“Well worth a look.”
Reviewed 27 March 2012

A romantic two night luxury break arranged by my other half. Champagne on arrival in our room. The Old Court Room said to be the finest in the Castle, amazing open fireplace. Wonderful four poster bed. Extremely cosy room, very tidy. Two small criticisms ; scatter cushions on bed were a bit fousty smelling, and very small separate toilet. Not exactly deal breakers.
The service in the Restaurant was excellent, particularly by the owners son, who was our very knowledgeable waiter. Food... Very very good; menu seasonal and cooked to our liking. Thoroughly enjoyable.

Thank you ScotlandMilly for your lovely comments.

We are delighted that you had such a lovely time and loved the Old Courtroom, it is very special and the toilet while small is built into the turret of the original castle and therefore very difficult to make any bigger, we think this adds character.

Our chefs work extremely hard to source local ingredients where possible and this shows in the taste of the dishes served.

We do hope that you are able to visit us again in the future.

Warmest wishes from all the team at the Castle

This was our first visit to Dornoch Castle Hotel, we had purchased a Groupon voucher and did not know what to expect. We had a great time, from the food at dinner, which was super and a fantastic choice for breakfast. We stayed in a wing room, so lacked a little of the "old castle" but loved the owl on the window, my partners face the first morning he opened the curtains was a picture!!! The room was a little dated, but ample hot water for a shower and tea/ coffee there if needed, we made the most of the outstanding weather and had our coffee in the garden. We will return but will try for a castle room next time!!!

Thank you remmieEdinburgh for your lovely comments.

We are delighted that you had such a lovely stay with us and enjoyed our fantastic food and our "friendly" owl.

We hope that you will be able to visit us again the future, as we have said it is always lovely to see repeat customers coming back year after year, along with encouraging new people to visit us too.

Warmest wishes from all the team at the Castle

Over the past twelve years I have lost count of the number of times I have stayed there. Last week was my first visit for 2012. Nothing lifts my spirits like a few days in magnificent Dornoch and staying at the Dornoch Castle Hotel. I have absolutely nothing to compalin about! Even the bus stops a few yards from the front entrance.

Room Tip: There are no elevators which means if you cannot climb stairs then you must ask for a downstairs/gar...

A return visit to Dornoch Castle Hotel for me and first time for my partner. Excellent service, Gluten free diet was catered for without fuss, food is fantastic. Good wine list and even better whisky selection, and these boys know their stuff when it comes to wine and whisky, name your favourite and they will run you through a list of options to try. Castle rooms are cosy and well equipped, filter coffee in the room. garden rooms are more utilitarian but great for accessibility.

To the family and staff of Dornoch Castle......top class....you rock !!

Mum and baby bump would like to thank you for an amazing few days. We loved it from start to finish and the batteries are fully recharged.

Kind, knowledgeable and attentive staff, good food, comfort and warmth from the moment you walk through the door... we didn't want to leave.

We'll be back next year as a party of 3 :-)

Stayed in Feb 2011 for my husbands birthday in the cathederal room. It was icy and snowy outside but cosy inside. The room was hot with lashings of hot water and a big comfortable bed.
Evening meal and breakfast was good. Plentiful. But while we were there we heard about the tower room with the open fire and were determined to go back and try it. so we did !! We went at twixtmas, and it was even better. Up in the tower, quaint, wood panelling, old fashioned and with a huge fireplace and roaring fire. Felt like a king. Well worth the very long drive, the problem is you dont want to leave !!

Room Tip: Choose the tower room with the roaring log fire !

From the moment my wife and I checked in to this superb hotel, greeted by friendly reception staff, to the moment we checked out 2 days later, every wish of ours was fulfilled in full with not even a beat missed-- not that we wanted the world, but I am sure if we had then it would have been produced. Superb food and wine, amazing whisky choice [and knowledge from all about them] beautifull bedrooms and public areas, scrupulously clean and welcoming throughout, the only low point was leaving!! Never mind , we can always go back and I am sure we will. Kimberley and Alastair Waite.

Room Tip: old castle rooms have most wow factor--sloping floors etc

The Castle is located in the historic town of Dornoch across from the stunning 13th century Cathedral, boasting stunning views of the town. The central position of the hotel makes it ideal for exploring Dornoch, home to the world famous Royal Dornoch Golf Course, which overlooks the breath taking golden sand beach. Dornoch is also well situated for those looking to explore more of what the Highlands have to offer. The historic Castle is built on the site of the original Bishop’s Palace of St Gilbert, who founded the Cathedral in the early 13th century. The building eventually sold on and in 1947 became a hotel after some extensive work, which maintain much of the character of the Castle as a stately, historic and comfortable home. The Castle boasts a total of 22 en-suite bedrooms situated both within the original castle and the modern garden extension. There is a variety of room types available including; standard, superior, deluxe and our award winning Old Courtroom. Due to the castle’s layout each bedroom has its own special ambiance, great care has been taking in creating a distinctive character in each bedroom. The Castle's restaurant has retained an AA rosette standard, through the exceptional work from the chefs. The malt whisky selection is second to none and can be enjoyed in the cosy stone-lined whisky bar with the roaring fire to protect you from the Scottish winds, in the summer the walled garden is the perfect setting to relax during the long summer nights. Coming Summer 2016: The Dornoch Distillery will be opening soon on the grounds of the Dornoch Castle Hotel producing 'Old Style' Whisky and Hand Crafted Organic Gin from scratch. ... more   less
