“Wonderful honeymoon destination!”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed 2 September 2013

We discovered Roeberry House on tripadvisor, and were looking for somewhere special for our mini honeymoon in Orkney. We found it! We live in New York, and contacted Dagmar by email. She responded immediately and right from the word go was helpful and courteous. As others have said on this site, Dagmar really does welcome her guests into her home and family, and goes out of her way to accommodate needs. She kindly picked us up from the St Margaret's Hope ferry, and even took us to Kirkwall the next day to pick up our hire car. She made sure we had an absolutely beautiful en suite room with a king size bed and stunning views over Scapa Flow. She even left us a congratulatory wedding gift for us in our room! The house is beautiful, and it is very nice to have use of various different public rooms. The view from the conservatory is stunning. There is a billiard table, and we had fun playing a game. We thoroughly enjoyed the full Scottish breakfasts, and Dagmar is incredbily flexible about when she serves them. We were quite tired after our wedding celebrations, and Roeberry House was an ideal relaxing place to have our honeymoon. We would recommend Roeberry House to any honeymooning couples! Dagmar will truly make you feel at home.

I planned a short but very busy trip to Orkney with my 12 year-old daughter; we wanted to see as much of the Island's heritasge and history in four days.
I found Roeberry House via Tripadvisor, and Dagmar replied quickly with recommendations for the trip.
We stayed three nights in a very comfortable twin room. Guests have the use of public rooms on the ground floor that include a large conservatory with magnificant views to the south, and also use of a small kitchen/diner upstairs where we could prepare hot food if we wished.
As we had a very busy itinery, we didn't use these facilities but all looked great.
Breakfast was extensive and cooked to order.
Dagmar is very knowledgeable about the Orkneys and her recommendations on where to visit and where to eat were all successful.
A lovely peaceful house in a fantastic postion....just wish we had more time to enjoy the ambience.

Our ultimate destination in Scotland was Orkney to visit all the neolithic sites. I found Roeberry House at Trip Advisor and all the rave reviews convinced me to email Dagmar. That was the start of what has become a wonderful friendship. She is not just a B and B owner, she opens and shares her home with those people brave enough to venture all the way up to the outer islands. The superlatives don't adequately describe this accommodation. Dagmar leaves no detail to chance. Originally we were only going to spend one night with her on South Ronaldsay, but she convinced me to stay there for our entire stay on Orkney. You can get anywhere on the mainland within 20 minutes because the roads are good. Dagmar arranged for a wonderful guide to take us to all the neolithic sites. Our guide was terrific and took us places we would never have found on our own. So, let's talk about the house. A beautiful, majestic house sitting way up ontop of a hill looking down across the sea...very close to Skappa Flow. If you are a dog lover, you will love this accommodation. Dagmar has the sweetest 3 setters who will show you all around the grounds, including the secret gardens. There are also ducks, chickens, and other wildlife around if you have brought your children. Every morning we were out with the dogs throwing a stone, stick or toy having such a wonderful time. Our room was on the 2nd floor with a wonderful view of the sea. The bed was great, the breakfast was one of our best in Scotland....and getting know Dagmar and her family was the best. I would go back in a hearbeat. Be advised, when they tell you it is windy on Orkney, believe them. Take a good lined windbreaker with a hood. We were there in June and I had a fleece coat on.

Cannot rate Roeberry House or her host Dagmar high enough. Not only does she open her house to you but her heart too. From the first email then meeting to finally our stay and wedding was fun, smooth, stress free and perfect for us. The house was better then the photos and we had the run of the house for our 2 witnesses and ourselves. Dagmar had everything arranged perfectly for ourselves and our guests of which one was in a wheelchair. The rooms where spotless, welcoming with a lovely personal touch. Anything we needed was catered for and beyond. The wedding itself was very personal and Dagmar had our personalities down to a tee, even loved our motorbikes lol. We even had her 3 dogs as stand-in bridesmaids in our photos . Cannot wait to go back again. Stunning house and stunning views.

Roeberry is a beautiful house with spectacular views. There is a little bay 5mins down hte road for beach lovers.
My husband & I were looking for a last minute, short stay in Orkney with our dogs. We found Roeberry House and are thankful there was availability.
Dagmar & I spoke on the phone prior to visiting, to discuss our needs; we had a choice on the dogs sleeping arrangements, a barn or they could sleep in a room with us. There is one of the bedrooms convienently close to the back door, which made entry & exit stressless.
On arrival, Dagmar took us through the hotel public rooms (conservatory, pool room, lounge & library), then around the garden. Dagmar was very thoughful & kind hostesss, we were made to feel we were staying with friends.
The quality of the Roeberry was excellent, very clean & warm; it more than covered our needs and breakfast was outstanding!
We were both awe struck at the stunning location and the kindness of our hostess, we would return to Orkney just to stay at Roeberry again!

Our stay at Roeberry house for two nights was the best ever - room, house, views, gardens, dog friendly, sandy beach, and most of all a charming host. Their three Springer Spaniels were impressively behaved and made our Cocker Spaniel most welcome.

Room Tip: We had the ground floor and was ideal with a dog.

My wife, Bryony, and I got married at Roeberry House at the beginning of June 2012. We knew we wanted a relatively small wedding (around 17 guests), but we were clueless when it came to precise details of the day. The Humanist celebrant, who also owns and runs Roeberry House, Dagmar Sitte, turned out to have a great combination of wedding knowledge and a flair for creativity. We would have been lost without her and some of her ideas helped us create what was absolutely the best day of our lives.

When we visited Roeberry House prior to the big day (we were in contact via phone and email, and visited twice before the wedding), two things struck us: Dagmar likes to understate how lovely the venue is (one of us commented on how the photos on the website don’t do it justice and she explained that she preferred it that way so that people are pleasantly surprised when they arrive).

The other thing we felt was how exclusive (in a positive way!) the whole process is with Dagmar. You get the feeling that she loves to make the ideal wedding and part of that is choosing the right people to marry! I’ve been to many weddings where the staff and matrimonial officials seem so wedding-jaded: they’ve seen countless ceremonies and incalculable receptions so each ‘happy couple’ becomes almost faceless and the workers are desensitised to what is actually the biggest day in some peoples’ lives. With Dagmar at Roeberry House, she wants to know WHO she might be marrying and if you are right for her and the house, she’ll do everything she can to deliver something personal and truly perfect.

“Perfect!”, That was the most common word that my wife used when visiting Dagmar and then, happily, on the wedding day itself. I have to say that perfect is completely apt. I am not exaggerating when I say that Dagmar goes well, well beyond the call of duty, adding lots of special little surprise touches. These are wonderful, but I don’t want to spoil them so you’ll just have to see for yourself.

Dagmar is not only knowledgeable, creative and hard-working. She’s also incredibly generous with her time and living space. We just didn’t feel rushed or pressured at any point throughout the wedding and on into the night. Roeberry House is a family home and although the family stays in different quarters, you really get the feeling that you have the run of the place. It’s so spacious, yet cosy; so grand, yet stylishly decorated. Every single guest was made to feel special and even some of the city slickers amongst the party were blown away by what they saw.

More detail on the house: it’s as beautiful as its location. We had our ceremony in the conservatory, though it would be possible to have it in the garden or down on the gorgeous beach. During the ceremony, the stunning view out across the bay continued to change as sunlight danced in the clouds and shimmered on the sea.

There are different ways that the house can be set up with regards to tables etc. (Dagmar will get it right for your needs!). We found that there was loads of space – some guests went for a post-dinner walk, while others played pool and chess and others kicked back in the library (which later became a mini dance room). For dinner, like everything else, we went with some of Dagmar’s suggestions (she also liaised with local businesses and people on our behalf), so Jolly’s provided delicious local produce in the form of an upmarket-buffet and Soft Pink Flowers from Stromness supplied fresh, exquisite flowers which adorned the perfectly set table as well as the bridal party.

The bedrooms are also brilliant with, as you’d expect, great views and breakfast is a delight, especially the freshly-laid eggs. The choice was vast and extremely healthy.

I can see that this is as much a review of Dagmar as it is a wedding at Roeberry House; however, despite the ideal location, scenery, venue etc. it is Dagmar who makes a Roeberry House wedding perfect. Absolutely perfect.

There's no doubt that Bryony and I will return to Roeberry House as we can see that, as well as being a wonderful wedding venue, it would also be the ideal retreat for a relaxing, peaceful break.

[ps If Dagmar’s talented and bright young daughter, Jael, asks you to play a game of ‘crack the egg’ on the trampoline, run!]
