“Very friendly and excellent breakfast”
Reviewed 3 August 2009

I would recommend this B&B to anyone wishing to stay in the Fort Augustus area. We received a very friendly welcome from Anne. The room was spotless, comfortable and the shower was great. Our breakfast was excellent with good choices available.
We will be back.

Carn A Chuilinn B/B. Recently we stay at this B/B for 2 nights 23/24th Junat the start of our holidays in Scotland. We were delighted that we picked here to stay. Our room was spotless and
very comfortable and no complaints about the food. When we arrived after a long drive we were offered tea & biscuits and it was nice to relax and chat to the owner.
We were delighted not to have seen the review of the other family. We don't know what
they were complaining about.
Would we recommend this Guest House to others? Yes. Will we be back Yes hopefully.
It was a great start to our holiday in Scotland. Worthy of 4 Stars.

Although located on the outskirts of Fort Augustus, this B&B is worth the inconvenience of a lengthy walk into town. The hostess is charming, the rooms (esp. the shower!) were fantastic and comfortable and the breakfast delicious. Would return anytime!

My partner and I were on a cycling trip and loved our stay at Carn a Chuilinn.
Ann the owner was extremely friendly, the place was spotlessly clean and the bedroom we had was huge with lovely views over the hills. The shower was the most powerful one I have ever encountered - lovely for tired muscles after a day of cycling.
The bed and breakfast was just on the outskirts of Fort Augustus, a good 10 minute walk to the centre where there are few good restaurants. Ask Ann for recommendations.
All in all we had a great stay and if we are ever back in Fort Augustus we will stay there again.
Ps and I don’t know what the other family were complaining about, there was plenty for breakfast.

Carn a Chuillin

We have recently returned from a week’s stay at Carn a Chuillin guest house in Fort Augustus. This was our fifth visit in as many years and we stayed for our usual week. We were warmly welcomed as always and the hospitality was as good as ever.
The house is one of the best B&B’s we have ever stayed in – the rooms are spotlessly clean and comfortable, with an excellent range of facilities. The breakfast every day was excellent. On our last morning, we requested a very early breakfast – 6.45am, so that we could leave to catch our flight from Glasgow and this was provided exactly as requested and on time with a cheerful attitude and the impression that this was not creating a problem.
The guest lounge was comfortable and available at all times.
Being only a short drive from the centre of Fort Augustus, we found the B&B was ideally suited for access to the pubs and restaurants.
We are already planning our 2009 visit!

  • Liked — Warm, friendly, reception. Spotlessly clean and very useful base for travelling around.
  • Disliked — Nothing - everything was as we wanted!

My elderly mother and father , myself and my partner booked 3 nights here as it was 4* and sounded a very friendly place to stay.
Check in time was 4.00 p.m. and we arrived after a very long journey at 3.50 p.m. only to find nobody at home! We drove around for a while and came back to be greeted by the landlady's mother. Apparently the landlady was in Inverness shopping and did not arrive back until about 5.45 or even later. Not a nice welcome. At no point where we told the guest lounge was for our use and consequently we thought we were just being 'allowed' to use it as we had just arrived. Whilst we were watching tv in what we now know IS the guest lounge, the landlady's son came home from work and started changing the channels over in his room with the master remote control,i.e changing our channel.. When my partner asked the Landlady what was happening, she said she hadn't really meant to have sky in the lounge and that we had tv's in our rooms. This made us feel very unwelcome and uncomfortable and we retreated to our rooms. However, the small portable tv's in the rooms had terrible reception, and only channel 4 had a watchable picture. The 4 or 5 channels we received were all out of sequence too. When we were watching a programme one night, the channels were changed over again (presumably by someone with the central control) . At no stage were we reminded that the guestroom was for our use. It was a case of "get to your room". This was hardly private as the landlady used the landing near our bedroom as her office. It was very cold the day we arrived but there was no heating on whatsoever. My mum and dad, who are in their 80's, were sat in their room each with 2 coats on trying to keep warm. My partner had to go find the Landlady to ask to put the heating on and she remarked that she wasn;t cold and offered a hot water bottle to my parents. They declined. The heating was then put on. The toilet seat in my parents room was broken and apparently there was a piece of porcelein missing out of the toilet itself. There were only 6 small packs of milk in our rooms for drinks which doesn't go far when 2 people have coffee all evening. When we asked for more, she asked how many had been put out and we felt as if they were on ration. Breakfast was on the same lines as there was only just over 1 portion of grapefruit in a dish between 6 people. The lady on the other table got hers and I had about half a portion that was left. The same happened the next day and it was after we had finished our cooked breakfast that she asked if we wanted any more grapefruit. My father didn't want a cooked breakfast on the last morning as he had a bit of an upset stomach so asked for egg on toast. I was astounded when he was served up 1 round of toast with 1 egg on it! Obviously he should have said eggs plural. In other guest houses we have stayed in, there has always been plenty of everything without having to be put in the embarrassing position of keep having to ask for more because not enough has been put out in the first place. On the last morning, my partner went and paid and told her we were leaving in 10 minutes. She said she would come and see us before we went but was nowhere to be seen when we left. A friendly, welcoming break? I think not and would not recommend it to anyone and definitely would not want to return. I must admit it was spotlessly clean but the hospitality leaves a lot to be desired and I do not believe it warrants a 4 star rating. The previous guest house we had stayed at was also a 4 star and there was no comparison whatsoever. So much so that it is hard to understand how the ratings are worked out. The other 4 star guest house was of a much higher standard. The Carn a Chuillin is more a "one night passing through" Guest House and in my opinion not appropriate for a longer stay. If we had not booked for 3 nights, we would not have stayed longer than one night.

This three-room B&B is on the edge of town which was quiet, but necessitated our using the car to go into town for dinner.

Our room was spacious, with a king-sized bed. Nice large shower. Anne, the owner, was helpful & friendly, suggesting a number of restaurants we might enjoy.

Breakfast was served earlier than at many of the other B&Bs/guest houses we stayed in during our two-week Scotland driving tour. This was wonderful for us, as we wanted to get an early start.

Breakfast was Scottish full breakfast as well as fresh fruit, juices & cereals.

We enjoyed watching three boats go through the locks in Fort Augustus & sitting at the end of Loch Ness. Due to a sudden shower, we ate at The Moorings, on the road to the end of the lake. It's similar to a Denny's & not as good as the pub food we'd eaten elsewhere.

  • Liked — large room with a king bed
  • Disliked — had to drive to town to visit the locks & eat dinner
