“Great salmon sandwiches, service a bit slow!”
Reviewed 7 June 2014

We stopped here for lunch while visiting Orkney for the day. We had heard that the soup and sandwich deal which is great and around £6pp. We both ordered the smoked salmon sandwiches which were very good indeed and the soup was tomato and basil. Both delicious!

However the service was fairly slow and waiting a good 25 -30 minutes for our food was a bit of a wait. In fairness to the hotel they had a couple of coach parties in and it was very busy. Overall a good enough place to stop for a light lunch if you are not in a rush.

Room Tip: We ate in the restaurant and did not stay in the hotel.

We visited the hotel twice for food only during our stay in Orkney - it’s in a rural setting close to the visitor attractions of Stones of Stenness, Ring of Brodgar and Maeshowe.

Our first experience was with our guide from Orkney Uncovered for a lunch break during a private tour of Mainland. We were expected and had a table reserved in the lounge beyond the bar. To maximise time spent on our tour the guide and I just selected paninis and my wife had a baked potato. Service was very slow and at one point our guide went in search of the food, wondering like us, how long it takes to prepare a fairly basic snack. When it came it was nice enough and at £5.75 for a panini and £5.95 for a baked potato not bad price-wise. When settling up for us all I was surprised at the bill including drinks was only £18 however the barmaid indicated our guide was getting a complementary lunch. She also apologised for the delay in service put down to a rush in the bar after we arrived - I would have thought that having arrived prior to this we should have been unaffected. I think we were out of sight, out of mind.

Our next experience was a few days later for an early evening meal which we had in the bar. It’s a nice enough layout and had a bit of atmosphere with some other guests eating or just in for a drink. The menu is not huge but covers standard fare - we opted for Chicken Satay and Lime and Lemongrass Crab Cakes for starters. There didn’t seem to be a lot of crab meat in the cakes but they were ok - my wife enjoyed the chicken satay skewers. Next I had Scampi & chips with side salad and my wife had Chicken & Bacon Lasagne with some salad and garlic bread. Both these dishes were decent portions and tasted fine. By the time we added a pint of Scapa beer and a G&T our bill was £38 which again was very reasonable. Service on this occasion was much improved thankfully.

Fairly standard bar food with variable service levels in our experience.

"Just perfect" is what I would call this hotel,if anyone was to ask me where to stay when on Orkney!!
We stayed from the 1st of May for 5 nights..The moment we arrived through the front door and checked in at the reception, it was 1st class service all the way..Linda & Alan the young couple that own and run the hotel along with their staff couldn't have done any more for us.
They were all very helpful, all very friendly and worked very hard as a team together.
Our room was bright spacious and clean, the bathroom was spotless with piping hot water in the shower..Stunning views over to The standing stones of stenness and the ring of brodgar.
So the location is bang on...The hotel has a separate dining room,a public bar,a lounge and a separate residents lounge...So no matter how busy it gets you can always find a wee corner of your own.
The hotel has a great bar menu and a super a la carte menu too..Something to suit all dietary requirements...We ate in the hotel each night as we were so pleased with what was on offer..Their Bailey's Cheesecake with Orkney Fudge is to die for...I'm afraid I had one of them each night (yum! yum!) So I will be back on the treadmill shortly :-( They also have a varied breakfast menu too..Something for everyone...Quite honestly I can't praise this wee hotel highly enough...I urge anyone visiting Orkney to check out The Standing stones hotel...You won't be disappointed!!...We will be back next summer that's for sure!

Room Tip: Top floor!

Just had an evening meal at this hotel.
Choice wasn't great and meals were a bit pricey.
Best part werethe starters, a crab and salmon mousse, and an apple fritter with black pudding. Both these starters were excellent.
The main courses though were a bit disappointing but ok as such.
Only one local ale available and that ran out.

Excellent hotel with a family like setting. Excellent restaurant with a good food variety including buffalo meat. The hotel is located off the beaten path (not near city shops but has a good view of the standing stones and North Sea). This is the first hotel I have given an over all excellent grade.

Room Tip: Try to get a top floor room - there was some squeaking floors above me noted at night. Say hello to...

Stayed at this hotel as part of a shooting party for 4 nights, location was perfect, easy access to the rest of the island. Food was spot on and the staff were excellent. Rooms were clean and comfortable if slightly dated but for our purposes they were perfect, nice bar and good pub grub. Had a good chat with the owners who could not have been any more accommodating. Overall very happy...
