OK for a 1 night stay

2.0 of 5 bubblesReviewed 8 Jul 2023
For a recently updated hotel it's very worn n tired. Bar is well done but the rest is tired and in need of updating. Food was OK. Beds were so uncomfortable unless you like sleeping on a brick. Manager Heather isn't very welcoming n doesn't come across as friendly. Website n descriptions are not very accurate. Rooms are very small There are however 2 positive points to this hotel and that is its location for touring about and the young staff members who are all exceptional and friendly n helpful. They make this hotel and if it was updated would be a great place.

The Standing Stones hotel is beautifully situated with a lovely walk to the rear alongside a sea loch, which is home to a large number of different birds including swans. However, the building fabric is very tired, lots of chipped woodwork and not very clean. There was long-standing seagull poo on many windows. Sadly the bar and restaurant area is absolutely soulless. On the first morning the restaurant staff failed to turn up to serve breakfast. On the third and final morning there was no one in reception to deal with the bill and checkout - clearly there are staffing problems.

Older style hotel in a magnificent situation next to a loch across from the Stenna Standing Stones. Lots of bird life here.
Rooms were comfortable, staff friendly and breakfast excellent.
Rooms clean except for the windows which we noticed when trying to take a photo of the magnificent sunset which was after 10pm.
Would definitely recommend this hotel, especially after driving through the narrow, crowded streets of Stromness. It was lovely to have the space around us yet not be far from the ferry.

We reserved through Booking.com and this hotel stay was THE WORST part of our 2 week trip to Scotland. When we checked in the manager was leaving so she just asked if we were who we were and handed us the key. We let her know we had to leave very early to catch the ferry and asked if someone would be there later if we had questions. We made clear that our phones could not make international calls to which we were told that she responds very quickly to messages through the website. The room had no phone and there was no house phone which made this frustrating. When we were walking to our room we saw her get in her car and leave. There was no staff available until the restaurant opened which was mediocre and overpriced but we were able to charge it to the room. We messaged the hotel after dinner asking about how to check out but received no message. In the morning there was still no staff available so we sent another message that we left the key in the room. Apparently this hotel does not automatically charge your credit card when you go through the website so we ended up getting multiple phone calls the next day while we were driving back to Inverness about paying the bill. We gave our card over the phone to pay for the restaurant and hotel but she apparently only charged the dinner. We then got a non-payment alert from the website, after emailing the hotel AGAIN we got a response and were able to pay for our room. Apparently they did not update their records because I just got another non-payment notification through the website.

Apart from the customer service, the hotel was mediocre. The bed was hard, the furniture was old, there was no phone in the room, and it smelled old despite obvious recent renovations. I will say the location was great - close to the ferry and the stones but the customer service was a nightmare.

A real shame. Clearly in close-down mode - even to the extent of pool table sold and no draft beer (or taps of any sort) on the bar. Staff (all 2 of them, the manageress and an extremely hard working assistant) doing their best, but pushing water uphill with no other support or investment in even the basics.
Breakfast was awful and presentation of buffet was almost laughable - e.g. bunches of bananas put straight on the table. If you are going to charge full prices, at least provide a full service or appear to care about service and facilities provided. There is no way I'd have booked this if I had known it was for sale/closing down with an obvious objective of wringing every last cent out of it before the owners move on. Such a shame, as could actually be a nice place again with some tlc. I pity the poor tourists from oversees staying here and this being their impression of Orkney hospitality.

Double Rooms are small, comfy beds, nice bathrooms, but nowhere to hang towels. One chair for 2 people. Do not eat here! Ordered starters and a vegetarian main, they had run out out of the one vegetarian option and suggested a creamy pasta and mushroom dish instead. No starters arrived, waited 50 minutes for a dried up chicken breast and a cold mushroom pasta dish. The cheese board is a joke, £10 for 4 thin slices of warm slimy tasteless cheese, a tiny pot of chutney and 4 small oatcakes. It’s the first time I have had a cheeseboard with more grapes on it than cheese. Very poor wine selection and no knowledge of the drinks menu. Absolute shocker. The only saving grace is the view from the Loch side rooms.
