“Beautiful setting, spacious rooms”
Reviewed 1 July 2014

I was here for a hen-do and we had a package deal for a treatment and over-night stay. The staff were very friendly and accommodating in the spa area. The treatments were good, I thoroughly enjoyed my massage. The room we were in (48) was really big with a good view over the golf course and we could see a bit of the Clyde. My only issue would be that the toilets throughout and also our bathroom weren't fantastic; they didn't reflect the quality of the rest of the hotel. The food on the evening was slightly average but our dining room in the main house was magnificent. The breakfast buffet had a very good selection however. Beautiful setting for the hotel and I got lost on a very picturesque run the next morning. Would recommend but perhaps only if you can get a good deal as I think it's pricey for what you get.

This is by far the nicest hotel we've ever stayed in. The staff where friendly, helpful and attentive without being intrusive. We stayed in a junior suite with a beautiful four poster bed. The view across the Clyde towards the Kilpatrick hills was lovely . Despite there being weddings and parties on there was no noise . Breakfast was of a standard you'd expect. We used the spa on the morning before checking out and found it to be very relaxing and therapeutic. Can't wait to return

I spent two nights at Mar Hall Hotel for a wedding and I was a little surprised. From outside, the hotel looks very dark (the stone has turned to black) and would need a little cleaning (unless that's the local style). The car park is large (in fact there are cars all over the place) and that day, there was no one to carry our suitcases up the nice but long staircase. Room #24, angle ground floor, is dark and gloomy. The window has a split window tile and just under the window, there are smelly pipes (kitchen smell). They could easily be hidden with plants or floor tiles. The bathroom is falling into piece (the tap came apart) and the blind had holes. Our minibar only had two bottles of water, the safe was blocked and the mattress is hollow in the middle. Just to say, I also visited rooms 5, 10 and 25 which are much much nicer (colours, views etc...) but since there are cars all over the place, you nearly always overlook a parking! Service can also be very very long and coordination would need to be revised. Overall, the hotel seems tired and would need a sever refurbishment to remain a 5 star. Hotel standards have gone up and Mar Hall fell asleep. But we had a great time under the wedding tent which is absolutely fabulous and there, the service was perfect. I would still recommend Mar Hall but only if you can choose the right room (main building, room 10 or next to it).

Room Tip: Main building, garden side (room 10) or river view room 5

I am from Bishopton, living in Edinburgh and home for a birthday party. I have to start by saying I am astonished at the good reviews this hotel has.

At check in it was noticable that numerous staff ignored rubbish lying on the floor as they walked past. Walking to the room it was obvious that the hotel is not adequtely maintained.

We stayed in one of the hotels "deluxe" rooms, number 18.

The hotel :

Decoration is in need of maintenance throughout the hotel
Old leakages are evident on the ceilings
Windows are in dire need of renovations, particularly when seen from the garden side

Garden :

Gardens are lovely and extensive
All external metalwork such as benches and railings are rusting
Stone paths not maintained
Rubbish which was clearly not recent was evident in the plant pots etc

Room 18 in the main building :

Wallpaper badly scarred
Quilt torn
Windows very poor condition
Stain on sofabed looked like blood
Very old fashioned furniture not to our taste
Large room
Comfortable and large double bed
Our sons bed was not made up, nor was there any offer at reception to have this done

Bathroom :

Broken tap
Mould at seal of shower screen
Shower screen wouldnt stay open
Cracked sink

Breakfast :

Standard cook breakfast fare at lower end of quality scale
Appaulingly overcooked scrambled eggs
Cheese that looked as if it had been recycled for days
The bread selection was a couple of shop bought sliced loaves

Swimming Pool :

Good sized swimming pool
Clean changing rooms
Good big towels

This hotel pitches itself as competing with Cameron House and Gleneagles. This is a laughable comparison. Wherer the case or not, the impression is of a business in financial trouble. Make no mistake, this hotel charge absolutely top notch prices and doesn't compare in any way, shape nor form with its preceived competition.

The bars and public rooms are quite attractive and the food at the birthday party was pretty good. Service at dinner was hit and miss. I would say that service is mainly provided by very young staff who give no evidence of formal training but try their best.

There was a wedding and at least two parties being held at the hotel during our stay in the middle of summer, yet we were able to book our choice of room a week before arriving. In retrospect this says a lot about it.

What a place ......from the minute we stepped into this beautiful hotel we could see that it's is definitely worthy of its 5stars. Staff so helpful and friendly especially reception and concierges. I had bought a 5 pm deal for dinner in the ll posto restaurant it was wonderful, and again staff were lovely. We stayed in room 7 definitely the best room I have ever stayed in so luxurious. We later went downstairs to listen to singer Emma on the piano she is amazing and very talented young woman. Had breakfast in our room in the morning again could not fault a thing Amazing hotel in amazing location x

Room Tip: Room 7 for sure

As the title says this was the second time I had visited mar hall to play golf .the hotel and course have a fantastic position being set in beautiful countryside right beside the river .. The course itself was very well presented with two minor gripes . The greens were running a bit slow and the rough in certain parts is just to thick .. ( but these gripes may have just been down to my ability ) !!!!... The service provided by the bar and waiting staff was very good , the bar only sells bottled beers but has a good selection .. The food was also good . The interior of the hotel has a nice feel to it and the spa facilities look good although I didn't use them .. This a good example of where a hotel/ spa and golf course work well.. And is a step up from the nearby gleddoch hotel and golf course ... My wife has even suggested it as a possible venue for whenever our daughter decides to get married ..overall on my visit deserves 5 stars .

Having guests coming from all over the world except Scotland ;0), we picked Mar Hall because of it's proximity to Glasgow and Edinburgh airport and because we lived thousands of miles away, we wanted staff that had of extensive experience in organizing and attending to weddings. Mar hall is a wedding factory. They hold btw 2 and 3 weddings every week so we thought we wouldn't get the sense of being special... But we were wrong!! From the day we arrived, all the staff ran like headless chickens to accommodate our needs and make everything go smoothly. All have been adorable and we must say the concierges and housekeeping team have been total superstars on D day, running up and down the stairs with dresses, bits and pieces, information, messages and fixtures and housekeepers even coming in the morning to fix the room before photographers arrived so it didn't look too messy! Though a packaged wedding factory, Mar Hall managed (with struggle but still) to accommodate for our "continental style" wedding by being very flexible on packages and allowing us to have all those wine tasting sessions and thorough discussions with the chef (thx to Adrian, the F&B manager). Our wedding coordinator, Vikki Bal, has been absolutely perfect on D day and managed to iron out all last minute details with calm and efficiency. The staff serving in the marquee under the supervision of Gordan (in charge of our wedding F&B logistics on our day) have also done a stupendous job, being discreet, caring, efficient and adorable with all our guests regardless of the language barrier. Needless to also mention that Mar Hall as a location is flabbergasting, making it a perfect spot for our photographers (Imagine Images - Ross & Kirsty) and our videographers (White Balloon - Alina & Stewart) - who all could not have been more perfect on our day with discretion, fun and professionalism - to shoot the most amazing pictures we have ever seen (and that's only based on what they shared with us on Facebook since Sunday), for our florist ("Florette the Florist" in Paisley - ask for Sandra) to make the place look like a fairy tale and our Marryoke team (Swift Production with whom we had great fun) to shoot plenty of fun shots with magnificent backgrounds! Now having said that, there are obviously things Mar Hall could do better: if it wasn't for the hours we spent organizing our day and driving each and every single detail, we would've had the package full stop and that would've made quite an impact on the final result. Their wedding planners are very obviously understaffed and we went through a lot of hassle and sometime shouting to get some responsiveness, so if you're not down the road from them, don't expect them to propose things out of the box or even to follow up. You're going to have to keep track of everything and follow up relentlessly. The worst battle we had was to get a final quotation (which we got 3 days before...) though that was (we think at least) mostly due to their initial lack of understanding that the packages they offered simply didn't work for the day we had planned. What Mar Hall really did wrong: with not one guest coming from less than 600miles away, we had asked that they be placed in the main building, or if not possible, over the spa area which give the nicest views on the Clyde or the garden. 6 months before our wedding we had specifically asked that none of our guests be placed in the wing that showed on the parking lot. At that time we were told no promises could be made but our requirement was well noted and since room allocation had not yet been planned for, our in house wedding planner would see to this. Result: a very large majority of our guests ended up in that same wing we asked to avoid, even the groom's father, best man and the bride's sister and bridesmaids!!! That was really very disappointing, especially knowing that amongst the 3 weddings planned last week-end, we were the only ones with 100% of guests that would likely not get a chance to spend another night in Mar Hall unless they flew in! I hope next time they have a couple flying in so many people from all horizons, they'll at least try not to dump them all in the worst rooms of the hotel. So to resume: overall a fabulous day supported by an amazing team but they still have to improve if they want all their weddings to feel 5*!

Room Tip: Ask not to have a room in the wing that faces the parking lot (18 to 40 or so). You'll likely be...
