“5 day Orkney visit”
Reviewed 2 September 2013

Hotel is very close to the ferry at Stromness. Hotel was welcoming, we had a good room with views of the harbour. Room was comfortable, meals were excellent with good service. The locally brewed Scapa ale was ecellent.

Room Tip: A room overlooking the harbour is just great - recommend Room 2

The stromness hotel has definitively seen better times...
The rooms towards the harbour have a nice view but are very loud - constant noise from the ferry boat all night long. Our room was very big but the furniture is (too) old. The atmosphere in the (big) bathroom is horrible - but all functions (surprisngly) well.
The personel was very friendly. The breakfast was just o.k. - try the omelette for breakfast!

Room Tip: No 18 - no noise from harbour, large room

First view of hotel great location nice views to the harbour and very central. Stepped into hotel entrance very dated and grubby looking. Got to room and its even worse. Bathroom dirty and shabby no shower. Windows kept one with rocks. Food was nice and the staff were friendly

We were due to stay in The Stromness Hotel for two nights but after seeing room we decided against it. The room was scruffy with stained carpet. The chair in room had three big holes with stuffing showing. Did not expect this lack of standard from a 3star hotel. On the plus side staff were all very helpful and friendly.

We stayed in this hotel for four nights while visiting family in Orkney. Had been to the bar for a drink before but never stayed in the hotel as we usually to go self catering in Orkney however we thoroughly enjoyed our stay. We had planned to eat in different Stromness restaurants during our stay but ended up eating in the hotel every night and thought the food was great. Never managed a pudding though! Staff were all very friendly and helpful and we will certainly go back.

We stayed here as a base for an organised walking/sightseeing holiday. It is well situated for this, being only a few yards from the mainland ferry, Hoy passenger ferry and bus stops. The hotel is over a hundred years old and occasionally shows it, but all the important things seem to have been updated. Our room was spacious and clean. The ensuite was shower only but it was possible to use a bathroom just down the landing if nothing less than a bath would do.
Food throughout the week was excellent and varied. Breakfast was particularly good - scrumptious creamy porridge! The mostly young staff were friendly, helpful and efficient. The hotel was part of a holiday package, so I can't comment on value for money.

Room Tip: Only the rooms on the front of the hotel have harbour views.

The hub for the busy folk festival. Food is consistently good, with a good choice and price range.
Staff are always pleasant and helpful.
Well situated in the centre of Stromness with ample car parking at rear.
Beds are comfortable, and the staff cope well, even with the extra pressure of a huge influx with the festival each year.
