The Burnside B&B is located within the farmhouse just off the main road leading into Stromness and is a 10 minute walk or so from town along a pavement with street lighting.
We booked about 3 weeks in advance for 2 nights in a double room at £85 per night B&B, subject to a 25% deposit. The fact that we got a room during the Orkney Folk Festival hosted in Stromness was thanks to a cancellation and although we’d previously been unaware of the event it triggered our purchase of tickets for a couple of nights entertainment too.
The property is a working dairy farm so if you’re offended by “country aromas” you won’t appreciate the outdoor areas - coming from a rural town ourselves and my wife from a farming family this was not an issue. Parking is alongside the house or in the immediate area.
Joy welcomed us upon arrival and after chatting showed us our room upstairs - Hoy View. It spacious and furnished in keeping with the age of the house - my wife was quite surprised to see a dressing table almost identical to one which her Mum has at home. It was even more surprising that Joy had gone to great lengths to source it to maintain the character of the room. There’s a cabinet and wardrobe to match so no lack of storage space. The bed is Kingsize and makes for a very comfortable sleep. Tea and coffee making facilities are provided together with china to drink them from and even a little bowl of Quality Street sweets.
In contrast to the traditional furnishings there is an iPod docking system, a small wall-mounted flat screen television with multiple channels and a large contemporary styled ensuite bathroom. This doesn’t have a bath however the rainfall shower more than makes up for that - terrific water pressure which surpasses even standing in the type of enormous downpour experienced over in Hoy when walking to The Old Man! The fitments are all high quality including an illuminated heated mirror and there is underfloor heating.
Although we had an ensuite room the bathroom for the room without these facilities was opposite our door and we did hear other guests late at night and early in the morning going out and in there.
Breakfast in the bright dining room was at a shared table for all the guests (there are 3 rooms). There is everything you could imagine available (and possibly more) and a particular highlight for me was the poached salmon pieces served in a bowl along with scrambled eggs on one morning - delicious!
The only thing missing for us was somewhere to store and dry wet clothing when returning from a very wet day on Hoy - it would possibly have been available had we asked.
We didn’t get an opportunity to eat out in Stromness itself due to our schedule but we enjoyed the Festival nights and the other attractions in the area.
