What helpful people all the staff were. The room was neat and tidy with a good view. The restaurant served a beautiful meal of venison and the wine list was fine also. The garden outback was most pleasant in the sunshine and the range of single malts was outstanding. Plenty of things to do in Dornoch also

We stay here over Valentines weekend and it was absolutely perfect! Fantastic room rate which included dinner.
We had a drink in the bar before dinner - brilliant ambiance and then into the restaurant where we had a dinner which was beyond all expectation!
Very comfortable night's sleep.
Breakfast was a bit of a disappointment (after such an excellent dinner) but was perfectly adequate.
Would definitely recommend.

We booked for lunch, but there was no need (the place was dead) Having visited before we were looking forward to great food & lively atmosphere.......The Chicken Ceaser was without bacon or dressing ! The Goat's cheese salad with beetroot SORBET.....was odd and the Burger was nothing special. This food was not prepared by a Chef. There was a total of 2 desserts on offer, both requiring minimal effort from kitchen staff. The Gaelic coffee was luke warm with barely a hint of whisky and overpriced. Over all a sad day for what used to be a great dining experience. Let's hope it sells and the new owners get it back on track. We will not be returning.

This place gives you the real deal. It's an obvious castle in the Scottish baronial style, in the Highlands. Americans in particular will love it. The location is good, right opposite Dornoch Cathedral and next to the Tourist Information Centre, within walking distance of the village centre, shops, etc. The main entrance takes you into the bar; there is no separate reception area. The bar is suitably old with wooden beams, huge open fireplace, comfy sofas and little tables. It boasts over 300 whiskies (though many were quite expensive) as well as a good selection of beers and ales. I was even offered a choice of gins, some of which were totally new to me (and I know quire a few!). The staff were all superb. They were knowledgable, wel trained, friendly and efficient. Quite honestly the best service I have experienced in the UK. The room was nice, but a bit cramped. It overlooked the garden, which was pleasant, and of course, quiet. Bath robes were supplied: a nice touch. But the big let down was the bathroom. It was badly needing refurbished. Bath and shower were ok, but a hotel of this standard should have shower screens not a curtain, and the towels while clean and white were not big and fluffy as you would expect. The worse thing was the wash basin which was badly cracked. It did not look like tht had happened that day, or even that week. I think a hotel of that standard should not use a room with a cracked wash basin. We were only staying one night, and had got a good deal on the price, so didn't complain, but I would be interested to hear if any other guests re given room 18, whether or not the washbasin has been replaced.

Room Tip: Avoid room 18 unless you want a cracked washbasin!

We all really enjoyed our lunch at Dornoch Castle. There was a good choice of meals and an even bigger choice of whiskies! The food was delicious and the staff very helpful and friendly. We didn't have to wait long for the food and we were not disappointed when it arrived. Would recommend a visit if you are in the area.

This is my 1st review but felt it was worth joining to spread the word. Stop in by the castle hotel often on our way to Orkney to see family. The new lunch menu is fab, the platters are highly recommended. Always a great ale on which keeps hubby happy, the best feature of the castle has to be the staff, Marie is always happy to help and always happy to see us which gives it the home from home feeling. Very kind when dealing with my elderly aunt, patience is always required. A warm atmosphere is always a find. Must stop overnight at some point in the future the reception are always kind on giving tariffs. The place to go for friendly atmosphere. Hope to see you all again soon. Don't go anywhere in a hurry Marie you always make our lunch and coffee a good one.

We got married in beautiful Dornoch in May and chose to stay and celebrate in the Castle Hotel. We cannot thank Ros, Colin and the whole team at the hotel enough for making our wedding celebrations so special. From the wonderful rooms and excellent food through to the warm and friendly service, we could not have asked for more. We had such a fantastic time. Thank you and we hope to see you again soon!

The Castle is located in the historic town of Dornoch across from the stunning 13th century Cathedral, boasting stunning views of the town. The central position of the hotel makes it ideal for exploring Dornoch, home to the world famous Royal Dornoch Golf Course, which overlooks the breath taking golden sand beach. Dornoch is also well situated for those looking to explore more of what the Highlands have to offer. The historic Castle is built on the site of the original Bishop’s Palace of St Gilbert, who founded the Cathedral in the early 13th century. The building eventually sold on and in 1947 became a hotel after some extensive work, which maintain much of the character of the Castle as a stately, historic and comfortable home. The Castle boasts a total of 22 en-suite bedrooms situated both within the original castle and the modern garden extension. There is a variety of room types available including; standard, superior, deluxe and our award winning Old Courtroom. Due to the castle’s layout each bedroom has its own special ambiance, great care has been taking in creating a distinctive character in each bedroom. The Castle's restaurant has retained an AA rosette standard, through the exceptional work from the chefs. The malt whisky selection is second to none and can be enjoyed in the cosy stone-lined whisky bar with the roaring fire to protect you from the Scottish winds, in the summer the walled garden is the perfect setting to relax during the long summer nights. Coming Summer 2016: The Dornoch Distillery will be opening soon on the grounds of the Dornoch Castle Hotel producing 'Old Style' Whisky and Hand Crafted Organic Gin from scratch. ... more   less
