Beautiful quiet retreat

My husband and I went for a weekend away to Mar Hall. It is currently undergoing renovations and there was plenty evidence of this around the buildings. That did not detract from our stay at all. The staff right throughout our stay were friendly, helpful and polite. The food was delicious and the bedroom was very well appointed and the bed comfortable.
My only other comment is that they don't allow tips to be put on credit cards which means you will need cash to tip the staff if you wish to do so and I for one definitely felt they all did.

An overnight stay at Mar Hall on a Valentine's package. Expensive, yes, but you expect higher prices over 14/15 February, so no surprise there. What Mar Hall did offer was value for money which is what most reasonably-minded hotel guests hope for.
Certainly the "de luxe" room - at least initially - more than lived up to its branding - lots of space, big comfy bed, good temperature control, superb view over the Clyde to the Kilpatrick Hills. Enormous bathroom with "his 'n' hers sinks", deep bath tub and separate shower cubicle.
Dinner menu was a bit limited in choice but the meal was excellent - good portions, well-cooked and quality products. Staff were efficient, cheerful and obliging. Tables well-spaced, allowing for a private conversation. Thoroughly enjoyed breakfast too - such a great choice I will even forgive the absence of fried eggs.
So why four stars and not five?
Well, there were a few niggles which did not detract from the enjoyment of our short stay but may have done had we stayed longer. Several drawers in the bedroom were missing their ring-pulls, making them difficult/impossible to access; the television was a bog-standard 32in screen with limited channel choice - and the way the settings constantly pulled you back to the list of (frankly overpriced) rental films eventually became an irritant; there was no plastic laundry bag to store used clothes. And my anticipated long soak in the deep bath tub never happened because the water was lukewarm - I was in and out within ten minutes.
Hard as I tried, I could not even locate a booklet giving information on hotel facilities and policies nor - and this was most surprising - a brochure relating the history of this huge, mock-Gothic Victorian pile. Perhaps it was marooned in one of those inaccessible drawers.

A friend related me to an overnight stay.we received a very warm welcome, every member of staff without exception could not do enough for you.
The bedroom was large with lovely memory foam toppers on the bed and it was so comfortable, tea coffee facilities were supplied along with nice biscuits and chocolates. The bathroom was also very large with a separate bath and shower. Nice toiletries were also provided.
The facilities in the spa were great.
We had a casual dinner and the food and service were excellent.
I will definitely return.

Room tip: Just go you won’t be disappointed

Location / scenery is beautiful, staff were great and food brilliant but that’s the end of the positives.

Room (45) was in the annexe and corridors etc are so dated / shabby. Hugely disappointed to expect to stay in a ‘deluxe room’ at Mar Hall and be shoved in a pebble dash white Annexe that looks as if it’s on its last legs.

Room was a good size with a nice view of the loch but was roasting, shower didn’t drain, only one tiny shower gel and couldn’t get more when I asked a member of staff. Attention to detail shabby with things like the shelf in the bathroom sloping.

Spa treatment was nice but swimming pool / leisure facilities were a shambles. Only one steam room open which was barely warm and both saunas out of order and have been for some time. No jacuzzi which I would expect in a five star hotel. Steam room was also filthy with the tiles clearly never been properly cleaned.

Food menu in main restaurant was very limited and extortionately priced (valentines special) but we were able to move to bar next door to eat And the food there was fantastic. Breakfast was good, lots of choice but would have been nice for hot food to be ordered from a menu rather than a buffet.

Overall we had a nice night but that’s because we made the most of it and got a taxi to a pub nearby for some drinks / atmosphere. We were very excited to be staying in a five star hotel and instead ended up disappointed that we have stayed in much nicer 3 star places. Won’t be returning. Hopefully the owners invest enough to completely transform it as the best thing about the place is the staff and they deserve to keep their jobs.

Thank you for taking the time to pass on this valuable feedback as without such feedback we will never improve our offering.
As you have noted, we have just come out of administration and about to embark on a multi million pound refurbishment to transform the hotel to restore it to its former glory.

Booked a Grand Suite for one night to celebrate my wife’s birthday. The hotel staff were all very friendly and welcoming. Could not fault the size of the suite however it was in need of refurbishment, the furniture and decor had seen better days. The suite had 2 tvs but were placed in awkward positions which made viewing difficult. The water pressure in the shower was great however the water temperature was look warm at best even with the highest temperature setting selected. We enjoyed a couple of cocktails in the bar area, the server was friendly and attentive. We both had a great sleep, the bed was spacious and comfortable. We didn’t eat dinner here but the breakfast was great. Selection of cereals, pastry’s, fruit and hot food was on offer. Overall we enjoyed our stay however the bedrooms do require a little tlc. I wouldn’t agree that this is a 5 star hotel but definitely a 4.

My wife and I stayed at the wonderful Mar Hall Golf & Spa Resort for 2 nights for my birthday. The hotel is secluded, sitting in the Earl of Mar estate, but very close to Glasgow, Glasgow Airport and the M8 motorway.
It is a favourite hotel of pop stars playing in Glasgow, and also football teams. My wife and I are not celebrities but felt that we were treated as such! The resort definitely deserves its 5* rating (in our experience some, 5* hotels do not always live up to that standard).
Our room (Room 1) was massive with wonderful views of the River Clyde and Kilpatrick Hills. The bathroom was nearly as large as the bedroom and had a lovely deep bath, walk-in-shower, 2 sinks and a chaise longue!
The sumptuous interiors are tastefully decorated in the style of a stately home (it was originally commissioned by the 11th Lord Blantyre and was completed in 1845). However, the hotel has a homely, relaxed ambience as the staff are so friendly and attentive. In fact, all of the staff went out their way to make us feel special.
We have to say that the staff were outstanding and the hotel's greatest strength. We were so well looked after by Dayna, Michael and Abbi in the dining room, Blair in the leisure club, Willie the concierge (and the new chap whose name we sadly have forgotten), Victoria on reception and Robert who carried our luggage for us. Every member of staff we encountered went above and beyond.
The food and service in Cristal Restaurant was top notch. There was an imaginative menu featuring local produce, and an extensive wine list.
The leisure club has a lovely 20 metre pool, steam room and saunas as well as gym equipment.
My wife and I certainly intend to return to this idyllic resort - it is ideal for special occasions such as birthdays and anniversaries. The hotel had left petit fours and a card in our room for my birthday - a nice touch.
