“Turquoise waters and golden sands...”
Reviewed 8 June 2012

This beach is an absolute delight. Continue on the small road past Balnakeil Craft Village and as you descend the hill a grand but mysterious house comes into view, standing proud over the beach below. You will also pass an old water mill and cemetery with the ruins of an old church. Curiously every headstone is either of a Mackay or a Campbell - a reminder of the clan families that still proliferate in the area today.

The beach itself is actually two beaches, largely protected from the prevailing westerly swell by the Cape Wrath headland - used in live bombing exercises by allied forces! So I imagine this bay might be ideal for windsurfing or kite-surfing which so far seems undiscovered. It's remoteness is the key to it's appeal. With golden sands and turqoise waters if it wasnt for the temperature you could imagine you were on a tropical island somewhere!

You can walk the entire length of the beach and then follow a track up through the dunes to an MOD training facility which looks rather like an aircraft control tower. Then follow the cliff-line to the east past the cairn and begin the journey back along the crest of the dunes to the main beach. The walk takes about 2 - 3 hours and offers some great photo opportunities.

“Gorgeous and peaceful”
Reviewed 4 June 2012

We had a great time walking on the beach. There was no one there, and the beach has this strange layout, which means that you could explore different parts of it every time you came. It also offers views on Cape Wrath.
