Owner description: This is a 5 star visitor attraction and retail complex. Loch Ness is already the most famous lake in the world but our aim is to make it better understood. This is achieved through a fully audio visually guided 35 minute tour. The presentation is theatrical in style and integrates the real tools and archive footage from four decades of research. As part of our educational remit, under 6s go free. The facts are objectively explained and whilst keeping the mystery centre stage, we place it in the context of the loch's very unusual properties. Thus we are endorsed by Scottish Natural Heritage as "A portal to the unique natural phenomenon that is Loch Ness". We offer a huge range of retail onsite and boat cruises on Loch Ness in the summer months. There is also a large cafe and restaurant attached to the site.

“Very Well Explained”
Reviewed 11 November 2013

We had a very friendly welcome at the ticket desk, everything was explained clearly to us. There is a wealth of information thrown at you throughout the exhibition, but it is explained very clearly and in an interesting way.
The rooms are dark but there were children in with us and none of them seemed to be bothered (more interested in Nessie). It is worth a trip if you are in the area as this is where the legend began.

Thank you for your lovely review. I am glad you appreciated the welcome at the ticket desk and that you thoroughly enjoyed the exhibition and all the information you gained. Its great to hear that the children in your group also enjoyed themselves. Everyone loves to see the actual equipment used in the Loch such as the Worlds smallest submarine and the scale models of the things we've found such as The Wellington Bomber are very popular. Young and old alike all love the interactive walk on water floor and the special effects. I appreciate the time you've taken to come and leave a review, many thanks

“Really good visit. A little more light please.”
Reviewed 10 November 2013 via mobile

Visited this month, 1st time for me, second for the rest of the party.

I found it really interesting and informative. They also enjoyed it second time around.

The only comment would be about light. One of our party had poor sight and because of the darkness between the rooms found it difficult to move around from room to room.

I appreciate it was all on the level and doors were wide, but a little more light wouldn't go amiss.

Thank you for your review, I am glad you enjoyed your visit and that other members of your group enjoyed it second time around. We have added a lot of new features over the past two years such as the interactive water floor and a huge new area dedicated to the things that have been found in the Loch by the Loch Ness Project (based here in the laboratories upstairs)

I am grateful for the feedback about the lighting. We do try very hard to achieve a balance between having enough light to move around and it been dark enough for you to see the screens and special effects. After each five minute segment the lights come on fully in the areas between each room so that you can pass safely between them. Thank you for your comments.

“Great, but left me wanting more!”
Reviewed 4 November 2013

I'm a big admirer of Adrian Shine (bar his involvement in that car advert!) and the work he has done at Loch Ness. He brings a healthy dose of scepticism and reason to the debate about the mystery of the Loch which appeals to the intelligent tourist with a soft heart.

His stamp is all over the Loch Ness centre and it is all the better for it. The exhibition takes you through the history of the Loch both mythologically and scientifically, from Columba to Chernobyl so to speak. With lots of real-life artefacts, information boards that don't patronise and interesting film segments, this is an experience for adults and grown up children who wouldn't mind there being a monster in the Loch, but also wouldn't be disappointed in learning about the other interesting aspects of this incredible body of water should Nessie turn out to be a mixture of sturgeon and psychology.

The only complaint I'd have is that the exhibition could be bigger and longer. I'd like to see some of the fantastic photograph debunking that has been done by the likes of Tony Harmsworth et al, as many people still view these as compelling evidence of a beast. I can also see the point being made by some of those that have said it is a bit strange to essentially spend an entire exhibition debunking the existence of a monster, to then have a huge shop dedicated to monster paraphernalia. Still, people have to make a living. :)

Thank you for your great review! We are very lucky to have had Adrian Shine design our exhibition and are grateful for the knowledge he brings and the on-going work that he does at the centre. We wish the exhibition could be bigger and longer as well! This year we changed a large retail area into a new exhibition area (without increasing the entrance fee) and we've had a great response. We are always planning new things and Adrian and the rest of the design team have more exciting things underway for both this winter and a few years to come!

“Disappointing”
Reviewed 31 October 2013 via mobile

Not what I expected and a bit boring. It was £6.95 entry, i would describe it like watching a documentary in numerous rooms whilst stood up. Some nice touches with some effects but not amazing. My 6 year old was excited about going here but commented his was bored throughout. Shame really.

Thank you for your review. I'm glad you liked our special effects such as the walk on water floor, the under water room, the laser show and the "cave" room. I'm sorry that you found other things to be not as you expected and would be grateful to know what you did expect, if you would email me debbie@lochness.com I would be interested to receive more feedback. As well as the films in the first six rooms we also have all of the original equipment used to look for the monster and all the other things we've found in the Loch. We've have the worlds smallest submarine and the actual boat used in the recovery of the Wellington bomber, the Rosetta project equipment and much more. Our new area shows scale models of all the things we've found and enables the visitor to listen and watch eye witness statements. We are continually updating and improving our centre and so your feedback would be appreciated.
