Found this on our 4th visit to Orkney whilst checking newly-discovered Banks Tomb of the Otters, uncovered extending the car park!
The site is stunning with fulmers, gulls, skuas, etc wheeling around the cliff top restaurant. The food is equal to the location, with a selection of mostly seafood cooked to perfection. I had chowder and a main course of queenies (scallops) and my wife had Orkney beef lasagne. Both house wines were fine and the two waitresses and two chefs efficient and friendly.
Thanks we'll be back.

Why?

We only discovered this jewel on our last night in Orkney!

The location and views were magnificent - reminded me of South Africa.
The glass restaurant perched on the cliff tops overlooking the sea - amazing.
At last we found excellent, no nonsense, fresh fish produce cooked to perfection - wow.

The service was extremely friendly - Hamish and his wife were delightful.
And nice to know there is an establishment in Orkney with delicious, mouth watering food & wines - thank you for the recommendations.

Excellent value for money & will return to orkney if only to eat and stay in this amazing place.

In all our years of professional international aviation experiences - this was memorable.

My husband and I both chose the seafood platter which was delicious. Both the hot and cold smoked salmon are done in house. I would heartily recommend this as a place to have a wonderful meal as the staff are very friendly and welcoming and the views from the new building are stunning.

Visited late afternoon having phoned the previous day to make an evening reservation only to be told they close at 5.00pm. Not through any assistance from the restaurant personnel but we later found out it was only closed on a Tuesday evening. Misinformation to say the least.

Given we thought the place closed every day at 5.00pm and the fact we wanted to eat as late in the afternoonas possible, we arrived at about 3.45pm and were the only ones in the place. Our greeting was luke warm to say the least.

We ordered the cold seafood plater for starters which was very nice. For mains we ordered line caught halibut with potatoes and vegetables. The fish was lovely, the veg was well over cooked to the point that some of it was soggy. The wine was fine.

One more couple arrived but the atmosphere remained as if we were intruding and they wanted to go home. Other potential customers arrived at 4.30pm only to be told they were closed and this is typically a decent drive for customers.

The service was cold throughout with no exchange of conversation up until we went to the counter to pay the bill. It felt like they were thinking "thank goodness they are leaving". We were afforded some conversation at this point but it was too late.

Although the location is superb and the building itself very nice, the atmosphere, service and veg were distinctly lacking. Not the best of Orkney to say the least. Would not bother to make the trip again.

You are correct we are closed on Tuesday evening. So open every day 11:00 to 17:00 and 18:00 onwards Wednesday through to Monday. I'm sorry you were confused about our opening times. However, you had come in the previous week and collected our business card which details when we are open. Yes, it was a quiet and you are correct that there was only one other couple dining, who had come into the bistro quite a lot later. The waitress, therefore, who is very friendly gave you and the other couple superb customer service. Next time you are in Orkney on holiday, give us another chance to engage in some conversation over a coffee. '

I don't usually take photos of food before I eat it but this really was something special. We pre-ordered lobster meals for £20 each as my husband and I haven't had a lobster in many, many years. A very special treat which we thoroughly enjoyed. This is definitely our favorite restaurant on the island. We recommend it to everyone who stays at our B & B and self-catering chalets. Well done to Hamish and Carole and their staff for making our dining experience a very special one! Can't wait to go back!
