“Almost got it right”
Reviewed 4 July 2013

Stayed for four nights from 1st July : 5th July 2013. Hotel is located perfectly for touring the islands. Entire hotel is clean, bright and fresh. Young servers are excellent. Ate in the bar all four nights. Food was pretty good. Although my haggis lasagne on the third night was half the portion size my wife had on the first and fourth night. Only criticism though was the awful music played every night in the bar. Might have suited young barmaids into rock music but was nowhere near what the forty to fifty year olds eating in the bar wanted pumped out. If it wasn't for the music it would have been a five.

Room Tip: Pay the additional £15 charge for a loch view. Worth every penny.

Excellent, central location for exploring sites of interest. Very welcoming, everso friendly staff, nicely decorated, spotlessly clean and our room overlooked loch-stunning. Fresh local food and yummy homebaking on offer with excellent service. Despite buzz of guests from coaches there was an 'easy' pace which is unique to island. Nothing was bother and will definitely return.

Just stayed at the Standing Stones, and used as a base to visit Orkney. Great central location, with good access to major sites, including views over the loch to the neolithic stone circles. Hotel was very clean, and newly decorated. Great bar and good food, throughout the day and evening. Biggest selling point is the friendly and helpful staff, who were able to offer advice on good things to do, even including the wider family of the staff! Will certainly return for another visit.

Room Tip: Rooms at back of hotel are quieter

Room nice and big. Freshly decorated. Spotless. Shower clamp broken. Nice thick curtains in room six - but they were an inch short of touching each other which meant daylight coming in from 5am. Good Guinness in the bar. Ordered the burger from the bar menu which was still rather raw in the middle. Breakfast lovely.

There is wi-fi in the rooms, but it's a bit slow.

Cannot comment on price as company paid.

Room Tip: Check your curtains actually close :-)

We visited the Standing Stones for lunch as part of a private tour with Orkney Uncovered. The hotel is located beside a beautiful loch. We were sitted in a lovely looking conservatory and chose to go for the soup and sandwich. Both of which were delicious. There was a large coach of tourists in but our guide for the day and hotel arranged for us to be seated in a quite location away from the crowds.

We did not stay in hotel but if we come back to Orkney we will certainly give the Standing Stones Hotel our business as the staff are very well mannered and attentive.

Walked from Dounby to this hotel, passing the atmospheric Ring of Brodgar and the Stones of Stenness. The hotel is under new young management and is to be highly recommended. The rooms are excellent and the food very very good. The hotel is on the main road betwwen Stromness and Kirkwall and is within walking distance of Maes Howe, a must see ancient monument.
