The hub for the busy folk festival. Food is consistently good, with a good choice and price range.
Staff are always pleasant and helpful.
Well situated in the centre of Stromness with ample car parking at rear.
Beds are comfortable, and the staff cope well, even with the extra pressure of a huge influx with the festival each year.

The hotel looks out onto Stromness Harbour which is a hive of activity with crab fishers and scuba diving boats. The interior of the hotel is a bit dated but rooms are large and well looked after. Food is good quality and very plentiful - fish in particular is to be recommended.

Room Tip: Take waterproof clothes - weather's unpredictable

We really loved this Hotel. Our Room was very big with a tremendous view, No. 3 if anyone is interested ! It had a huge bay window, with a sofa and armchair to sit and watch activities. Really lovely old Hotel, the corridor outside our room was about 9 feet wide, also a window there and sofa to admire the view of the Harbour, Ferry, and fishing boats coming in. It had recently been updated. It must cost a fortune to get any work done on that Hotel as the rooms are many and it is very spacious, with high ceilings. It was clean and warm, bit draughty by the windows in our room but it was blowing a gale outside. The breakfast room was smart and cosy, the breakfast very good. Friendly attentive staff throughout. There was the odd area that needed a little work. But I think visitors should stop and admire the beauty of such a lovely old building, its position and history. A few good natured revellers outside talking late Saturday night did not present a problem for us.

Room Tip: Ask for a room on the front.

We travelled to Stromness on The Orkney isles, the Stromness Hotel is situated on the Pier Head which is handy if you are using the ferry as we did.
A traditional holday hotel with large rooms (we were lucky enough to get one with a view over the harbour) bed was comfortable and breakfast was a delight.

I stayed at this hotel with a group of fellow walkers in 2012. Most of us were elderly and we were certainly not a noisy group. On three evenings at dinner we were told by staff to be quiet because the management of the hotel had booked another activity at the other end of the dining room or across the corridor. Apparently we were expected to eat in silence or converse in whispers.
The food was average and the facilities in the hotel were poor. That combined with the attitude towards guests was enough to make me say that I will never stay there again and I will never visit Orkney again.
If you don't want visitors don't take the booking.

Room Tip: Go somewhere else. This hotel only wants your money and doesn't care about its guests.

If you ever stay at this hotel, make sure that there is not any noisy party going on far into the night. I did not and paid the price of no sleep! Otherwise the hotel was passable but fairly old and run-down and without any particular attractions.

Room 12 is above the kitchen & when the kitchen fans are on it is very noisey. Hotel decor bit dated but clean. Staff very friendly and helpfull but time it took to serve a meal (over 2 hours)! Quality of meal nothing special.

Room Tip: Avoid room 12
