“Excellent Hotel”
Reviewed 29 January 2012

Me and my son stayed in October 2011 while he was involved in the Donald Ross Junior invitational open at Royal Dornoch Golf Club. Very welcoming staff and a comfortable room. Could not be handier for the Royal Dornoch Championship Golf Course as it is literally a few paces from the Hotel door to the 1st tee.

My only criticism would be that I fancied scallops one evening in the Hotel restaurant but after inquiring with the waiter found out that they were serving dredged scallops rather than hand-dived scallops. I have seen first-hand the mess a scallop dredger fishing boat makes of the seabed and would never knowingly eat dredged scallops.

Room Tip: Ask for a Golf course view.

Stayed for a special break for the third time. Two rounds of golf at Castle Stuart (stunning golf course) and one round at Royal Dornoch (must be in the world top ten). pefect blue skies for all three days. Three rounds of golf and two night B&B for less than £300!! Hotel is very friendly and cosy, food is excellent, lovely sitting room with log fire. Scottish hospitality at its best!

Dear Stanley,
You are right, Castle Stuart is a stunning golf course (newly ranked 56th best in the world by Golf Magazine) and likewise Dornoch is ranked 16th best. The weather just goes to prove that it is possible to enjoy fantastically sunny days in the Highlands even in November. The temperatures may not be exactly tropical but with such stunning scenery, glorious golf and highland hospitality why worry !
The good news is that you can still get 3 rounds of golf and 2 nights B & B for less than £300 in 2012 as we are holding our prices next year.Hope to see you here for a fourth time soon.
Kind regards

We visited the hotel as a group of 16 male golfers. We travelled by bus from Leeds arriving at 12:30 am but the staff welcomed us heartily despite the time and kept the bar open for us!! My room was excellent, modern sylish and comfortable and will be further improved this winter I was told-with some new bathrooms-ours was a little tired although fully functional with masses of powerful hot water.
The bar and restaurant were very smart and comfortable, the bar friendly and well stocked. We stayed two nights but sadly only dined once as the food was of a very high standard. I had cullen skink and fillet steak, both of which were outstanding and the quality and value of the wine was very good.
The setting is magnificent overlooking the first tee and fairway of Royal Dornoch with the sea in the distance. Many other great courses are accessable from the hotel-we played Brora which was pretty close.
This hotel is well worth the trip to get there, very comfortable, excellent food and very pleasant staff to a person-very chatty, helpful and friendly. I plan to visit again and would recommend it to anyone.

Room Tip: Rooms facing the sea must have a spectacular view-our did not but I can imagine it!

Dear Paul R from Leeds,

After Scotland, I would say that Yorkshire is my favourite place even though I hail from the opposite side of the pennines!
That was a heck of a bus ride you endured to get to Dornoch so it is pleasing to hear that you were warmly welcomed by the team and offered suitable refreshments from the bar !
Thank you for posting such a comprehensive and complimentary review in which you have covered most aspects of your stay. I agree that Dornoch and The Royal Golf is well worth the trip from anywhere really. This part of Scotland is a wonderful area especially for lovers of golf but also for many other outdoor activities.
I hope we can have the opportunity to welcome you to dornoch again next year. We are certainly running the Highland Stay and Play golf package in April and October/November 2012.
Kind Regards

Location is perfect for walks to the village, beach and golf courses. We loved Dornoch and will certainly be back to stay with you.

My wife and I have just returned recently from a great holiday staying at Royal Hotel in Dornoch which was home from home. This was our third visit to Dornoch and this hotel stood out at the best.

The location is great next to Royal Dornoch GC and our view of the first tee / fairway and beach in the distance from our room was very special. The bed was hugh and very comfortable as was the bath (great for a good soak).

The breakfasts and evening meals were very high quality and the service and staff were very friendly. If you like whiskey the only problem you faced each evening was trying to work out which malt to try out.

The only minor flaw was the limited choice of draft larger, there were no premium options like Peroni or Stella, however, recognising the hotel was closing soon at the end of season I can fully appreciate a pragmatic approach to stock had to be adopted and the bottled range was fine.

Unlike earlier reports we found that the Wifi worked great and the large sofas in the conservatory were great for chilling after a round of golf.

We are looking forward to coming back very soon hopefully.

Dear 'Kettering Timbo',

Thank you for posting your most complimentary review on tripadvisor following your stay here earlier this month.
I am pleased that you enjoyed your visit. We too believe that The Royal Golf is rather special being so close to the world renowned Royal Dornoch Golf Club and the wonderful nearby coastline with its spectacular beaches.

Thank you again and we hope to see you in the near future.

Royal Golf hotel Dornoch....one of the best hotels I have stayed in. From the moment I checked in at reception till the time I left I was made very welcome by all the staff. My wife and I spent three nights there...we had the "Morris " suite which was made up of a very comfortable lounge with fantasctic views over the golf course and to the sea. With a seperate bedroom...and a huge very clean bathroom with a lovely shower cubicle. The breakfast menu was first class and all food was cooked to order.Dinner was very good too.

Room Tip: If you aim to travel and stay in Dornoch..chooose this hotel. Great value indeed.

Dear 'Sidecar Willy,'

Thank you so much for taking the time to post a glowing review on tripadvisor following your stay here in October.
To say The Royal Golf is 'one of the best hotels you have stayed in' is indeed high praise. You did stay in one of the most impressive rooms - The Tom Morris Suite - with its stunning views from the front facing lounge.
Thank you once again and we hope to see you in the future.
