“Easter break 2014”
Reviewed 4 May 2014 via mobile

Our family had a weekend break at the main Hotel for this years Easter weekend. We had a great time and would recommend this Hotel for holiday.
The facilities, food and staff are on a par with the best. The break was added to by great weather which allowed us to enjoy the outdoor activities from tree top walks to a bit of golf to a couple of games outdoor chess. The outdoor table tennis was made more fun by the wind becoming a third player and making the return shots a bit more difficult (brilliant).
I have only two negatives to speak of and these are a very loud wedding party disco, which kept the kids awake until the early hours of the morning, despite asking reception three times if they could do anything about the volume! I like a party, but when you are the only one in the room dancing, it becomes a bit tedious. The second negative would be the confusing pricing procedure for food (which is very good. BTW).
Overall we had great and will have another holiday here, staying for a longer time to use mor of the facilities.

We were all happy bunnies after reading about your brilliant Easter break, Neil G. It's lovely that you managed to pack so much in. Sorry about the disco disturbance. Please remind us next time and we'll find a quiet room for you. We're delighted to hear you're already planning a return visit.

A great Scottish hotel and well worth the drive. Luxuriously appointed with outdoor activities in abundance. The staff are friendly and very attentive to your needs. Breakfast in bed will not disappoint.

Having just come back from Crieff Hydro for my husband's 50th birthday, i have to say we loved it and really can't wait to we go again. From the reception staff, to the porters, cleaners and restaurant staff they were all very friendly. The spa is lovely and everywhere is clean and it is so relaxing.

Room Tip: All the rooms i have been in are all different but lovely.

We stayed at the McJames lodge. It was at the top of the hill but you can park your car outside the lodge. There were 7 of us. Beautiful furnishings. 3 rooms all en suite. The lounge area was spacious and opened out onto the balcony. The dining area had a large kitchen area with a large dining table. Could not fault it. We walked into Crieff which is only 10 mins away. I would definately recommend staying here.

It's lovely to hear that McJames Lodge came up trumps for you, Jinty07. The setting is simply breath-taking and, by the sounds of it, set the scene for a terrific break. Thanks for your recommendation and we hope to welcome you all back soon.

Excellent hotel with fantastic facilities indoor and out. We had a 'special rate' two night midweek stay with dinner and breakfast which was worth every penny and more. Spa facilities are excellent, but a word if advice, pre- book if you want any treatments appointments fill up very quickly.

I booked a Signature Room for my Boyfriends 29th Birthday on 26/04/14. We arrived at the Hotel to masses of wedding guests getting their photos taken at the front of the hotel - not ideal when you want to check in. We were greeted by a lovey receptionist who informed us that we had a parking space reserved with our room. When we arrived the parking space was being used so we had to go back to Reception to explain this - they didn't seem that surprised and let us use another space which was good but a bit annoying at the same time!! Bollards might stop this happening again!!

The room was lovely, huge with a big bath - the only thing was there was a wedding party staying in the same block (Leigh block) as us so the nose was horrendous! So much for a relaxing break!!! The only complaint is that there was some brown splashes on the bathroom door frame - so obviously not been cleaned in a while!

We went down to dinner at 8pm and were told to have a seat in the Lounge to peruse the menu and we would be collected to be taken to our table. We ordered two Mojitos (which were like no Mojitos I have ever seen before - basically rum, lime cordial with a bit of mint and no ice - truly awful!!!) We waited with Menus for 45 minutes before we decided to go back up and ask if we could have our table - the Manager? had no recollection of us and asked why we were late for our table! (Pretty obvious we had been forgotten about)

Dinner was nice except the Portions were small (Maybe as it was late the food was running low). My boyfriend ordered a Rum with ice to drink - no ice arrived then he had to wait 15 mins for the ice to be brought over. We ordered Cheese and Biscuits for dessert and were presented with the Cheese Menu, which we were very impressed about. We selected our 3 cheeses (all different so we could try each others). However, the cheese arrived and they were all the same - by this point it was after 10pm and I couldn't be bothered with complaining - there didn't seem to be Management or Supervisors around anyway!

Our nights sleep was the worst we have had at any hotel we have stayed at - there were wedding guests screaming and shouting outside our room. They also had a very small dog that barked all night. There was also someone repeatedly tooting a car horn at 2.30am - I understand that weddings are a celebration but more care needs to be given to the majority of guests that were not attending the wedding. I wish we had known a wedding was on before I booked as we would have asked to be in a room away from such noise.

Breakfast was nice - a wide variety of food and prompt service. However the Chef's looked miserable and if you asked for a fried egg they didn't give you a response - just went to the Kitchen and got it for you. Also the Staff looked shattered - probably as many of them were serving dinner the night before.

A horrendous stay which should have been a very happy time for us as a couple. I can never get back my partners 29th Birthday!!!

Room Tip: Signature Rooms are located in the Leigh Block - Gorgeous Rooms but not worth the cost.

Oh my goodness, Claire160889 we've never heard of so many things going wrong during a single stay. Sorry. Sadly we can't always legislate for the inconsiderate actions of other residents, but can assure you that function guests are not given priority. Hope you'll give us another chance to impress someday.

Having stayed at Crieff Hydro several times over the years, heading out for a family "birthday bonanza" (as it was put) gave me the opportunity to test out the final facets of a vast hotel. Situated in rolling Perthshire, a stone's throw from fierce golf country this delightful hotel sits neatly near most of the highlights of the east of Scotland's central belt. I have now had the pleasure of staying in the hotel itself, its small apartments, and the "lodges" further away from the site.

One piece of advice; if it's adventure sports, golf and piece and/or quiet you're after - stay in the lodges. They are nearly a honest mile from the hotel site, but right next to the adventure activity center and golf course/bar. Self catering is a must but you are away from the more family orientated hustle of the main hotel. It is a fair hike to the hotel itself, or a mile long drive over viscous speed-bumps uphill - you'll be better staying put. There is a shuttle to and fro, but outside peak season it needs to be booked and runs fairly infrequently.

The lodges themselves are spacious, and the 3 bedroom "Jamieson" lodge we stayed in was semi-detached, but still quiet and offered fantastic views of the countryside. Like many lodge properties, it contains everything you'd need including (but not restricted to): washing and drying facilities, towels, all standard kitchen ware, and a TV with a DVD player. Barbecues are permitted but only disposable, and only on the provided stands.

The hotel building itself retains many of the charming Victorian features, but has clearly been updated bit by bit making the decor very chic outside and inside. Unfortunately this modern addition lays down an inherent labyrinth of finding your way round. Maps are provided, but we became disorientated more than once in the "bowels" of the hotel. Staff are very helpful though, feel free to ask.

The facilities are numerous as they are high quality. The kids facilities in "the hub" including the "Big Country" for younger audiences and video-games and sports for the teens, were raved about by families (including my own) who used them. A nice touch is there is a glass-house style bar right next to them, should the impetus to "watch the kids" while the football is on take you suddenly.

The activities are good value for money, and wide ranging from high wire hilarity to tearing around the site on souped up Segways. Often they can seem very brief and leave you wanting more, which is probably a reflection on both the quality and the brevity. The archery I can recommend, as it almost acts to "teach" you good archery, making you want to try it again almost immediately! (My father in-law still brags over his miraculous talents, particularly where his daughter is concerned). I'm afraid I cannot comment on the golf facilities, but I am reliably informed the green fees are good compared to most.

We also went fly-fishing with a company recommended, but not run, by the hotel. This was a nice effort considering they are unlikely to take commission. Just further evidence of ethical running of the hotel to promote local business.

The Spa facilities were good, if rather basic. The "Victorian Spa" was a rather hackney attempt to paint walls of a small basement pool to look Victorian, which considering the property was built in the Victorian era is rather perplexing. Nevertheless, at only £10 and being right next to the kids pool it was still a pleasant and quieting experience away from the Hubbub of the hotel itself. The treatments were enjoyed by the female members of our party, who all looked like melting chocolate afterwards - obviously a good endorsement for the hot-stone massage.

Regarding the restaurants, a note for the wise; the brasserie boats some real quality food, and is a little cheaper, more informal and family friendly earlier in the evening than it's counterparts. The Meikle restaurant (where the bountiful breakfast buffet is served) was very much a more formal affair, worth booking for a special evening. The quality of the food is about right for the starring of the hotel, but rather disappointingly the Brasserie was far better in my opinion for its quality, service and atmosphere - a reverse of what you would expect for the way each is sold.

Overall it is a great hotel for families and big groups who plan to stay put and enjoy the delights on offer. The attention to detail in some areas is a little lacking, but simply act as fodder for critics like myself.

As a trip (even including the post-party hangovers), it has little equal this side of the Forth. DW

Room Tip: The lodges suit the adventure/golfing types or big groups who plan to self-cater. The apartments wo...
