5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed 4 August 2014

Very comfortable room, excellent food, wonderful view, great walking both from the door and nearby, we loved staying here.
Loch Katrine boat and walk is a lovely day out, Ben Vorlich should be compulsory for any walker, a walk through Glen Tarken from the hotel is well worth it. didn't play but the local golf course was lovely and very friendly.

Thanks for your generous review.

I'm pleased you go the chance to take in some of the local walks: they really are glorious, and surprisingly remote considering you start at the hotel and don't need to drive.

We had a wonderful room, comfortable bed and a view to die for...booked in for a visit to the Lochearnhead Highland Games and arrived mid afternoon to the hotel, warm welcome and a great service especially when arranging the meals which were split from the two menus available (evening and set) the food was for me first rate with an imaginary flair for flavour with good twists on good local produce, my wife however isn't as brave as me where food is concerned and she struggled to find and indeed enjoy the choices she had, that said, this is more to do with her palate then a fault of the menu or chef, all the food was cooked appropriately and as said, the flavours were great, my only down side is that i have a ferocious appetite and was disappointed with the portion sizes, some sides of potatoes or seasonal veg (other than what is served on the plate) would have been most welcome......in reflection, i would willingly stay here again but would make sure i had some Scooby snacks with me, our stay was a chill night but if you're more of the athletic type bulk up on whatever you can get hold of or leave the dining room un-fulfilled

Room Tip: we had room 3 which was supercalifragilisticexpecalidocious

Thanks for your review, and I'm glad you enjoyed your stay.

Portion sizes are of course very much a matter of individual taste, and as you yourself say you have a ferocious appetite, but I am a little surprised you ate only two courses off our four course menu if you still felt hungry. All the mains on our four course menu come with a potato dish and either two or three seasonal vegetables, and are served on plates that are too large to fit upright in our commercial dishwasher, so they are not tiny portions.

If you are the more athletic type trying to bulk up on whatever you can get hold of, the a venison burger and chips off our bar menu is probably a better bet that the “fine dining” four course menu, which is designed to excite the senses and taste buds with a combination of flavours, texture and colours, rather than just bulk you up.

Has to be one of the most beautiful locations in Scotland. Highlight was sitting on the decking in the evening sun, drinking wine and watching an osprey swooping down to the water for fish. We also enjoyed a lovely walk around part of Loch Earn (info on walks in info folder in room) My husband enjoys photography and we took some beautiful sunset shots from the small pier in front of the hotel. Owners friendly and welcoming-kindly upgraded us to a loch view-room was superb and bed comfiest ever! Great breakfast with again fantastic views out on to Loch Earn. Will definitely return and next time try out some of the delicious sounding dinner menu!

We really enjoyed the location and the porridge. Loch Earn is very picturesque and the highlight was the osprey fishing during our dinner. Some of the food was good some not to our taste. Nice room with a very good view.

Thanks for your review. I'm sorry some of the food was not to your taste, but we do try to offer more adventurous food than typically found in a small rural hotel, so thanks at least for trying it.

We enjoyed a lovely four-night break at this hotel, which is set in a stunning peaceful location on Loch Earn. Our room was spacious and comfortable with a lovely big comfy bed. It also had a great view over the loch. The owners Alan and Jane were very welcoming, friendly and helpful and they worked so hard, with little or no additional help (or so it appeared). The pretty village of St Fillans is an ideal spot from which to explore the area whether on foot or by car. We toured around the Loch Lomond area, went on the Steam Ship on Loch Katrine, visited the Famous Grouse distillery in Crieff and generally took in all the wonderful views at every turn! On our last night we had dinner in the hotel and the food was excellent - everything we ate was absolutely delicious, imaginative cooking and all beautifully presented. The breakfasts were also good - the home smoked salmon and scrambled eggs are a hi-light. At the risk of (or in the hope of!) receiving a caustic response I am going to mention my pet hate of pre-packed butter, sugar and jams etc at breakfast. How nice it would have been to have perhaps had a couple of local jams/marmalade and a pot of butter. However, this did nothing to spoil our enjoyment of the time we spent in St Fillans and we would definitely recommend the hotel.

Thanks for your kind review: I am glad you enjoyed the hotel, food and the area.

I'm afraid I will have to disappoint you on a caustic response to your comments on the pre packaged butter and jams, but I will explain why we do it. One of the differences between home cooking and a commercial kitchen is our requirement to comply with Environmental Health regulations and we along with all catering establishments have regular unannounced visits from their inspectors to check compliance. (We have to document compliance weekly with 67 specific rules, and document the temperature in all our fridges twice a day.) If we put out non pre packaged jams and butter at breakfast, everything that has been put out and not used then has to be thrown out. We don't want this wastage, or the costs it brings, which would need to be passed on to our customers as higher prices. Now I know other places do not follow the rules as they should, but we do, even if we think some of them are excessive. We have tried to get local pre packaged jams (the pre packaged butter is Scottish), but so far we haven't found any.

Sorry the reply isn't more pithy, but it's hard to be light hearted about regulation in small businesses.

Alan Gibson

Stayed here for a family get together and pleased to say that the hotel really was excellent.

A warm welcome from the owners, clean, well equipped room and great breakfasts.

My wife and I both agreed that the evening meal on Saturday night was one of the best we have eaten.

Would definitely come back.

My wife and I hired the one bedroom Ancala Lodge which is attached to the Achray House Hotel for a one week stay in beautiful St Fillans. We used the lodge as a base to tour the southwest coast and central highlands areas. It proved to be an ideal base within reasonable driving distance of many scenic areas such as Inverrary, Oban, Inverlocharig, Fort William, Glencoe, Killin, Pitlochry, Aberfeldy, Stirling and Crieff. The drive back from Glencoe to St Fillans was particularly special with snow capped peaks adding to the spectacular scenery at every turn.

The lodge itself was clean and comfortable with adequate facilities for the two of us, with a fantastic view facing Loch Earn. Service generally was excellent. We reported a minor problem with the electronic shower which was repaired by the time we returned to the lodge that afternoon. We also reported an ill-functioning TV which was promptly replaced with a brand new flat-screen model!

We did not use the hotel facilities much as our brief stay in Scotland was pretty hectic with all the touring we did as well as touching bases with relatives in the Crieff and Stirling areas. We did however partake of their bar menu on a couple of occasions and found the food, especially the chicken and leek pie, to be well prepared and of good value.

Owners Alan and Jane Gibson proved to be excellent, knowledgeable hosts who are obviously proud of of their hotel and of the beautiful part of Scotland in which they ply their trade.

Recommended.

Room Tip: We did not stay in the hotel. We rented one of the attached self-catering lodges which we found to...

Thanks for your kind review of your few days in one of our lodges. You were luck to have both good weather, and views of the last of the winter snow on the peaks.

I trust your trip back home was uneventful.
