This tremendous bike rental facility is perfectly placed for enjoying a cycle to the fantastic World Heritage site of Skara Brae. For me personally, it was the great satisfaction of a 12-itch that began in 2004, when I was escorting both our children to the far North of Great Britain; we had travelled as far as a hostel in John O' Groats and stopped. At that time, I wished we had continued onto a ferryboat to the Orkney Islands, specifically to skip Stonehenge and visit Skara Brae [which had been recommended by local Ralph whilst aboard the Swift(less) Ferryboat from Dublin to Holyhead 8 weeks prior].
Anyway, 12 years after that dissatisfying segment of an otherwise outstanding odyssey, great satisfaction was finally achieved. I had made on-line contact with owner/operator John, and, following superb directions from Ferry Inn Karen, we met him, kitted up and pedaled the provided routemap to a stunning Skara Brae.
The laid-back nature of John reflected the calmness and caring prevalent of the locals. We trundled the uprights up a short flight of steps to the smoothly-cobbled, narrow road and easily cruised downhill, careful to keep our vehicles to the left-hand side, opposite of the right-hand priority we know so well back home in the USA.
But making the transition is easy, especially when ALL the roadusers here in the near-idyllic island are so very careful, especially upon tiny roads that have neither shoulder nor sidewalk.
It was a delightful day, with little rain as we had imported our Chihuahuan Sun from home; in fact, it was the highlight of our 2-week holiday for me. I am definitely returning with my Doublevision in the future, and finishing up my exploration of the pre-Stonehenge sites. Definitely, Stromness/John/Orkney Cycle Hires gets my "Wheel of Approval!"

We have rented the bikes to cycle around on Orkney's mainland for a day and visit the prehistoric sites and the Orkney Brewery. The bikes are of good quality and comfortable. The bikes were delivered to our hotel on request (small fee).

Thanks to John Heddle we had a wonderful experience in Orkney with the limited time of a cruise day stop.
We had arranged before by email that he would come to fetch us at Hastson pier with the appropriate bikes for us, according to size and gender, and he drove us to a lonely road near the cliffs of Yesnaby.
We had all the time to walk, admire the scenery and take pictures, and then ride back smoothly to Stromness.
We had done before a similar route from Stromness to Skara Brae and Yesnaby by quiet roads.
Too bad in some stretches of road near Stromness some drivers speed too much and pass too close to bikes.

Good quality bikes for rent at £10 a day.

A very convenient service - especially if you want to take a bike over to one of the southern ferries from Stromness.

Booking ahead by phone or e-mail is advised as this is a small scale operation.

John is very helpful and is happy for you to just drop the bike off when you have finished with it - He advertises his service as not having a curfew !

Yes, this is a family thing run out of a back garden, but brilliant for all that. They have lots of bikes (although they do say that on busy summer days it may be wise to reserve in advance), all of which are in pretty good condition - some mountain bikes, some hybrid tourers. Rates are very good - currently from £10 per day, though if you go later in the day you may find they offer a knock-down price for the evening. Bikes can be returned whenever you're finished with them, as they have no curfew, which is particularly helpful in high summer when the sun's still up until 10.30pm. No locks are supplied with the bikes but apparently this isn't a problem unless you plan to leave them unattended in Kirkwall…

Highly recommended if a) you're in Stromness without a car and want to get out to see all the sites at Stenness etc without hassling with buses, or b) you want to take the passenger ferry across to Hoy and explore by bike.
