Excellent hotel and good service. Unpretentious and unobstrusive.....
def. a home from home. The entire hotel felt like an extension of my home and space. Good service and food. Will definately go back for more of their TLC.

Having passed this hotel many times I wanted to try it, but it turned out to be a huge disappointment. It is the first time in many many years of travelling and hotel stays that I have put back a meal, which was really awful, cold and burnt black. The replacement was no better just burned meat, boiled potaoes and peas and the dessert was a joke! Wee bits of green cooking apple with the skin on and a few sultanas thrown on top and covered in powdered cinnamon, this lovely concoction described itself as a tart - which was missing. There were only a few diners on a Saturday night, the service was slow, dull and we left as soon as possible, very hungry.
The rooms were probably very nice when they were done up, but the wallpaper borders/swags'n'tails look is dated now, classic Country House looks never date. One room was tiny, the other cold and the en-suite was novel with no door handle on the inside of a stiff folding door that would'nt shut. There were no baths in either room. It felt like this place had been good at one time. The breakfast was poor too, my boiled egg was peeled! lying in a saucer with a fingernail print in it, I just ate the yolk!
The toast never came, no more tea was offered so we went to pay and waited ages and ages for someone to come, then we were charged more than was said in a phone call from the hotel, so I had to be refunded and I was also charged for the unacceptable meal, so all in all very disappointing and we won't be back and I can't really recommend it although like everything some people would probably love it.

We booked this hotel for a romantic break but despite the fabulous appearance it was a bit of a disappointment!

The hotel looks lovely from the outside and is easy to find from the main road - follow the brown tourist signs. However the warm scottish welcome was very sadly lacking.

On check in we asked to book a table for dinner at 8 but were told it would suit them better if it was 7.45 as they were expecting other people then too! At a four star hotel I don't expect to be told to fit in with other people. The attitude of the receptionist (who was also the waitress) was one of complete apathy - everything was a bother and there was certainly no 'serve' in her service!!

The room was laughably small - you had to shuffle along the side of the bed to get in it and there was no dressing table or desk at all. This made getting ready for dinner a bit of a challenge - I don't recommend balancing straightening irons on your knee! My husband asked for a better room but was told nothing was available thought it was very obvious from the cars in the car park and the numbers at dinner that the hotel was far from full. The quality of the furnishings was high and the room was extremely clean it was just such small space that the claustrophobia cancelled out the benefits.

Dinner was a rather slow affair and the service was undoubtably surly. I have never known a hotel to supply bread at dinner without butter or oil to accompany it. When we asked for some we were told that they don't provide it at dinner! However the food was rather good. The mushroom risotto was a little bland but a nice consistancy and well cooked and the soup was pleasant but a little salty. We both ate the beef wellington which I would highly recommend - the beef was beautifully cooked and the honey glazed vegetables complimented is very well. The dessert was disappointing - a chocolate terrine with very little chocolate and none of the berry glaze on the menu! The chef visited all the tables which was a nice touch - he is a charming young man from Greece and has been working at Cairn Lodge only 2 weeks. It's a sad reflection on the hotel that his customer service skills were the best of all staff we encountered.

The bar was completely empty by 10.30 and had no atmosphere to speak of. However this was the breakfast venue the following morning and this was actually the highlight of the stay! Very surprisingly, this was the best hotel breakfast I have eaten! Freshly cooked to order it was of a very high standard and provided us with an excellent start to the day! It was encouraging to end the stay on a high note but the general feeling of being a bother and unbeleivably small room will ensure that we are very unlikely to return regardless of the good deals available.

In a four star hotel I expect a reasonable sized room, a warm welcome, an interest in meeting guests expectations (if not exceeding them) and a good quality meal. Unfortunately Cairn Lodge scored only 1 out of these 4 - what a pity!

This is a fantastic boutique hotel situated just down the road from the Gleneagles Hotel.
There are 10 ensuite bedrooms - all immaculately presented. Some rooms are smaller than others but the decor is as fabulous in each.
The staff are excellent; very friendly and highly professional!
I would never stay anywhere else again - this hotel is a real gem!!!

My wife and stayed for one night having booked through Hotel Connexions and overall the experience was reasonably positive and good value for the £70 DBB.

The room was very small and essentially was the size of a large single. However as it has a double bed there was barely room either side of the bed to stand, and it literally was a case of edging along sideways. We managed to sneak a look into a couple of other rooms which seemed of a similar size but we also saw into one of the bigger rooms that are shown on their website and it did look pretty good. Get what you pay for?

Apart from the size, the room was OK as it was bright and well furnished with a flat screen TV (built in DVD) and the usual tea and coffee etc. The bathroom was a decent size but the shower was pretty pathetic – it would definitely benefit from a pump!

Our rate included dinner which was a la carte and measured up iwell n both presentation and food. Unfortunately the dining room is quite a big space and as it was quite quiet the experience seemed a bit formal however the service was good and the relaxed staff certainly helped the occasion.

Our experience at the bar was mixed. As you would expect it is quite small with not a lot of atmosphere but there’s a large TV in the corner so they’ve pretty much made the best of the space. It was a little disappointing though not to have any draught beer available and it was slightly uncomfortable having the barman sitting drinking at a table with family/friends but he was pretty good at going back to the bar when we wanted served.

Overall would I go back? If I got a larger room, possibly but rather than take the risk I’d probably try somewhere else.

Our stay at Cairn Lodge was not something we sought. Our tour group started in this town, so we more or less had to stay there. We're glad we were forced into it.

Let me say this--we are not the "cozy B and B, let's get to know the owners and staff" type of persons. American-style anonymity suits us to a T. However, three staff members in this place--Mark the Manager, Frank the Waiter/Houseman, and Sarah the Waitress--endeared themselves to us in a matter of hours. They exhibited genuine concern that we enjoy ourselves and find everything we needed.

The bar area is just a little space between the informal, large dining room and the hallways to upstairs and the lounges, but it felt like a cozy "command central" where one could catch the comings and goings of the visiting golfers (Gleneagles is up the road), the trials of the staff, and the local news. Loved it.

The decor in our room was a bit tired but extremely comfortable. My pillow covers were crisp and my bed was perfect. Everything was clean, clean, clean. I think my grandmother must have been reincarnated there--she was one who washed our wood furniture twice a year and then paste-waxed it to death. The furniture had that same feel--cared for! The radiators had been dusted; the corners of the window sills were spotless.

Our food experience was mixed. Sandwiches and soup at lunch we generally found to be inedible--but then again, we didn't order it; our tour did. Dinner both nights was excellent.

We would return here in a second.
