obviously enjoyed having people to stay and made them all so very welcome!

I stayed at The Mill with my partner for 2 nights over a weekend and absolutely loved it. Incredible place, impecible detail. Morag was so welcoming and generous with her time and accommodating when we had a mix up with the booking. This was a perfect ending to our 2 years living and exploring Scotland. We'd both highly recommend The Mill if you are exploring Orkney.
