Owner description: The Neolithic settlement of Skara Brae, near the dramatic white beach of the Bay of Skaill, is one of the best preserved groups of prehistoric houses in Western Europe. Uncovered by a storm in 1850, the attraction presents a remarkable picture of life around 5,000 years ago. Visitors can experience a prehistoric village and see ancient homes fitted with stone beds, dressers and seats. A replica construction allows visitors to fully understand the interior of a prehistoric house.

We were on a coach tour of John O'Groats and Orkney and one of our stops was Skara Brae a Neolithic site in Orkney. Since it was unearthed, it has been extremely well preserved. I had been really looking forward to my visit and I wasn't disappointed. It was marvellous to see how the inhabitants lived in such a remote place and I would strongly recommend a visit.

The uncovered village is amazing, the stone technology of the era is hard to believe. This is a substantial site starting wit a vistor centre wiht a short film and some exhibits, then via a reconstruction of one of the houses via the complete village, which is the highlight. Then back through Skail House where the discoverer lived.
The cafe serves locally-sourced traditional Orkney food and is worth a visit itself.

The problem with Skara Brae is that it is a victim of all the advertising. The actual site itself is very interesting but much smaller than we expected. Everything is cordoned off (quite understandable) and well presented but felt rather sterile.
The cafe is also quite expensive!

What a place and to think that it lay buried for quite a long period of time! I enjoyed how the whole set up was laid out and followed some sort of pattern. Even in the rain, it was a little eerie to behold.

Skara Brae is a hidden wonder. It's the most remarkable ruins we have ever seen. They are protected yet the visitor can get very close and have an amazing experience looking at the well preserved ruins from the path above. It was a nice relaxed environment with no over crowding... It really is a must see for anyone visiting the Orkney Islands.
