“A blend of old and new”
Reviewed 12 June 2014

The Burnside B&B is located within the farmhouse just off the main road leading into Stromness and is a 10 minute walk or so from town along a pavement with street lighting.

We booked about 3 weeks in advance for 2 nights in a double room at £85 per night B&B, subject to a 25% deposit. The fact that we got a room during the Orkney Folk Festival hosted in Stromness was thanks to a cancellation and although we’d previously been unaware of the event it triggered our purchase of tickets for a couple of nights entertainment too.

The property is a working dairy farm so if you’re offended by “country aromas” you won’t appreciate the outdoor areas - coming from a rural town ourselves and my wife from a farming family this was not an issue. Parking is alongside the house or in the immediate area.

Joy welcomed us upon arrival and after chatting showed us our room upstairs - Hoy View. It spacious and furnished in keeping with the age of the house - my wife was quite surprised to see a dressing table almost identical to one which her Mum has at home. It was even more surprising that Joy had gone to great lengths to source it to maintain the character of the room. There’s a cabinet and wardrobe to match so no lack of storage space. The bed is Kingsize and makes for a very comfortable sleep. Tea and coffee making facilities are provided together with china to drink them from and even a little bowl of Quality Street sweets.

In contrast to the traditional furnishings there is an iPod docking system, a small wall-mounted flat screen television with multiple channels and a large contemporary styled ensuite bathroom. This doesn’t have a bath however the rainfall shower more than makes up for that - terrific water pressure which surpasses even standing in the type of enormous downpour experienced over in Hoy when walking to The Old Man! The fitments are all high quality including an illuminated heated mirror and there is underfloor heating.

Although we had an ensuite room the bathroom for the room without these facilities was opposite our door and we did hear other guests late at night and early in the morning going out and in there.

Breakfast in the bright dining room was at a shared table for all the guests (there are 3 rooms). There is everything you could imagine available (and possibly more) and a particular highlight for me was the poached salmon pieces served in a bowl along with scrambled eggs on one morning - delicious!

The only thing missing for us was somewhere to store and dry wet clothing when returning from a very wet day on Hoy - it would possibly have been available had we asked.

We didn’t get an opportunity to eat out in Stromness itself due to our schedule but we enjoyed the Festival nights and the other attractions in the area.

Clean, convient to Stromness. Modern nice bathrooms (showers). Good breakfast. Rooms have all the nessary things to make one's stay comfortable. Not delux, but a good place for a night or two while touring Orkney.

Room Tip: Bed type would be my only factor in selecting one room vs another.

This is the ONLY place to stay if you are on the main Orkney island! Absolutely wonderful B&B. Stayed in the Scarpa Flow room with a great view and stunning bathroom. Loved the shower! Great breakfasts and the owner, Joy, features local produce and cheese made from their dairy cows. Clean, comfortable and lots of extra care. Cookies, chocolates and tea available in the room, reading library and lots of help on things to do and see. A short distance from town so it's nice and quiet and easy to find. Beautiful sunroom for a breakfast room. Definitely would stay here again if we can!

Room Tip: The two rooms at the front have the views, larger size and the wonderful showers. The back is room...

My partner and I travelled to Ornkey in March to see some of Scotland in the springtime. Orkney is magical, and the Burnside was the perfect place for us to stay and see some of the "Mainland." The B&B sits just above Stromness (5 minute walk, if that) which means it has STUNNING views. You can catch a bus across the street or in town to go most places on the island - though we had to take a cab to get to Skara Brae (well worth it!) in the off season.

We tend toward staying in apartments while traveling, so we can cook our own food, but we were both glad to have stayed at the Burnside for our first stop in Scotland: we learned so much about local farms, culture, history, sights, and context from Joy!

And what a wonderful B&B! Joy and Robbie made us SO welcome, from helping us figure out tricky transportation to the delicious and enormous breakfasts. We loved talking farm with Robbie and learning tidbits about the farm's history at the Stromness Museum. We stayed in the Scapa View room which was comfortable, well organized, had gorgeous views, and featured a recently renovated and lovely bathroom with a fantastic rain shower.

Thank you Joy and Robbie for a great experience!

Robbie and I were delighted to hear from you - your review was a lovely surprise. Thank you very much for taking the time to compile it. Summer is approaching here, and hopefully it will be warm enough in a couple of weeks to let the milking cows outside on the fresh grass. They love it when the barn gates open, and they are free to run...It is only 5 degrees today, so even if the doors were open - I don't think they would bother.

Stayed here just 1 night recently, made to feel very welcome, spotlessly clean and classy rooms, with one of the best showers I think I've ever had anywhere in the world.
Also had an awesome breakfast making full use of the abundant local produce.
we booked both the Scapa and Hoy view rooms at the front of the house, great views.
Can't say "it's the best in Orkney" because haven't stayed in the others, but if not, it certainly can't be far from it.

We stayed at Burnside for 3 nights during October. We have to say it was one of the best places we have ever stayed! Facilities were great and the breakfast was amazing! We were made too feel very welcome and would definitely stay again! Shame we missed the northern lights!
