“nice upgraded stay”
Reviewed 3 February 2014

mar hall had cancelled our original booking due to a broken boiler but upgraded us to a junior suite for 2 weeks later

on arrival--- no junior suite, but we were given 2 rooms with adjoining doors and the rooms were lovely and we had champagne on ice and chocolates for our occasion we were more than happy with the upgrade

dinner-- as we were on the groupon deal you normally have the limited menu, BUT much to our surprise the nice waiter informed us due to the inconvenience of our booking being cancelled;
we now had an upgrade on the menu as well ,

we had a spa day with treatments and relaxed at night in the piano room
and breakfast in the morning and then as they have late check out we again relaxed in the hall with tea and just chilled until our time was up lol
well done MAR HALL for making up for the cancelation in more ways than one, we were more than happy with the way you made up for it
its our 4th visit to the hall and spa and we always have a nice chilled time thank you ... from liz and janet allison

Had an overnight stay in a junior suite. Rooms were huge and although a little shabby in places (mainly the carpet showing its age) were very clean and comfortable. The bathroom in particular was lovely and very relaxing with lovely lighting and a roll top bath. The food at dinner was very good but it was the quality of the breakfast that we were most impressed with. Didn't use spa facility so can't comment on that. Staff were friendly also very helpful and welcoming. Would definitely recommend this place and hope to go back again soon.

Really nice hotel in great location (although your satnav may not take you to the entrance which seems to have changed). Very professional, friendly staff. Didn't try the restaurant but room service was excellent.

Thank you for your kind review and are glad you enjoyed your stay. We hope to welcome you back again soon. Next time you visit if you enter the postcode PA7 5PP (rather than our actual postcode PA7 5NW) into your sat nav then you will hopefully be directed to the entrance of our driveway... the one downside of being in a country location!

Kind regards,

My wife and I were given a group on deal and I can not state enough how the staff mafe us feel like third class citizens. Lets start from the beginning. . We were supposedly given a room upgrade which we paid for.. The handle on the bath room door came of in my hand the minute I went to go into the toilet. The bath had a prepetual loud dripping. The room was freezing. So after leaving the room we decided to go for a drink at the bar. I aproached the bar to order drinks and was told 'to go take a seat and some one will be with you' 20 mins past before any one came. Then came dinner...

The staff member came to take us to our table slapped two menus down with 3 options a pasta a fish and a pork chop. Or the option to pay extra for a chateau briand (possibly the wrong spelling). So we took that option. The waiter walkex right past us with our chateau briand and took it to another table carved it only to be told that he was at the wrong table. So he just brought it over and started putting it on our plates. Terrible. Then thee was the sides. Over cooked over boiled. Awfull.

All in all a terrible experiance.. For a supposed 5 star luxury hotel. I would never set foot in it again. I have complained to them but heard nothing back. Typical!!

Stayed overnight on the 21st January after my hubby very nicely booked dinner and a stay for my birthday on the 22nd. Simply amazing! We got a free upgrade and a bottle of wine in our room! Dinner was gorgeous and the drinks after were also fab! Best French Martini ever! As always the staff treated us as royalty and made us feel so special! Never fails to disappoint when we walk in and see our wedding video on loop!! Can't wait to go back again...I just need to think of a reason to go back before our anniversary! Well done to all the staff and it was a very nice touch to get a thank you email from the Hotel Manager for our kind words on our comment card. Keep up all the hard work guys it is really paying off!! Until the next time.....

We have been guests at Marr Hall on two occasions. The first was a wedding, which was perfect. Based on our experience as wedding guests we would recommend Marr Hall. The marquee is big, has a bar, nice integral washrooms and a funky dance area - not to mention first class views and even its own large balcony. The food we had was very good too! Marr Hall itself makes for a fantastic wedding reception venue - really very good and impressive.

Today we arrived home from our most recent visit to Marr Hall. This time we visited simply to unwind, making use of a promotion via it-is-on. We had a very nice time and the promotion was undoubtedly great value for money. During our stay we paid for a number of spa treatments including an ultimate body massage, facial and scalp.

We had mixed feelings about our accommodation. We were in room 51. The website says that the Edwardian Scottish Mansion has 53 rooms. In reality many of the rooms are outwith the opulence of the mansion itself in a more modern extension. The character of which is quite different with low ceilings in comparison to the grander dimensions of the mansion. The room was decorated to a high standard. The niggles were slight; a damp patch in the corner of the room just underneath the cornice, an enormous television cabinet that did not fit into the room and obscured the bathroom light switch (we had to call a concierge to ask where the light switch was) and a chip out of the top of the wardrobe that was noticeable when lying in the bed. The complimentary coffee was instant granules and the minibar was completely empty. The room was a solid 4 star affair but not what I would consider as being 'luxury' as the hotel states. Also, I did not like the aluminium window frames and question if all the rooms in the annex really are uniquely designed. We felt that the room service charge was bit cheeky being 'per person' and put us off ordering a small snack. The room was very clean.

The Edwardian part of the hotel is impressive, particularly the main hall with comfortable seating, lovely tapestries, stunning views and in a good state of repair. The grounds are in a poor state of repair. For a hotel that boasts being set in 240 acres of woodland there appears little by the way of walks or trails and some of the rhododendrons were expansive. Currently under construction is a small scale housing estate which also detracts. In my opinion the homes are tacky in appearance, do not do justice to the Edwardian mansion and should be far more discrete and of at least some architectural merit.

The spa facilities are good and bad. The relaxation room is very calming and the treatment rooms are in a good state of repair too. The swimming pool is no oasis, it is an offering akin to a local public swimming pool. There is no Jacuzzi and actually my local swimming baths have more features and manages to achieve a better atmosphere and sense of relaxation. The spa staff were extremely nice and managed to make the experience feel more luxurious than the facilities did.

Dinner was good. Our deal included lunch. Since lunch was fully booked the hotel kindly allowed us to transfer £30 towards the dinner menu. Oddly we were given a very limited dinner menu, even though we would have been quite happy to pay the inevitable excess over £30. We only realised when we saw that other guests were given menus with a wider choice. Non-the-less the service was very good and the food of a good standard. Though we left feeling a bit hungry.

We wonder if the hotel is adopting too many promotional offers and this may be causing a bit of minor confusion at times.

Our experience was neither one of Edwardian grandeur (except at dinner and breakfast) or of a luxurious spa getaway. It makes a perfect wedding venue. We had a really nice time, the treatments were good, the staff were friendly and there were no major issues to report.

We left Marr Hall feeling refreshed and contended enough but I feel this is a solid 4 star hotel rather than a luxury 5 star one. This is the perfect wedding venue but without the grandeur of Marr Hall this would be a mediocre hotel for the odd weekend getaway.

Room Tip: Not all rooms are in the Edwardian part of the hotel.

Firstly, thank you for the feedback - I agree our hotel is a brilliant wedding venue and we always strive to make every event very special. We are currently refurbishing many of our bedrooms and being in an historic building each room is unique so there will be some slight differences between one room and another, although we aim to maintain as high a standard as possible at all times.

Kind regards,
