Great base for a memorable holiday

4.0 of 5 bubblesReviewed 18 Jun 2023via mobile
Older style hotel in a magnificent situation next to a loch across from the Stenna Standing Stones. Lots of bird life here.
Rooms were comfortable, staff friendly and breakfast excellent.
Rooms clean except for the windows which we noticed when trying to take a photo of the magnificent sunset which was after 10pm.
Would definitely recommend this hotel, especially after driving through the narrow, crowded streets of Stromness. It was lovely to have the space around us yet not be far from the ferry.

We reserved through Booking.com and this hotel stay was THE WORST part of our 2 week trip to Scotland. When we checked in the manager was leaving so she just asked if we were who we were and handed us the key. We let her know we had to leave very early to catch the ferry and asked if someone would be there later if we had questions. We made clear that our phones could not make international calls to which we were told that she responds very quickly to messages through the website. The room had no phone and there was no house phone which made this frustrating. When we were walking to our room we saw her get in her car and leave. There was no staff available until the restaurant opened which was mediocre and overpriced but we were able to charge it to the room. We messaged the hotel after dinner asking about how to check out but received no message. In the morning there was still no staff available so we sent another message that we left the key in the room. Apparently this hotel does not automatically charge your credit card when you go through the website so we ended up getting multiple phone calls the next day while we were driving back to Inverness about paying the bill. We gave our card over the phone to pay for the restaurant and hotel but she apparently only charged the dinner. We then got a non-payment alert from the website, after emailing the hotel AGAIN we got a response and were able to pay for our room. Apparently they did not update their records because I just got another non-payment notification through the website.

Apart from the customer service, the hotel was mediocre. The bed was hard, the furniture was old, there was no phone in the room, and it smelled old despite obvious recent renovations. I will say the location was great - close to the ferry and the stones but the customer service was a nightmare.

A real shame. Clearly in close-down mode - even to the extent of pool table sold and no draft beer (or taps of any sort) on the bar. Staff (all 2 of them, the manageress and an extremely hard working assistant) doing their best, but pushing water uphill with no other support or investment in even the basics.
Breakfast was awful and presentation of buffet was almost laughable - e.g. bunches of bananas put straight on the table. If you are going to charge full prices, at least provide a full service or appear to care about service and facilities provided. There is no way I'd have booked this if I had known it was for sale/closing down with an obvious objective of wringing every last cent out of it before the owners move on. Such a shame, as could actually be a nice place again with some tlc. I pity the poor tourists from oversees staying here and this being their impression of Orkney hospitality.

Double Rooms are small, comfy beds, nice bathrooms, but nowhere to hang towels. One chair for 2 people. Do not eat here! Ordered starters and a vegetarian main, they had run out out of the one vegetarian option and suggested a creamy pasta and mushroom dish instead. No starters arrived, waited 50 minutes for a dried up chicken breast and a cold mushroom pasta dish. The cheese board is a joke, £10 for 4 thin slices of warm slimy tasteless cheese, a tiny pot of chutney and 4 small oatcakes. It’s the first time I have had a cheeseboard with more grapes on it than cheese. Very poor wine selection and no knowledge of the drinks menu. Absolute shocker. The only saving grace is the view from the Loch side rooms.

The hotel is in a beautiful position although it was built facing the wrong way! The ancient stones are in the near distance behind the hotel.
We were warmly met at reception once we found it due to the lack of signage.
Our room was on the first floor. We chose a Loch view so we could see the ancient stones. Sadly our window glass had so much condensation in it due to a failed double glazed unit we had to stoop to look out. On looking out of the window it was disappointing to see broken roof tiles along with grass and weeds in the gutters.
The room was clean and you can tell it has been recently painted but it would benefit by painting the out dated pine woodwork to bring it up to date.
The bathroom was clean and serviceable but had no ventilation which meant the room was soon full of steam.
We ate in the hotel but were disappointed by the quality of the food (way overpriced) and the service was poor with 1 member of staff and the chef. Some of us didn’t receive what we ordered and 1 side order never arrived at all. We were told they were short staffed.
Breakfast was a breath of fresh air.
Great food and excellent service from all the staff.
We would not stay here again as it is in need of a more substantial makeover than it has had already.

Room tip: Avoid the restaurant, very expensive for average food

This hotel is located perfectly for a home base to explore beautiful Orkney and surrounding Islands. The hotel itself has clearly had the rooms recently renovated and presents well. The current owners are new to the hotel and I hope moving forward they will look at a few improvements. Opening the bar in the afternoons or well before 6:30pm would be great - a comfortable area to sit ins rainy afternoon or just to discuss the day. The reception area upon arrival was a closed office door with a phone number. that’s fine if you have international roaming. The restaurant staff were ‘all’ in training which made the evening meals seem like an episode straight off Fawlty Towers. Breakfast was great, parking excellent, wifi in reception area excellent, albeit the room we were in the wifi was 5 - 2mbs (unbearable). Re our room; very small and the mattress was extremely hard (thank god for ibuprofen). This room was adequate for a couple nights but not for a week hence us cutting our trip from 7 nights to 4 nights. I would also note that there are other rooms that are a lot larger so if we were to book again these would be what we would request.
