“Just alright place to stay”
3 of 5 bubbles Reviewed 30 July 2014

My family and I recently spent two nights at the castle hotel in dornoch, scotland. I found the hotel online. I was intrigued by the concept of a renovated castle. I required a family room because there are three in my family. From the outside it looks like the website. The staff were very friendly. Our room was not in the main castle part so I can't speak to those rooms. Our was at the very back of the hotel, up the stairs from the garbage dump and new heating system which spewed smoke into our hall outside our room. Parking was right behind our room down the stairs. Openly three spaces though. Otherwise street parking. We had breakfast there for two days which was very good. Our bathroom was small and the toilet continually ran. Our room was just ok in size for three people. Free wifi is advertised but you have to be in the bar to get it and it barely worked there. A plus was that this hotel is very near to the Royal Dornoch golf club which has a wonderful golf course. Also eat in the golf course restaurant. It has great food and wonderful service!!!!

one of the main reasons for our trip was to play golf at Royal Dornoch so finding a castle to stay in was an added bonus. We arrived on a beautiful warm sunny day, Dornoch is a quaint little village with few streets and even fewer shops.

Check in at the hotel was the worst part of the experience, there is no real reception area just someone hidden behind a door in the bar area, which is quite disconcerting when you're trying to have a quiet drink and 6-8 bike tourists wander in from their wet ride and try and found out where to check in. we certainly weren't the only ones who couldn't find reception or had to move from their seats while people check in. There's has to be a better way even in a small space.

The castle rooms themselves were very nice, as per usual we were on the top floor, never realised there were so many stairs in places in the U.K.. The bed was very comfortable and we had a great morning view out to the sea.

We only had dinner one night choosing to go the Royal Links Hotel the other night, the food was just ok, the dining room is in room with lots of windows and light but zero air flow so it became hot and stuffy as the sun was out and the windows and doors were all closed. The breakfast was ok but nothing special.

we spent time sitting in the bar or out in the garden sampling the local beers, not being scotch drinkers we didn't partake but had fun looking at all the various kinds available in the bar.

If you're a golfer it's a 10 min walk to one of the best golf courses in the world, played on a crystal clear windless early morning you couldn't want for much more, now off to Loch Lomond

Room Tip: If you want to stay in a Castle room make sure you specify that when you book, we saw people complai...

Went twice in 10 days and both times were equally excellent locally sourced produce cooked to perfection topped of with a rare selection of malts not easy to find. It's the place to start and finish your holiday. The staff are friendly efficient and attentive. This is a gem that any foodie should visit.

The hotel itself is very quaint, you have to duck to go through the original stone passageway into the dining room - but it is a castle, after all. Having to roll our suitcases through the dining area to get to our ground floor room was a bit odd, but do-able. Internet was spotty in the bar, but if you jiggled around enough you'd find a spot where it worked. Food was good and plentiful. Close to a lot of pubs as well, and some nice areas for a stroll after supper. Check out the rose gardens at area shops! Beauly priory ruins just across the street.

Room Tip: There's no lift, so if you have mobility issues, ask for ground floor.

Dornoch. The Castle hotel is ok, but maybe a bit overrated, especially the restaurant. £51 for Cullen skink/chicken liver pâté, steak/chicken, was steep. Had to wait 20 minutes for cup of coffee. Room overlooked garden and roof of restaurant - nothing special. Breakfast OK.

Room Tip: Main part of hotel is probably better than side (where we were)

Visited this hotel for a valentines offer with my husband in the offer was a 5 course meal this was stunning, there was a set menu but still lots of choice.
Room- we were offered an upgrade of our room when we arrived the room had a 4 poster bed, jacuzzi bath and a wood burner, room was huge and beautiful.
Breakfast in the morning again was really goid cant fault this hotel, lovely open fire in the main bar which was very relaxing. Would highly recommend this hotel.

I've stayed here previously and thought of it as a good pub / restaurant with rooms. Prices seemed to have escalated but standards haven't. If my room looked anything like the one on the Tripadvisor site I may not have been disappointed! I didn't think it was great for the price. Spacious but very dated.

Dinner was enjoyable but again not great value. I thought the wine list was very expensive - £45 for a Fleurie, £59 for a Rully. Wow.

Loved the bar. Great range of whisky and real ale on tap.

Staff were friendly and helpful.

Still a great pub with rooms, but I don't think the total offering matches the prices charged.

The central position of the hotel makes it ideal for exploring Dornoch, home to the world famous Royal Dornoch Golf Course, which overlooks the breath taking golden sand beach. Dornoch is also well situated for those looking to explore more of what the Highlands have to offer. The historic Castle is built on the site of the original Bishop’s Palace of St Gilbert, who founded the Cathedral in the early 13th century. The building eventually sold on and in 1947 became a hotel after some extensive work, which maintain much of the character of the Castle as a stately, historic and comfortable home. The Castle boasts a total of 22 en-suite bedrooms situated both within the original castle and the modern garden extension. There is a variety of room types available including; standard, superior, deluxe and our award winning Old Courtroom. Due to the castle’s layout each bedroom has its own special ambiance, great care has been taking in creating a distinctive character in each bedroom. The Castle's restaurant has retained an AA rosette standard, through the exceptional work from the chefs. The malt whisky selection is second to none and can be enjoyed in the cosy stone-lined whisky bar with the roaring fire to protect you from the Scottish winds, in the summer the walled garden is the perfect setting to relax during the long summer nights. Coming Summer 2016: The Dornoch Distillery will be opening soon on the grounds of the Dornoch Castle Hotel producing 'Old Style' Whisky and Hand Crafted Organic Gin from scratch. ... more   less
