The uncovered village is amazing, the stone technology of the era is hard to believe. This is a substantial site starting wit a vistor centre wiht a short film and some exhibits, then via a reconstruction of one of the houses via the complete village, which is the highlight. Then back through Skail House where the discoverer lived.
The cafe serves locally-sourced traditional Orkney food and is worth a visit itself.

The problem with Skara Brae is that it is a victim of all the advertising. The actual site itself is very interesting but much smaller than we expected. Everything is cordoned off (quite understandable) and well presented but felt rather sterile.
The cafe is also quite expensive!

What a place and to think that it lay buried for quite a long period of time! I enjoyed how the whole set up was laid out and followed some sort of pattern. Even in the rain, it was a little eerie to behold.

Skara Brae is a hidden wonder. It's the most remarkable ruins we have ever seen. They are protected yet the visitor can get very close and have an amazing experience looking at the well preserved ruins from the path above. It was a nice relaxed environment with no over crowding... It really is a must see for anyone visiting the Orkney Islands.

It provides a very atmospheric view of our distant ancestors. The site is perfectly preserved and well-signed and is in a beautiful location (even on a rainy day!).The reconstructed dwelling is a good idea and there is an excellent visitors centre.
