,My wife and I have today returned from an 8day holiday [with Shearings Holidays] at the above hotel..... First of all this holiday in no way detracts from Shearing`s ability to provide and excellent 8 day break in any way whatsoever. The Hotel is superbly sited on the Dornoch Firth and any faults indicated below may appear picky but patrons should be aware of them, given good money is spent in the hope that its enjoyed. Faults 1] Staff in the restaurant tried their level best but appeared to be mainly of Eastern European descent and they did do their level best to be extremely helpful and courteous, but appeared to be let down by lack of numbers on most days,,[there was four coaches in each day] and maybe the times given for each meal sitting was not enough[7-45 to 9am for breakfast and 6-45 to 8pm for dinner] as on four out of 7 evening meals there were several tab les still eating after 8pm and this was caused by not being served quickly between first and second courses which resulted in some patrons leaving their tables without having their sweet course.and those that did were still there 15-20 mins after 8pm...2] in our bedroom we had to watch what television we wanted. on a small[14"screen] with a black section both top and bottom of the screen..reducing this to about 8-9 ins.....When this was reported to reception we were given a reply of " we know but cannot do anything about it!!!!" [even cabins on cruises taken have flat screens] in this day and age we think this could be improved upon, but maybe wont concern us as another visit doesn't look good......On the plus side all meals were of a good level and choice/portions as with most other similar standard ones....Days out were first class and Shearings, omn this trip provided our coach with TWO optional excursions albeit a little expensive, but their two drivers--George and Tom where without question the best we have had on a lot of coach holidays with several operators,,,,TOM being to tops-- his commentaries had the coach in tears sometimes with laughter and his poems terrific. he travelled with a great sense of humour. first class difference to everyone who went with him,,, our main Coach driver [John]for the eight days break also showed an attitude of wellbeing to his passengers which was appreciated be all his subjects...other that the faults at the start it was an enjoyable 8 days

Dear dorianhull_

Thank you for taking the time to review your recent stay with. We are disappointed that you were not happy with the service you received and I have passed on your comments to the relevant departments as we strive to correct any issues. The staff work hard to serve as quickly as possible but unfortunately at times, the majority of people enter the restaurant as soon as the restaurant opens and they serve people as fast as possible. When this happens this sometimes does cause a slight delay.

Booked a weeks holiday here with Shearings Self-Drive earlier this month. We have been twice before but the service at the hotel was even better this time. We had a room on the top floor so had a view of the town and the Cathedral and a table near the window in the Dining Room.
Our allotted waiter, Peter, who was Hungarian was excellent. My husband goes mountain climbing and thought he might be too late back one evening to be able to get his Evening Meal so Peter took our order in the morning and offered to have it saved until half an hour after the Restaurant normally closed. The food was delicious, especially the soup which was home made, not like in some of the other Shearings Hotels. Apparently the Chef has been there over 35 years.
I have M.S. and need to rest in the afternoons so the Housekeeping staff made sure they did our room in the mornings.
There are plenty of areas to sit and read your newspapers which you can buy at the Hotel each morning and lunch is avaialable to buy if you require it. Packed lunches can be ordered the evening before if you really need one.
As we had booked early we were given a complimentary bottle of wine, a bowl of fruit and a box of Roses Chocolates which were in our room when we arrived.
Dornoch itself is a lovely village with a few nice small shops and cafes with a small but beautiful Cathedral which we visited. We also attended their Sunday Service which we thoroughly enjoyed too. It is not far to walk from the hotel but it is an uphill walk on the way back.
We really enjoyed our holiday and will definitely go again.

We spent five nights in the Bay Dornoch Hotel, owned by Shearings, on a Shearings coach trip to Scotland in August 2013.
We got to the hotel at 1750 on Monday night and had room 334 on the third floor. The view was magnificent being over the Royal Dornoch Golf Course to the Dornoch Firth.
We went to dinner at 1845 and were given a table in a group we didn’t know so asked to be moved to near our own group but the new table wasn’t much better. It turns out they just put people anywhere and you stay at that table for the duration of your stay. Not to worry, the food was good with dinner being three course and tea or coffee being served outside the dining room afterwards. We didn’t go hungry and breakfast was also quite good. Apart from cereal in the morning all courses were table served. We were well looked after by a young man from Hungary called Ben.
For the first time in our travels we had no shower, just a bath, and a lot of the rooms in the hotel are similar.
We had a family room with a double and a single bed, a decent wardrobe, telephone, clock radio, tea and coffee making facilities and small CRT television. The room was a good size. There was plenty of hot water and the towels were good. The bed was comfortable. The location of the hotel meant it was quiet at night.
The village of Dornoch is well worth a visit with the Cathedral being especially worth a look. There are also a number of cafes to tempt you with good food and delicious cakes.

Room Tip: Get a sea view room

Dear wolfhill

Thank you for your recent review of your stay with us. We are so pleased you enjoyed your stay - we are sorry you didn't get the table exactly where you wanted - many of the tables were already allocated to people so we did get you as close to your party as possible. Ben is really pleased to be mentioned and that you were pleased with the service he gave. We hope to welcome you back to Dornoch in the future

Kind regards

We booked this hotel as part of an 8 day package with Shearings as it offered an itinerary we were interested in. After reading some of the previous reviews we were a bit worried, but we need not have been, this in our opinion is one of Shearings better hotels. We were greeted on arrival by the manager and the distribution of keys was extremely efficient. Our room was a standard one without a sea view, but that is what we had booked. It contained a comfy bed, plenty of storage space, tea making facilities, a hairdryer and an old style TV with the basic channels. Everything was scrupulously clean and well presented, looked like it had been recently decorated. The bathroom contained a shower over the bath which we had requested on booking, this proved to be very efficient. There was also a sturdy hand grip on the wall and a non slip mat provided along with large bath and hand towels
We found the food to be of excellent quality and imaginatively presented. The waiting staff were extremely pleasant and nothing was too much trouble for Bea who served us.
The entertainment was better than some we have encountered, the duo and the piper were particularly good.
Dornoch itself is a very small Scottish town with just basic shops, bank etc. There was wifi available in the Post office and library. There is a lovely walk across the golf course and along the beach to the town.
I know this is a hotel review but must just comment on the care and attention given by our drivers, John and Tom. We learnt a lot from them about the area, groaned at some jokes and laughed at others! The optional excursions are offered on a first come first served basis, but we would highly recommend them. It is possible to reach Inverness on the public service bus but it is not much cheaper than the trip.
Overall we had a fantastic holiday, the good weather helped, but the whole package cost us less than £50 a day each, to include over 1000 miles of travel and an included trip to the Orkneys which was selling locally for £51 each.
If you are looking for a 5 star hotel equipped with every bit of modern technology, you may well be disappointed, but if you are looking for comfort, good value and a committed and caring staff, this is the place to come.

This hotel is quite old and desperately needs refurbishing. The decor in the rooms is very poor and little work that has been previously done has been undertaken by a professional. e.g. towel rails not level, paint splashed on glass, selotaped wallpaper in the lounge etc.
However, the staff are excellent. They are polite and efficient. The manager is aware of the state of the hotel and is in the process of looking at refurbishment. We didn't have a shower but the bath always had plenty of hot water. Only the chef (if they really have one) can say why he serves food that is overcooked, unappetising and never hotter than warm. Perhaps he has a small budget and can only afford frozen food?
The grounds are quite pleasant and there is ample parking. Five minutes walk downhill is the lovely clean village of Dornoch.

Room Tip: If you need a shower, you don't get one in a standard room.

I reviewed this hotel before but trip adviser put the wrong one down they put Dornoch Castle Hotel we didn't go there we went to this one.It was a nice hotel staff were great they worked like troopers always on the go all very polite our room was very basic but very clean and bed was comfy we had a room on the front and a nice view of the beach and the famous Dornoch Golf Course which was right across the road from the Dornoch Hotel .The golf course is used by quite a few famous people.Dornoch has a very tiny village and would advise you to go out on a trip every day but if you like the beach it would be good in the hotter weather the food was good and got plenty .my only gripe was with it being an old building the floor boards squeaked and the coridoor lights shone through the door surrounds other then that we had a very nice stay even the other guests where nice.

Room Tip: you can upgrade to a lot nicer room.

Went through Shearings and the hotel was fine, very comfy beds and we did get a shower over the bath. Food was standard Shearings but a good choice every evening and the waiting staff were very polite and cheerful. Dornoch was OK to visit as we were taken out on trips but it is not somewhere I would want to stay for any length of time, it's in the middle of nowhere. We also had Tom as a relief driver for 2 days and he was brilliant, I just hope his employers realise what a font of knowledge he is and what a great asset to to the company.
