Don't be fooled by the romantic look of the hotel or their website! We were very unhappy with our 1-night stay at the Stromness Hotel. Upon arriving at our room, I found silverfish crawling in my sheets and the state of the room was quite old and overdue for a renovation. The room was not very clean, the linens had holes in them, and who knows what other kinds of critters were milling about.

Stromness is a beautiful village, and the Stromness Hotel is a great place to stay. It's centrally located within sight of the ferry terminal and the bus stop. It features three different pubs, including a whisky heritage bar with a great selection of malts. The rooms are cozy, well maintained, and give the guest the impression of staying in a sort of frontier hotel in the Scottish periphery during a bygone era - and I say that in the most positive way possible. The building also has a fascinating history, and is decorated with gorgeous photos of Orkney throughout its halls. All of the food is well prepared, and the staff are extremely friendly. I would definitely stay at the Stromness Hotel again.

Our first introduction to the Stromness was not good, pouring rain, road at the front closed for roadworks, nowhere to park.

We just dumped the car and went in, strangely the reception is on the first floor but the guy behind the counter was friendly and they had got the booking right. He showed me where the car park was and directed us to our room. Unfortunately the room was freezing cold but having sought instructions from reception the heating warmed up and the judicious application of cardboard to the sliding sash windows stopped the draughts and the knocking. Car moved to car park and everything looked a bit brighter.

The room was clean and tidy but slightly care worn, I would not have been as happy at full price but OK on the deal we were on. The bathroom likewise tired but clean and functional, the shower however was erratic and went from hot to cold unpredictably but OK after you learnt how to fly it.

We thought one of the light bulbs din't work but actually there were two switches along way apart and after telling recption two people came up separtely to check it was alright.

The bed was really comfortable and the view of the harbour and over Scapa Flow was beautiful when the rain and mist eventually cleared. Every boby we met on the islands said don't go there expecting less than gales and rain and you will not be disappointed, I have to say it was a lot better than that. The room was slightly noisy due to the ferry moored in the port running it's generators all night, why?

Breakfast was in a back ball room and very competent, there seems to be a marmalade shortage in west Orkney though. The poached eggs and porridge were great, not together. Dinner in the lively restaurant was equally good, brilliant fish and chips, curried tofu good, tomato and basil soup very good, seafood medley brilliant you get the idea. The wine list was good chilen chardonnay at very sensible price. Lively bar! Rather irritatiing was that we were given the wrong menus and so did not realise that there was a surcharge on some items if you were on dinner bed and breakfast, silly but I have to say the uplift was worth it..

The waitresses and waiters were really helpful and worked hard to make it an enjoyable experience and I would give them a big thumbs up so many places have a "couldn't give a damn" attitude. There is a clue in the name "service industry" if you don't want to serve don't expect things to go well!

We checked out and the man was helpful and very good about the uplift query, we were happy to pay as they tried hard and the food was very good. I think the waiter said there were two Indians and a Hungarian in the kitchen hence the exotic overtones to the menu. Well done.

Was staying on Orkney and came here for dinner one night hoping to have a view while enjoying some of the local cuisine. The hotel is the real deal, charming, while old yet not trying to hide this. The food was great and the service, both for drinks and food was friendly and efficient. Was lovely to enjoy a meal and a drink while soaking up the local scenery and historical ambience. The prices were fairly reasonable and what one might expect to pay in this location.

We had a problem with the ferry, change our port of departure to Stromness. Called in and required four rooms. There were not four rooms available, but after a bit of juggling, managed to accommodate us. The atmosphere was very warm and accommodating, and we were treated to a Dutch quire, who spontaneous sang a couple of songs. Lovely meal in the restaurant, and early start for the 6 o'clock ferry directly opposite the Hotel. Although I managed to leave my mobile phone in the room, it was home before me. Now that what I call service.

The Stromness Hotel is a funny old place. Looks good from outside with a grand facade. Inside certainly faded if you are being positive then quirky. Staff were great, and whilst the huge room and bathroom lacked any personality I was impressed that the huge bath would fill in only a minute or two. The bed was pretty grotty whilst the sheets were clean I would guess they were as old as me! Breakfast was fine and nicely served (not great coffee, but could not find any in Stromness) the Flattie Bar was welcoming and had good local beer. The whiskey bar was very comfortable and a smashing array on offer. So OK and certainly no great choice of other hotels available which perhaps explains the price - Double room £112 and Single £66 seemed high for what it was.

Hotel is very close to the ferry at Stromness. Hotel was welcoming, we had a good room with views of the harbour. Room was comfortable, meals were excellent with good service. The locally brewed Scapa ale was ecellent.

Room Tip: A room overlooking the harbour is just great - recommend Room 2
