I last stayed here 13 years ago. For the time it was good.
November 2013 and it is still good. For a hotel that is over 100 years old you cannot expect to find purpose built rooms with en-suite facilities. What you will find are well converted rooms that have adapted Victorian accommodation to modern day standards.
The bedrooms are pleasantly decorated and furnished (but with rather small TVs). The bathroom/shower room (or at least ours) may be a little on the small side and the decoration is drab, but it is clean.
You will only get a decent view if you are on the front of the hotel, but there are few of these. Otherwise the views are not unpleasant - you will not be left looking into a light-well and will see some bits of Stromness.
Food - it was okay (13 years ago it was great) and prices are reasonable. Not a bad wine list.
Service - can't fault it. The staff were extremely helpful and very friendly.
Try the lift (unless you are claustrophobic). It is an experience in itself.
